Personal guilt? Because he helped lead the expedition that all the crazy red templars in DAI benefited from maybe?

That and while he wasn't exactly the most pro-active guy, he's got a good heart and probably wants to stop the flood of demons coming from the Fade.  I could see something this big motivating him to stop it.  After Kirkwall, he's probably very sick of demons and the like.  Thanks to some of Hawke's adventures, he's dealt with a few demons up close and personal.  He knows how powerful and how dangerous they can be, especially Pride.  

 

He's never been big on working with a group like this, so that's probably where the hesitation is coming from.  However, judging by the first trailer, he's also going to lose some friends in one of the attacks, if not during the initial Fade breach.  Whether or not the player knows these friends isn't relevant as far as I'm concerned.  This would give him emotional motivation as well.  Judging from the very first gameplay demo, he is still in it for the average citizen of Thedas more than any group or organization.

Yeah, Varric's a good guy that way. I'm just glad to have him along, no matter his motivation.

At the risk o f being pedantic: Those weren't actually his friends. Those were the people of Crestwood, a town the Inquisitor can choose to save or abandon.

They just made it look more dramatic for that trailer.

Yea I am pretty sure varric is going to be going through ALOT emotionally and I understand his issue with the Qunari (IB). I am wondering IF he is a romance how would they go about it?? I mean is he going to be the best friend kind of BF or what??? I am looking forward to how bioware pulls it off (again IF he is a LI). As for his motivation to join the inquisition, hmmmm maybe he figures the world is in chaos and hey why not? Its not like he has anything better to do right?? Or it could be for more serious reasons like wanting to save the world, go on a adventure to find himself, work out his emotions by killing the enemy etc. I mean killing demons, among other things could be great therapy

For all that comparisons to Garrus annoy me (they're actually rather different characters), I think his romance could end up being a little Garrus like. A lot of Garrus's awkwardness stemmed from the fact that he'd spent a good portion of the last two years snarking and killing his way out of emotionally difficult situations, and now that he couldn't do either, he wasn't sure what to do with himself. I think Varric might be in the same position. He closed himself off emotionally pretty thoroughly after Bianca, and even during his years with Hawke, he never opened up all that much. The most we saw of his inner turmoil was actually in the comics, when we witnessed part of his history with Bianca. If Varric is romanceable, I think he'll be a little awkward as he steps into unsure territory and learns to open himself up for the first time in years.

I love awkward romances. I mean I really do.

It's one of the reasons I adored Garrus and Alsitair so much, as well as Aveline's courtship of Donnic. So awkward. So cute.

It might just be me, but it seems like Varric isn't too thrilled with being a part of the Inquisition. He isn't really one to take up causes and he's probably not in this for your revolution so what is his reason for sticking around?

 

I've always thought his reasoning could be summed up as simply as 'I like this world. I don't want it gone.'

Someone on the Sera thread suggested "Magpie" for Sera, I think it's perfect.

As for everyone else.

 

Cass: "Seeker"

 

Viv: "Enchanter" or "de Fer" 

 

Iron Bull: "Qunari" or "Horns"

 

Blackwall: "Warden" or "Beardy"

 

Dorian: "Tevinter" (like Isabella's" Rivani")

 

Solas: "Baldy" if he's feeling cruel, maybe "Rowan" if not (someone's gotta be named after a plant, and Rowan trees have strong ties to magic, and magical protection in folklore).

The two faces invoke very different emotions in me. I associate DA:2 Varric's face with all the friendly jibes and silly antics DA2, and I feel all these warm fuzzy best bro feelings. I associate DA:I Varric with the comic books, the released DA:I info, and all the discussions on the forums and I feel all this excitement for this very complex and fascinating character.

Something occurred to me today guys. It was a "Ah ha!" moment. There are no female dwarf romances that we know of right? But that can't mean a male dwarf Inquisitor isn't getting ANY love right? Sooooo that means Bioware had to have done unique dwarf animations for his romances (since all the ladies on the team are taller!). So what does that mean? It means hypothetically these animations could be applied to Varric also. It means it's possible that he won't necessarily be dwarf only on account of his height. Just a thought.

They really aren't that different.

 

Both are marksmen, both are betrayed by someone they considered close, both play the best bro to the main character, both have a personal quest involving vengeance against said person that betrayed them ( which can end in death or forgiveness ), both are outcasts of sorts- Garrus doesn't exactly fit into the typical turian genre and Varric is a surface dwarf.

 

If Varric is romancable, that makes him romancable in the second game he appears in, just like Garrus.
