I thought that article appears to be referencing that he wasn't a romance back in DA2.

I thought that's what it meant too *shrug* . It couldn't have been refering to DAI ,otherwise there wouldn't be so much "um"ing and "ah"ing around Varric like there is right now. Take Cole for instance, DG flat out said "Nope he's not romancable guys" and repeated this several times. But with Varric there hasn't been a clear "no" just lots of half answers , side-stepping , no confirmation either way. This makes me think he is but they don't want to reveal it just yet.
This thread keeps me hopeful. I like the idea that they're trying to make it seem like he isn't because it will be big news when they reveal he is. It's just wishful thinking, but ya never know. :3

Also, so long as I can form a close friendship with Varric, I'll be cool with him not being romanceable. A little sad maybe, but I'm sure I'll enjoy the game regardless

And yes, regardless of Bioware's decision it's great to have Varric back.

I was kind of thinking that they would reveal him last like it's some big super awesome secret surprise.
If he isn't an LI though I wish they would just you know...tell us that already. So the fact that they haven't actually said no gives me hope.
Someone did ask, and the dev in question said he wasn't at liberty to respond but said that "let's just say Varric's still hung up on Bianca," or something like that. It looks at first glance like a no, but he said he wasn't at liberty to say. And then someone used the Fry meme, "Not sure if no or complicated yes."
I almost see him as...too good for a LI. Like those who say, if his best buddy Hawke couldn't get him, what hope does the inquisitor have? But he's so popular and such a fun character. I doubt he'll get a second chance.

I can tell you from experience that this is very true. It's worked great for my marriage, and for my parents (they just hit 37 years together,) and I'd love to get a chance to experience a romance like that in this game with Varric. As a lady dwarf, named Quartzite Cadash.

Dear DA Team,
I know the romances in the game are meant to appeal to a wide audience. I happily applaud groups like the LGBT community and PoC finally getting some good representation in Inquisition. Dorian alone made my face ache from smiling.
I'm concerned about some rumors I've heard about including a dwarven romance. The rumors I heard is that dwarves are considered having "child-like proportions." They didn't look like children to me, nor to other fans.
Edit: Thanks to a very dedicated poster, I found out where that rumor started. I now realize it was the rumor mill deciding to take his comment and spin it out of control. Here's one on his actual quotes on the matter, and I apologize for putting words into David Gaider's mouth in my previous paragraph:

People make a lot of requests, particularly when it comes to romance. Heck, if we mentioned that we'd added a mailbox into the game someone would request a romance with it. So the fact that dwarven romances or female kossith (and/or romances with female kossith) have been requested by some is hardly remarkable.
Insofar as romances with dwarves go, we might add one at some point-- for the right character. I've joked about finding dwarf romance icky in the past, but I have no particular objection so long as the dwarf in question doesn't look child-like.
I'm concerned about the other idea that you "can't just make a dwarven romance." Please don't mistake me, as I wouldn't want you to ever create a character just for a romance. I have too much respect for your artist integrity to think that way. Elves seems to be one of the most popular romance races, and yet not everyone is into them. Or wants only humans, hagspawn (more pretty boys) and tieflings (Valen was very pretty too) to choose from in our high fantasy games.
Most of us aren't asking you to just "make a dwarven romance." That's absurd. What we are saying is that we don't understand why not to take an already established character and give the ladies (and some of the gentlemen too) the option to romance a dear friend. We wouldn't want you to just dramatically change him for us. We love Varric for who he is, and think he would be a fantastic relationship
If nothing else, Varric's "love for Bianca" is really starting to sound a little creepy. While myself (and others, I'm sure) can understand "the one that got away," the emphasis on his crossbow is a little unnerving. If he's not a LI, then I can accept it...so long it as isn't Bianca again. Now, reasons like being very far from home, out of his element, feeling too scared to fall in love because of demons raining from the sky would make more sense to me than trying to tell us he hasn't gotten over Bianca in the slightest yet.
Despite the tongue-in-cheek nature of some of the signatures, it isn't really about "banging the dwarf" for us Varric fans. It's about us getting a chance to experience a love-turned-friendship, something that the ME team did quite well with Tali and Garrus.
We know that whatever your plans are have been set in stone for quite some time. We can respect that. I just hope you can understand a little more where the fans are coming from. Please let us know soon if Varric is available as a LI. I know you've been getting the LI question a lot, but this is the only returning party member and long time fans of this amazing character would like to know once and for all for this game.
Thanks for lurking and reading this. I know some of the writers/devs lurk in their character threads from time to time, so I'm hoping this is still true for our favorite dwarf.

That letter is so perfect! Have they really brought up before that dwarven romances seemed like a fetish? I just came back to this community after a long break and don't follow the game devs/writers as much as I should, but that would make me sad if it was actually something that was said. :c I mean, the reason I'm soooo excited that IB might be a LI is simply because it would finally be a break away from the "safe" human/elven romance choices, and something different for people (who wish it) to experience. I know a lot of people don't like stuff that they would consider "too" different, and I'm totally cool with that ~ but hey, Garrus was a hit and he wasn't by any means a traditional looking boyfriend.
I really hope they read it and took it to heart, it was so well written out. When I try to write things like that, my words/thoughts get all jumbled and I end up sounding more confusing than anything, so I'm glad to see something like this. :3

I saw the screencap from the thread he mentioned that in awhile ago, but it's been lost to the forum changes. I'm still looking for a cached version of it now.
You could romance a weird lizard birdman, a dying fishman, a woman who's constantly in an environmental protection suit, and a blue lady with a squid on her head in Mass Effect.
The idea that wanting to romance dwarves- which actually have analogues in real life, as opposed to the ME examples- is fetishistic seems a bit hypocritical to me.

Tell me about it. I couldn't find the source for that comment (again, the link that looked like it had it was from the old site and no longer works,) but if someone misquotes DG, his "Gaider senses" go off and he'll usually clarify his statement. Or Allan could as well. So if it's just rumor/doctored screenshots putting words into DG's mouth that he didn't say, then I'll just feel silly. However, since I do think he said that, that statement just makes me confused and sad.
I've definitely seen a post where he said it about qunari romances. Not so sure about dwarves...
