 I'm going to post this in a couple of different forums because I'd love to get lots of feedback, but what is your favorite thing about ME? It could be the universe in general, or one game specifically, but if you had to narrow it down to one thing (okay, maybe two at most) what would it be?

I've given this a lot of thought and wrote it about it in my review on my blog, and I'm not positive I have a firm answer. Overall the richness of the setting is terrific, and I love the characters, the story and the variety of the missions. I love the amount of detail that is present, and certainly the visuals are amazing. I started playing ME because I was thinking it'd be a great RPG given BioWare's history of great RPG's, but 2 and 3 don't really have a strong RPG element, at least not like the first game did. I think what they have though, is a great RPG-style story. The gameplay, etc is all there, which is great, but I'm never drawn to a game for the action, I'm drawn to it for the story, and characters that I care about. To me it's as fully realized as Star Wars, Star Trek, any setting you'd want to name. I guess my answer would be the story and the character development. What's yours?

Difficult to choose just two...

I guess if I had to choose two it would be;

Atmosphere; ME1 really made me feel like it actually was The Future and not just Pretending To Be The Future. And the whole Normandy theme + the atmospheric codex with an excellent and informal voice really made the universe come alive. I've never really been into science fiction, but ME Universe is an exception. As is Star Wars: Knights of the old republic.

Story: The most important thing really, since it was the story of the first game that got me interested. The mysteries, the complot, Saren and especially The Reapers made this trilogy worth playing. Having such a powerful villain as The Reapers really motivated me, as I was eager to see how the universe would fare against them in the following games. Before ME2 was announced, I even expected them to start their purge already in the sequel to ME1.

However, I am glad they used ME2 to expand the universe and lore even more, rather than stress The Reaper Invasion. Some may argue that delaying The Reapers made ME3 worse, since it had to wrap up such an enourmous plot in little time, but I think that without ME2 being as it is, we would have gotten far too little time getting known with the galaxy before The Reapers arrived.

To me, The Reapers and Shepards fight against them was that made the plot, story and trilogy engaging. Now what The Reapers are defeated, Mass Effect 4 isn't something that is going to keep my attention unless Bioware can bring in:

More RPG elements; Non-linearity, good plotline/story, interesting characters and exciting lore.
