I'd like a good reason to rival Varric for a change (not necessarily full rival, but have more difficulties). He's very easy to build rapport with in DA2.. which is cool.. but I don't want another "bro" thing going on. It's already been done.

I agree that there should be the option to have a more difficult relationship with Varric. I'm just guessing here, but I think there will probably be plenty of opportunities for Varric to disagree with the Inquisitor's methods. Since  Varric doesn't seem like the kind of guy who believes that the "ends justifiy the means", and he seems unwilling to make sacrifices for the "greater good", I think (or hope) that those views could create conflict between him and the Inquisitor.

That's why I want him as an LI soooo bad. I loved him as my best bro in DA2 but I don't  just want a repeat of that.

I mean there are worse things in this world than bro-ing it up on the bro-train with Varric but I want to see a different side of him.

Yeah, I liked Varric the bro, but I think he was predisposed to like your Hawke because it made more sense from a storytelling perspective. Hopefully we'll have the chance to be liked or hated by him based on our actions this time around. I still think he'll be easier to be friends with than most, because he's naturally a friendly guy, but I don't think it will be as easy as in DAII.

So, how do you guys think keeping the lyrium idol will effect him? Or leaving his brother alive? I'm personally doing a few different variations (brother lives/idol kept, brother dies/idol kept, brother lives/idol taken, and brother dies/idol taken) so that I can see the in-game differences, if there are any. They could have his brother die in the institution between games or the idol confiscated by the Templars or someone, but I don't think they will. I think that it will cause changes to his personality like Morrigan being befriended in DAO changes her personality.

I agree. I feel like the devs wouldn't bring Varric back as a companion in DA:I if they didn't have more to explore with his character, and making Varric a LI would bring a whole new dimension to him that we didn't see in DA2.

I wonder about this as well.  I personally never let Varric keep the lyrium idol in DA2, but it would really hurt to see him go mad from it in DA:I.

I heard opinion that idol was processed into rune by Sandal and it's no threat anymore. I don't think it will have much impact in a story.

Not everybody had it turned into a rune, though.

One thing that gives me hope is the fact that every time an initially unromanceable character is brought back in a sequel they've been romanceable:

ME1 -> ME2 (Garrus, Tali)

DA: Awakening -> DA2 (Anders)

The one exception is EDI.

EDI wasn't a companion in ME2, so she doesn't count.

That's not what's important though! What is important is that Anders, Garrus and Tali were companions and brought back as LI's.

Therefore following that formula Varric must be an LI.

You see Anders to the second power times the velocity of Garrus divided by the square root of Tali equals=Varric Romance.

Do the math.

At any rate, this gives me a bit more hope that our favorite dwarf will be upgraded to LI status in DA:I :)

I'm so wary of getting excited. I anticipated this for him for DAII and anticipated being able to romance Joker in ME3 ... that neither happened just has me skeptical - however the arguments that he would follow the pattern of past companions has me (dare I say it) hopeful.

More than the others, I would appreciate romancing Varric.

I was going to say "enjoy" rather than "appreciate" ... but I realize that I cannot make that judgement yet. (; I'm sure I'll have fun exploring the romance and other aspects of the game regardless.

I agree completely. It's been a juggling act between feeling hopeful and doubtful for me. "Cautiously optimistic" is where I would say I am at right now.

I really hope not. Reason being - Bianca.

There's still one of hell of a story to be told. And I hope we get to hear it and see it resolved in DA:I.

There's more than one way to resolve a plotline.
Whether Bianca is living or deceased, it can be resolved and it doesn't have to be resolved the same way for every playthrough. A very poor comparison could be Leliana and Marjolaine in DAO.

He can't have a future with Bianca if she's dead.

And if she's still alive during DAI...well who knows she might just meet with a little "accident".

Just like in that file where Alistair dumped my Warden to be King. He had a little "accident" involving the arch demon. Very tragic.

We don't know that she's dead.

And honestly, the way he talks about her in DA : II it sounds like there is something big to be told. The idea of the Inquisitor shacking up with him while this Bianca thing is still a mystery seems.... dirty? I don't know.

And if she is dead, I think it would be romantic if Varric refuses to "be" with another woman as Bianca will always be his one true girl.  :wub:

Yeah, I don't know. I just lost myself for a moment. For all I know she could be a nasty little ******. But I always pictured her being Varric's long lost soul mate who may still exist.

I swear if there's a way to kill her in the game I will. If I can't romance Varric no one can.
