Lol, that's awesome! ![]()
Why is there so little Varric love going on lately? Where has everyone gone? I just surfaced from this last month of exams and finals for the semester, and POOF! No more Varric discussion. Luckily, Amazing Aimo can always be counted on for some dwarfy goodness, so I'm coming out of forum lurk mode to humbly repost her latest bit of awesomeness

AHAHAHAHAHAH!!!
That was great!!! and I can totally see it happen with my dwarfette Inquisitor!!!

I think the reason this thread isn't too active is we already all know and love Varric, there's not much to discuss ![]()
Yeah- I heart aimo- she's so funny, and I, too, can see this happening to my roguish dwarf-quisitor. Ahhhh, hurry up and get here October!
So, I've had my finger off the pulse for a while in order to concentrate on schoolwork, what's the current feeling? Do we currently think that Varric will be an LI? Or have those hopes been recently quashed by a dev somewhere?
I'm feeling pretty pessimistic toward Varric being an LI. I hope that he is, and will be pleasantly surprised if he is, but I don't think so. We'll see how I feel tomorrow, though. Some days I feel more optimistic and just assume Mr. Lee was being kind of trollish.

Oh no- what did he say?
Varric needs to be a love interest he is the only good looking dwarf ever.

Given the fact out they did with Joker, I'm honestly just waiting for the axe to fall at this point. I adore Varric and want him as a romance option as well, but as the saying goes, once bitten...

same here. The transformation of EDI in a sexbot only to make Joker a creepy(er) nerd with a strange fetish was quite delusional. (and let's not talk about how wrong it feels with the immaturity EDI have with concepts like emotions and affection, because the risk is going into a very dangerous territory.)
But it was totally delusional the entire handle of ethero femShepard's relationships in ME3. Luckily there is Garrus, or ME3 would have been a total flop for me. (by the way, the devs haven't sayd anything about why FemShep was so badly treated if didn't like girls? not speaking only from a "quantity of LI options", but how badly was treated? like Jacob, Thane, the refuse of Joker, Vega's almost rape and the creepy scene of Javik in the DLC?it was an insult after another.)
still, I really hope in Varric as LI. All the benfists of the new engine should be put at good use!
Cullen have zero appeal to me. I find the character quite bland, honestly, and way too similar to Alistar mixed with Fenris/Anders depression. ![]()
I'm starting to think Varric won't be a LI. I hope they give us a dwarf LI in the next game (maybe even a female dwarf companion?) but I'm not holding out much hope for this one.

well, there is always Garrus as an example...who would have thinked Bioware would have given us a Turian as Li? ad yet he is the knight in broken armor that give a little color and chance to FemShep. ![]()
Well, I suppose we always have fanfic for our Varric wish-fulfillment, but I'm really hoping for an official Varric-mance in this game. I will be disappointed if don't get to romance Varric, but will be content to get my fulfillment through the previously mentioned fanfic and, of course, Aimo's fabulous comics. Given some comments made by Alan Schumacher recently in the Romance thread (I usually avoid it, but I usually find Alan's comments pretty insightful and amusing, so I clicked over to see what the discussion has been about. It's pretty good, for anyone interested.) I feel like I need to say the following:
While I found it fun and funny to speculate on and hope for a romance with the sexy, blonde, roguish dwarf before DAII came out, I never felt like Bioware was racist, or mean, or whatever people thought for not including him as a romance. I liked getting to know him, and now that I do, I hope for a Varric mance not simply because he's cute, but because I adored Varric's charm, his slightly tarnished heart of gold, his wit, his humor, and, above all, his loyalty. I really, really hope we learn a little more about Varric's past, since most of what we know is related to his brother and his contacts within the Merchant's Guild. I can't tell you how those three or four panels in the Until We Sleep comic thrilled me- to find out that Bianca was really real!!! and that Varric still pines for her in a real and visceral way. I hope we find out more about Varric's past as it relates to his feelings, without the charming smokescreen of humor, and in the kind of intimate way that is usually reserved for lovers.
Additionally-
I feel for the guys and gals that really wanted a Joker romance in ME3, I think Thane's relationship arc was bafflingly underwhelming (I mean, come on! He was a MAJOR character, but we got one, tin-can line about their romance, and then a few scenes in the DLC cut where it felt like the writers essentially went "Whoops! Forgot about the romance plot for this guy!"), and I felt that EDI's portrayal (indeed, the portrayal and changes of many of the previously established female characters) was pretty absurd. I feel like the game would have been equally compelling for the gaming audience without giving Ashley a ridiculous set of enhanced tatas and the sudden penchant for eye makeup and flowing locks that never would've passed regs in my military days, reducing the mass of FemShep's arms and body to the point that she looked more like a runway model in her black dress than the BAMF we know her to be ***see the disclaimer before you blast me, I don't hate runway models, I actually rather admire them***, and turning EDI into a large bosomed, camel-toe sporting, metal male fantasy. However, it didn't bother me terribly that Joker wasn't offered as a romance given his health issues, his obvious discomfort with intimacy of almost any kind, and his expressed skepticism about the feasibility of a successful romance between fellow marines. Like I said above, that's what fanfic is for. I know its biased, and similar things could said about Varric- he's already in love with someone else, he's uncomfortable with intimacy and so uses stories and humor as a defense, and so on- but I want him as an LI, that's my bias, and at least I'm aware of it.
In the end, I still don't think Bioware will be racist, or mean, or whatever, if Varric is not included as a romance option, and honestly, I'd rather they tell the story that they want to tell without too much pandering to fans (even me), because Bioware's story telling and character development is great, and has always been; and for the most part, I prefer to trust a company that has provided me with unique and enjoyable gaming experiences for pretty much all three(ish. I refuse to acknowledge any additional time that may or may not need to be added to that estimate
) decades of my life. That doesn't stop me from hoping for a Varricmance though, and probably won't stop me from being disappointed if he's not an LI.
Whew! Sorry for the wall of text, but my recent read-through of the romance thread made me feel like I needed to prove my (hopefully) not-terribly-entitled gamerishness, just my honest hopes as a fan, and the reasons behind those hopes.
***Not that runway models can't be BAMF's, they can be, I just feel like the visual difference between FemShep's still sexy, but obviously well muscled body in her black dress from Kasumi's DLC in ME2 was so different from her appearance in a similar dress in ME3 that she looked less like she was built to tote rocket launchers and more like she was designed for the fancy heels and red carpets that are stereotypically attributed to women in professions which require far less muscle mass and definition than an elite, cybernetic, warrior would probably need***
Cautiously optimistic is where I'm at
Not getting all my hopes up but I still think varric has a good shot (geddit...crossbow joke *cough*) There are a number of reasons why I think he's got as much of a chance of being a LI as the other male characters if not more so.
1. They brought him back
As someone stated earlier in the thread, returning male companions have ended up being romances in Bioware sequels (Garrus, Anders) Varric would just be following that trend
2. Oh no he's hot!
They made him ridiculously attractive in DAI and this was intentional . Sure the frostbite engine is powerful and his more realistic look is a result of that but make no mistake they gave the guy a sexy makeover. Either he's romancable now or Bioware likes to bottle fangirl tears.
3. He's popular (therefore a safe pick)
Bioware are trying to win back disgruntled fans by making DAI the true origins sequel. They are pulling out all the stops for this game including listening to fan feedback. I can't count how many cool things I've wanted that the team have already confirmed are in Inquisition. Cullen has already been announced as a romance character so this makes me believe Varric won't be far behind. It wouldn't be a stretch to say he was the second most requested male romance since DA2 (I know how big the Cullen fanbase is
). Romance is a popular feature of Bioware games and this would make a lot of fans happy.
4. More elves and humans? *yawn*
I feel like the DA series is due an unconventional romance and not just more of the same. I think this will be the game where they'll want to try something new. Dwarves have relationships and fall in love too so it's about time we see a dwarf romance. And Varric is just perfect for it. They've done all the groundwork already, we know he's funny and charming and no one needs "convincing" that he's attractive
Dwarves are awesome let us romance one already!

AGREED!
Though if I may devolve into a bit of shallowness, I find both bearded warden (whom I think looks a bit like Thorin as he's portrayed by Richard Armitage) and Solas (I love bald guys!!!) as acceptable potential LI's. Varric wins though, Varric always wins.

I definitely see it in his concept art (the resemblance is almost uncanny for certain versions), but it looks like they made him more rugged in the final version (just looking at the infamous Last Supper scene from the trailer) if prettifying Varric is a case for him being a potential LI, roughing up Feathers might be a case against him becoming an LI.
Also, speaking of The Hobbit, here's a little fun fact. The guy who plays Dwalin (big bald tattooed warrior dwarf) in the Peter Jackson version of The Hobbit also voiced Arl Eamon in DA:O.

Until it's confirmed otherwise, I am on the Varric for LI train. SOME BITCHES NEED TO BE MAKING BANNERS DAMN IT!

It's pretty hard to detect when he's doing his "Dwalin" voice (they're two very different characters) but you can sorta hear it during interviews and extended features. I'd recommend watch a few of them anyways, they're a lot of fun.

Wow I thought the female version was adorable, but the guy version is awesome. I like how the relationship changes depending on the inquisitor. Varric looks like he's got a bit of a "rival!mance" (read nonstop friendly jibes at one another's expense) going on with human!Inquisitor, and maybe a little with dwarf!Inquisitor as well, but he's all gushy and lovey with elf!quisitor and dare I say he's practically Moe with Qunquisitor (never thought I'd use that word to describe Varric). I'd love to see a female version done with as much detail. These really do a wonderful job of bringing out the personality of the characters (though the Moe bit confuses me a bit).
