Well, if the whole not initiating it after Eden Prime thing doesn't work I suppose I could talk to her before Liara and use the fraternisation is bad line before telling Liara I only see her as a friend. I just hope the fact I didn't use the Paragon lines that initiate it after Eden Prime means there simply isn't a romance there.

I think with Ash when you talk to her about aliens on the ship you can shoot her down by choosing "You're out of line" on the left. If memory serves this cuts the romance off at the bud and next time you talk to her the message from her sis talks about Kaidan, not Shep.

It's actually pretty easy to avoid romancing Ashley. I always just tell her this is my ship I can have whoever I want on it. You're poetry is really bad blah blah blah. I've actually only romanced her once and it was hard for me.

My main character femshep didnt romance at all in ME. I didnt like Kaiden much, in fact he died on Virmire. She didnt want to sleep with a female looking blue alien either.

So shes anyones girl for ME2! So no guilty feeling about cheating! haha

there are several points where you can just make it clear that fraternization is inappropriate

some of those that come to mind:

when you're on the citadel for the first time and you are by the markets where you can "observe the view" - and this only works when you have Kaidan and Ashley as squadmates, so you should go there pretty early on...
you'll start talking and when you pick the Paragon option of "what's not to like?" Ashley will make a remark about the tinfoil miniskirt and wanting dinner first, you can then tell her that's fraternization...

when she wants to talk about Aliens on the Ship, telling her she's out of line might help towards non-romancing
picking the paragon options might persue the romance though it will tone down her ignorance towards aliens...
I think

when she's watching mail from home
- and if her sister is making a remark about how cute Kaidan is, you're probably on a good track to a Ashley-romance free playthrough -
but lets assume they were talking about how cute Commander Shepard is, you can then tell her that it's not okey to talk about how cute the commanding officer is...

so you don't have to be an a** all the time, but there are some key moments where you have to picka  certain option to make it clear you're not interested in a romance

and if all things fail, you can tell her during lockdown that he's probably as popular as her grand-father, it definately does not lead to an almost-kissy

or when she comes to Shep on the way to Ilos, there's the emergency break option of 'now is not the time'

hope it helps...

BioWare certainly didn't make it easy to stay single in ME1 did they? Ah well, I'll just have to deal with letting her down as gently as possible.

I got my level 60 Adept and he's not only single, but a virgin. No consort lovin, not even the chair in Choras Den. I am now ready for ME2. Besides, the LI's in ME2 are gunna be so much better (conversationally), you know it. I'm just wondering if you guys are gunna play your ME1 characters on your first playthrough, or start a new game?

I'm doing a playthrough of ME1 which I will eventually take into ME2 and I want to keep Shepard single in this one.  How do I avoid starting up romances with Liara or Ashley?

Stupid thread FAIL.

There's a dialogue option with Ash that comes early into your conversations and kills the romance. I think it goes something like, "You're out of line." It reinforces that Ash is your subordinate, and thus anything else is inappropriate. Liara is really easy to turn off, as you can tell her that you'd just like to be friends. There's no being mean or such, just denying attraction. I've done this in all but 2 of my playthroughs (bringing 6 characters over, so yeah).

Cheers for that, I'll keep my eyes and ears open for that dialogue then.

Why that? You can be nice to her 'till you Virmire-shuffle her later in the game

I think Virmiring them is the built-in "fail-safe" option for players. XD

Why would you want to do that ,this thread is stupid

Unless you want to keep her alive. I have multiple playthroughs with different scenarios I want to explore. So in some, Ash lives as a friend. In others, she gets killed off and Kaidan lives.

Me too!  Last count, I have 8 Sheps, (3 male  5 female)  but I like my She's and will carry them over after they go to the Hair salon and maybe get a little nose job at a Doctors.  :D

I've got  some  who are unattached, at least one or two who made the hardest choice of leaving their love interest at Virmire and one that just didn't talk to either of the romance options.

I had a little problem with the romances at first becuase I wanted to be friends or at least polite with everyone and had to tell them they missunderstood my friendlyness.  I like knowing backstories.  Unfortunately I didn't write down what decisions I made for most of my Shep's so I will some surprises in ME2,  I may have someone saying "I thought that we had something going, I must have been wrong" .

This is a good point.  Mine did too.  I may do this.  It always takes me awhile to get the hand of things.  i've got a couple of Shep's that are not my favorites so I may use them.  I don't know for sure either.

Being British I suppose I have a small advantage in that by the time I get it there'll be plenty about ME2 on the ME Wiki site, so if I'm unsure of anything I'll just look it up.

Kaidan: When he asks if he's out of line, choose "You're out of line"

Ashley: At the end of the conversation where she talks about the aliens, choose "Just Shut Up"

Liara: When she asks how you feel about her (usually after asking what your relationship with your human interest is like), choose "I just want to be friends"

Simple, professional, and doesn't sacrifice conversations.

And I've just discovered if you talk to Ash before Liara the second time around she'll comment she thought you'd be chatting up Liara. If you choose "You're out of line" and then I think it's something like "Better than we should" it lets her know that pursuing anything is a bad idea.

She said (in reference to me and Liara) "I thought we were getting along pretty well," at which time I replied "Perhaps better than a commanding officer and one of his crew should." You can then apologize for giving her the wrong impression.

This is the best one I have found as well, since it's tactful and Ash takes it well.

Sadly it cuts off the discussion about her sisters, but it is effective in ending any sort of romance.

I hope the romances in ME2 are more like the ones in Dragon Age. In DA:O they actually stated their interest in you and asked if you felt the same, and if you said no you could still persue a friendship path.

Ah well, seeing as I like conversations I guess she's going to have to get Virmired. Besides, there is a code ya know: Bros before hos man!
