Hey, so, this little tidbit in The Iron Bull's bio caught my interest:

 

[DA]: You said “just about everyone.” Are there people that he doesn’t get along with?

 

[PW]: The only folks The Iron Bull has trouble with are those who go looking for fights about the Qunari. He isn’t trying to convert anybody, but he’s not going to apologize for his way of life, and people like Varric, who saw the Qunari at their worst in Kirkwall, might take that the wrong way.

I found this rather interesting for two reasons:

 

1. Varric is the sort of person who seems to get along with just about anybody and everybody

 

and

 

2. The rest of that link goes on to describe The Iron Bull's demeanor as being pretty laid-back and loving the tavern life/enjoying the good in life. Basically, a personality that one would think would be a shoe-in to be buddies with Varric

 

But it sounds like those two may be at odds, particularly due to the Qunari events in Kirkwall during DA2.

 

Makes me wonder how Varric may have changed post-DA2. And maybe how he's possibly grown jaded in some areas.

Varric has a chance!  Excellent.  I'm trying so hard not to get overly hopeful, but it's really hard not to.

Hmm...Varric is such a personable guy, even when you rival him he's still pretty amicable. 

It would be interesting to see him arguing with someone. I mean genuinely arguing. I'm looking forward to seeing these two interact. 

 

I wonder if this will potentially affect the Qunari Inquisitors relationship with Varric as well. He really did see them at their worst in DA2 and even though we're supposed to be Tal-Vasoth I could envision him being a lot more wary of a Qunari Inquisitor.

I think Varric's gonna be pretty passive aggressive about IB. He's always very passive aggressive when displaying his dislike for someone, because being downright hostile would spoil his image. IB doesn't strike me as the sort of guy who takes passive aggression well. Those two are going to drive each other up the wall.

I think it's more that IB manages to hit a lot of Varric's buttons.

 

1. IB seems like the type of guy who'd rather fight his way out of a situation than talk his way out of it. Varric's not a big fan of this strategy at all, he likes talking himself out of bad situations if he can.

 

2. He follows the Qun, not only that but he used to pretty much be Qunari equivalent of the thought police. Varric has some baaaad history with the Qunari, and he's been given good reason not to trust their culture in the past. If you think the incident in Kirkwall was enough, try reading the comics, it gets even worse. And that's not even getting into why Varric's past and personal world views might make him adverse to the beliefs of the Qun. 

 

3. IB is a bit of a drunk. You'd think that Varric would be all right with that, being the fun party guy that he is, but he spent years of his life caring for his raging drunk of a mother, that's got to have left a bit of a sour taste in his mouth.

He has his first post-reveal dialogue with her at 7:54. He sounds less jovial than usual, and "Shivs" isn't the most complimentary nickname.

Yup were probably going to be getting more of that...leading questions in a dry sarcastic tone.

Interesting. You don't see that often in Varric. That is unless you are rivals with him. Woooooooo, he's super sarcastic when rivals with Hawke.

You know what, I think it's a good thing that Varric finally has a big issue with someone on the team. I loved how he was buddy buddy with everyone in DA2 but they can't repeat that for this game. This is because it only shows one side of Varric. If we want depth or character growth they need to change things up in order for us to get more insight into his character. I'm not saying they should pull an Anders! But there should be 1 or 2 teammates that annoy him or who he morally disagrees with this time. That said, I think Varric should retain his friendly personality most of the time, it's who he is and it's why everyone loves the guy.

Sometimes when people are too similar that can cause problems, as well. Instead of seeing all the good stuff you see in yourself, you only see your flaws reflected back at you. That could be part of it.

I completely agree! One of my biggest hopes for Varric in this game is that his character will have evolved since Dragon Age II, and it seems like that will be the case. It will be really interesting seeing the tension between Varric and the Iron Bull.

Well, he might not when he figures out that you're not part of the Qun.

It might just be me, but it seems like Varric isn't too thrilled with being a part of the Inquisition. He isn't really one to take up causes and he's probably not in this for your revolution so what is his reason for sticking around?
