Sorry if there's already a topic on this, but I was wondering how Anders becomes a Warden if I didn't recruit him in Awakening. I assume he is recruited some time between the events of Awakening and the first timeskip in Dragon Age II (unless mages are allowed to sign-up, but I have a rather hard time seeing the Chantry let a mage leave unless the Rite of Conscription is inacted). I doubt that my decision to not recruit him was ignored and that BioWare pretended I did anyway, so I'm wondering how it was he got recruited.
...or was my decision just ignored and BioWare decided to pretend I recruited him anyway...?

I'm guessing it's the latter. BioWare doesn't seem to factor player choices when bringing characters back in the sequel. (Leliana and Cullen being the worst offenders after Anders.)

Unfortunately yes :pinched:

It is called a plot device.

I think bioware realizes the commonsense approach to playing these games is to take in all recruitable allie unless you missed him? He was awesome in awakening. Why no love?

It could have being worse. Mhiri could have being magically brought back from the grave just like Leliana .Taking Anders place. But yeah, Bioware decided to pretend that you recruited him away.

Ressurected Leliana? I was unaware of this glitch. OTL
Or maybe Varric's just making stuff up.

Its a retconn of a potential outcome of Origins as Leliana can die in that game. So Bioware decided to ignore that outcome and also Cullen going mad was another outcome that gets ignored. So not a glitch unless Varric made the whole thing up.The romance glitch i experienced with Merrill is certainly not the by-product of Varric's imagination.

Is there any different dialogue in DAII if you don't recruit Anders in Origins?

Like, saying, "I never knew Mahariel" to Merrill when she asks?

I don't agree about that Cullen thing. The epilogues aren't 100% accurate because they're supposed to consist of rumors that were heard around Ferelden.
People say that someone who might have been Morrigan could have been pregnant. Rumor had it that the Urn of Sacred Ashes was found.
I think that some Templar or mages noticed that Cullen was gone, and because of the Circle incident, they probably came to the conclusion "Cullen snapped and was sent away" and further rumors were made up from there.

He does say he never met Mahariel if you choose the sacrifice option.
This actually further convinces me that it is not BioWare just brushing aside our choices. If Mahariel makes the Ultimate Sacrifice, Merrill asks Anders if he knew Mahariel. Anders says no, but that he knew someone who had known the Warden.
