Ah ha, found the quote.  I wouldn't trust the source, but it goes like this.  I got it slightly confused and I'm going to edit my post to reflect that.  It's from DA confessions and yes, I'm still trying to track down the screenshots:

Gaider has been quoted (and there are legit screenshots*) as saying that a dwarf romance would be “gross” because dwarf proportions are too reminiscent of children. he also said that wanting to romance a female qunari would be catering to fetishists.

Edit: After about an hour of looking, I think these "legit screenshots" do not exist, and are taking the words DG actually said and blowing them out of proportion.

I edited the letter to address the right section of the comments.  I figure it like this: If that's all just internet rumor, then I accept whatever sass and verbal smackdown that I might have coming from my way from DG.  If I helped contribute to misquoting him, then I will feel like a jackass and I'll happily remove any references to that comment.

If it is true, however, I want an explanation for this.

Interesting... so just because they're short, eh? -_- No matter if the character in question is an actual adult, he's just short. grr. And female qunari = catering to fetishists... I suppose the human/elven romance only thing really has been a matter of personal comfort zone. D: Still, there's Mass Effect where you romance aliens... sooo.. So confused.

I'm very hesitant to attribute anything to Mr. Gaider unless we have confirmation that he actually said it. He's spoken about that sort of thing before:

It’s especially hard when someone takes something you’ve said and twists it, and then misrepresents it to others as what you actually said.. and how would they know otherwise?

I'd actually look forward to DG telling me I'm wrong.  I would be very happy for that internet rumor to be just a rumor.

That's what I've said as well.  If I'm wrong, I know for a fact he will come and correct us.  He's done it to one of my posts before (see his blog post about "laser-like focus on characters.")  While he was addressing that thread in general, he quoted one of my posts.  I've also seen him or Allan correct others before.  I'd really like that to be the case this time, so that rumor is cleared out of the air for good.  :)

Indeed, the Internet is like a huge confusing game of grade school-esque "telephone" sometimes... so jumping to the conclusion he said that or meant it like that is never the best idea. But I agree, I would like it to be proven wrong. It would actually make me happy if it was, haha.

I further edited my post to reflect that it was a rumor, albeit one that concerns me.

Oh dang, I didn't even see that it seemed that way. xD; I took out the part where I quoted you on it too, just to help clear it up. That wouldn't be a fun misunderstanding.

No it wouldn't.  I'm incredibly embarrassed right now, because I only wanted to address the rumor.  I do not think that any member of the DA team is a "judgmental shithead."   The rumor is what concerned me.  Which isn't looking true, but I wonder where it came from.

This was all I could find on dwarven romances.  Apparently the whole "child-like proportions" rumor goes back further than I had originally thought:

http://forum.bioware...rest/?bioware=1

I really have enough to contend with regarding giving real-world genders and sexualities equal opportunity in romances without having people imply they've some right to romance all in-game races as well. I mean, come on. If you're keen to romance a dwarf, just say so. It's hardly an issue of fairness.

As for difficulty, it's not much of an issue if we know the relative heights of the models involved. A DA2 romance with Varric would have been simple enough because we know that we have one human and one dwarf involved. We didn't do it because we didn't want to-- or, rather, because we wanted to do the other romances more. End of story.

I'm just not yet at the point where I feel the need to appeal to niche interests, or write romances geared specifically for those who have played so many romances that they need something different just to shake things up. I'm not specifically against it, to be honest, and had I known Varric would end up like he did I might even have planned it differently (hindsight is great that way). Regardless, I'm not seeking out dwarves to make into love interests and have no interest in starting.

It's not that complicated, is it? The question isn't "why not do it?" ...it's not as if game romances automatically manifest if there aren't enough reasons not to write them. Or maybe some people think that's how it should work. I can't really tell any more.  ^_^

With all that said, that rumor is pretty awful and I'd like to see it addressed.

Oh, that link to the thread has some good info on there. So it seems he isn't interested in writing a dwarven romance but "Varric was tempting". :P hmmmm.

Perhaps he just isn't keen on dwarven romances, which I can accept much more easily than saying it's a fetish... especially when he says that about Varric, haha. Still kinda disappointing... but we all have our opinions. :c

Thanks for tracking those down, and no need to feel embarrased. You were simply quoting someone else.

I'm just wondering where the whole "child-like" proportions part of the rumor came from.  The "fetish" part was on me, since I did get the races confused.  The former seems rather specific, even for the angry posters on tumblr/nexusmods/BSN.

That someone else who's a lot more angry about a lack of dwarven romances than I am, for sure.  :P

Insofar as romances with dwarves go, we might add one at some point-- for the right character. I've joked about finding dwarf romance icky in the past, but I have no particular objection so long as the dwarf in question doesn't look child-like.

So it's a "haha, romance/sex with dwarves is gross" joke and seemingly the suggestion that dwarves are more likely to look like children.

Huh. Not quite sure what to make of that. Like I said before, I don't really see what the problem is. Are romantic relationships between little people in the real world inherently "icky"?

Anyways, glad to see that Mr. Gaider isn't entirely opposed to the concept. I could see how he would be concerned about properly executing it, however.

For technical and story reasons.  For example, I think based upon Varric's personality and who he is, he'd make a wonderful romance.  I also know (thanks to a really well-done post by Allan on the OP of the romance thread) that oftentimes a racial model can affect a character's LI status.

Thanks for digging up that quote, Who Knows.  That explains where the rumor started from, and I can see how a game of "telephone" started from there.  I'll be the first to say that while I do arch an eyebrow at Gaider's quote, the internet decided once again to spin it as far out of control as they could.

The part that bugs me a little about his "child-like" statement is that..well...didn't we have a halfing romance for men in the BG games?

Only in mods.

To be honest I don't like the child-like or the joke. Dwarves in Dragon Age are a fantasy race, but they are called gross and joked about because they are short and stocky, characteristics that real life (adult) people can have.

While I now feel it wasn't as malicious as much of the internet tried to make it out to be, his "joke" was in pretty poor taste.  Still, as Morrigan said, at least he's open to the idea and the Varric LI fans could be pleasantly surprised in Inquisition.

I'm inclined to agree.   He stated flat outright that he's joked in the past about dwarven romances being icky (a comment I can see being quite hurtful to those with dwarfism and other related conditions,) and he said it was fine as long as they "didn't look child-like."  It did leave the impression that he said that dwarves are more likely to look like children, a statement which does utterly baffle me.  I've never looked at an adult dwarf in DA and said, "Gee, they look like human children."

Just in case you're interested, Gaider said that "dwarves are gross" in the early incarnation of the Varric thread, I was there. It was pretty clear he was trolling us.

Besides, Gaider isn't even in charge of writing Varric...

Whoa, no need to yell.

If you check, I addressed much of that in my previous posts.  And I also think it wasn't funny either.  He did mention the whole "child-like" thing again, in a post that wasn't joking.
