Yep, and I understand that. Back when I was part of the EA Marketing team when DA2 was in development, I pretty much had to toe the line for the people in charge. Now that I am part of the BioWare Online/Community team, I am working to rebuild trust with fans. I know this means little to you out there, but internally, it does have a difference.

It is part of the reason I post on the BSN less now. I want to be much less the heavy handed banhammer guy and become a guy liek any other member of the Dev team that when I say something, it can be believed (or at least debated rationally). I know there is work to do to build or rebuild trust with fans. Hopefully, when DA3 does come out and it isn't rushed, people will quote me and start to see me as more believeable.

Best of luck to you on that front. It'll take a lot of work from multiple sides but it can happen.

As I understood it, they actually improved last quarter.

As for the topic, It's been slightly over two years since the release of DA ][. It's too "late" for EA to rush DA:I out. Rushing it out would have been March this year.

Depends on your definition of "rushing," of course.

Can't comment on EAs' financial situation, but I did find these links which suggest something's wrong..

http://www.gameranx....global-studios/

http://www.examiner....ubles-explained

Considering, if we can believe Sheppard there, that their mobile division was taking up a lot of financial space, the fact that this was the division cut the most, as we saw through the loss of EA studios, then the bigger "traditional" games shouldnt be suffering anymore.

To be honest, the shutdowns are not a concern yet for EA, at least, not a major one. It's not like Sony, which is literally shutting down parts of its electronic divsion because it has so many hands in the pie it can't keep up on things like musc and TVs anymore.

That said, the only issue I see is moreso EA scaling back productions further. That means LESS Dragon Age and Mass Effect. Although considering they just signed a deal with Disney to produce Star Wars games...we got something to fill that void...

Answer given in the very first response of the thread.

Makes sense. Basically no matter what they say, they are wrong.

Well if you read the whole of it, I never said that no matter what they said was wrong.  That is called putting words into someones mouth.  I was saying if it was being rushed, they couldn't say because they are under corporate policy and they would be fired.  And the only way to judge it is by playing the game.

So I will edit it for you.

I am all for waiting to judge a game, but the way you framed it made it sound like there was no means by which a developer could convince you that a game wasn't rushed.

You say so yourself, no developer would admit a game was rushed, therefore, every time a developer says a game isn't rushed, they are lying to cover their ass. But if they admit that a game was rushed, than they are commiting career suicide.

DA3 is going to come out this autumn or early next year. That's 2.5-3 years to make a game. That implies that DA3 isn't going to be rushed.

Reinvention is a hard road to walk, espically on forums where people tend to remember slights much more than favors.

Best of luck to you, sir.

But they were working on the expansion (and DLC) for 6-8 months after the release of DA2 (Mark suffocated the expansion quite a bit before they publicized the end of DA2 development, but there was still some work put into it from what I've heard).

And they're switching engines (to an engine that had no previous support for the gameplay and cinematic systems that BioWare needs) and adding multiplayer.

I don't believe DA3 is being rushed, but you can't base that solely on the length of time between releases.

I suspect they will try to get it done right.
DA2 may have been a decent game but they all had to admit the re used levels were comically bad and take that hit.

ME3's ending controversy has just added to their need to release a finished product instead of a standard PC game release.

Or just added to EA's haste to squeeze as much money as possible as fast as possible from what is left of Bioware's (and its IPs) reputation.

Erm, yes - this is what We The Great was trying to say :). Ty for clarifying it.

Other than 'it', English sadly doesn't have a gender neutral pronoun, so people often resort to 'they' to be polite when they don't know the person's gender.

Can I just say, as someone who completely lost faith in BioWare after DA2, your comments in this thread are both encouraging and refreshing.  Thanks for being honest Chris.  I would have at least understood a lot of DA2's shortcomings if BioWare had been honest about them from the beginning. Instead...well I'll just leave it with this:  ahem.../clearsthroat....BUTTON AWESOME!

How hard could they be getting hit if they just signed a multi-year deal with Disney to do all Star Wars games?

Soooooo, BioWare, any new plans in that direction? [ahem...KOTOR...cough]

Two things (really three):

1) I've been on BioWare's forums since 2003, been reading Chris Priestly's posts for years, follow him on twitter, etc. etc., I've never seen him be as candid about anything as he has been in this thread.

2) We've gone from BioWare refusing...refusing to admit that Dragon Age 2 had any flaws whatsoever, to what we have now where Chris even had veiled criticism for the marketing of the game (which was a huge problem).

Not sure why I responded since you're just trolling, but with how quiet they've been about DA3, and with every indication that they are actually taking their time and not marketing this game as "AWESOME BUTTON" 6 months after DA2's release, fills me with plenty of (albeit lukewarm) confidence.

BioWare devs have to tiptoe on their own forums. Why do you let this trash keep their posting rights? There's like 100 of them, tops. Just ban them and let the hundreds of us who still like you plus the millions of people who never even visit a gaming forum enjoy your games.

Doubt it'll happen anytime soon. Unless the other game in development other than DA3 and the next ME is KOTOR 3, but I remember that they talked about a new IP.

Unfortunately people who call other posters trash are probably going to be pretty high on any such chopping block.

Well, while this topic is a combination of money and greater transparency, etc, I'd like to mention that I'd like more publishers to consider "fair price packages" for Aussies.

I paid AU$90 for DA2 and $7 for Sebastian, shortly after release. I assume DA3 will be similarly priced.

I actually can't recall how much I paid for a retail copy of The Witcher 2, but I did get a GOG voucher to bring the difference in line with world pricing.

Here is a related article. http://www.kotaku.co...e-in-australia/

Providing, like, a $20 Origin voucher on digital downloads of DA3 would be to the publisher's detriment (until trends change) but I think the goodwill it would foster could be valuable. (Maybe not enough, in monetary terms, but still worth considering?)

(PS. I like both The Witcher and Dragon Age. It's a pricing/loyalty/PR thing.)

That would be unfortunate if there was a community here worth missing.

I remember when Sylvius was the most negative poster on these forums.  Now he's practically a fanboy compared to some of you.

A BioWare fan getting banned while posters openly mock an employee to his face would be on par for how crazy these forums have gotten these past few years.

A bioware fan who doubles down on violating the site rules without regret would be about the easiest ban decision to make, while someone who violates the site rules because they're upset with the company but may moderate their tone if asked is not so clear. It's not crazy at all.

Everything bolded has made me optimistic about DA3 and the future of Bioware

Chris Priestly wrote...

Look at it this way. We know DA2 was not as popular with fans as we were hoping
. Yes, it sold well, but we know that there are fans who were disappointed with aspects of the game (reusing areas like "that cave", wave combat dropping form the sky, etc) and have said that if DA3 is not better, they will pretty much give up on the series.

So, from both BioWare and EA's point of view, we need to make DA3 significantly better than DA2. Simply getting the same sales & reviews that DA2 had isn't really going to be enough. BioWare and EA hope that DA3 sells really well, that critics and fans alike love the game, and they we can continue to make more games in the Dragon Age franchise in the future. This is what we want.
