What? They did this in ME1 too! I never had a problem with this thing. Of course, I never romanced Ashley, so maybe she's got like a ninja relationship thing going on, but for Carth and Liara, they ask you if you feel the same way.Gill Kaiser wrote...
I hope the romances in ME2 are more like the ones in Dragon Age. In DA:O they actually stated their interest in you and asked if you felt the same, and if you said no you could still persue a friendship path.

There's no way to be a nice guy and not romance her.

And now 'Michael Shepard' can hit on Tali without feeling like a jerk :-)

So it's better to kill someone in order to justify cheating on them, than to just cheat on them?

With my FemShep I did the opposite of this. I romanced Kaidan and left him to get nuked. That cutscene where Shepard is sitting against the lockers and Joker 'interrupts' really didn't make much sense without someone else talking to her!

A strange inference to draw. You should be thankful we aren't on the old ME forums, else I'd have to get all offended, and post a massive rant in response
In 'game mechanic' terms, I'd not pushed all the way through the 'romance path' for Ashley by Virmire, so Shepard and her were friends who were growing closer, after which something might happen. Alas, it was not to be, and when Kaiden did his whole 'survivor guilt' speil afterwards, the normally level-headed Paragon Shepard chewed him the hell out.
It made a nice difference in RP terms. I do also have other *romanceless* playthroughs, along with a tons of others, of varying kinds
Edit: And yes, the 'post Citadel escape' sequence is very odd with Shepard on their own!

I still think you killed Ashley to make room for Miranda!
Nah, I get what you're saying.
And I thought the sequence was alright. Shepard having a thoughtful moment on her own, contemplating that she might be heading into a death trap. I don't see why people think Shepard is ALWAYS running around barking orders or shooting people. Even a SPECTRE needs a little R&R sometimes.

You make a fair point, to be sure. Its just that on *that* particular playthrough, it was the first time I'd seen that scene with Shepard being on their own. I guess it was jarring, just for that. But, bearing in mind what had happened only a short while ago on Virmire, Shepard's loneliness at that moment was all the more... cavernous
Edit: And on the many, many playthrough I intend to do, Miranda will definitely get a look in. Kind of hoping that when she undoes her top, there is a Renegade '{motorboat them}' option

And let's face it, it's not like Shepard is James T. Kirk either. It's not s/he is going to sleep with every crewmember they meet.
though it would be fun if they gave you the opportunities to have more random sex like with the consort...
and if you over-do it you might have to go to Dr. Chakwas because you caught something...
consequences of your actions and all
my male Sheps usually are helpless romantics, though neither Ash nor Liara really were their type... now Kaidan on the other hand
but we'll see what happens - in various playthroughs - in ME2

Thank you for making this a thread, I have been constantly searching the internet/ME Forums for a way to not romance Ashley and still be nice to her.
@Criz-zone
Your suggestions are possibly the best i've seen. You should type up a FAQ.

I hope it's proven useful to you. I'm still running the experiment to see how best to do it, I'll let you know how it's worked out once Noveria and Feros are out of the way. Hopefully I'll know if it's worked before Virmire.

I did this too- I really love the whole romancing part of the game and the only way I could bring myself to finish a bachelorette Shep was to romance Kaiden then nuke him so still got at least some of the fun dialogue. Very tragically romantic in a roleplaying sense. Pity there was no "mourning" scenes though.

A bit off topic, but does anyone find it sad when you use the Renegade line after the choice on Virmire? For Ash it was "Fight hard, Chief. Die proud."

I've just come across some promising dialogue. When she's done talking about her family and how her dad is in heaven and asks how you view her religious beliefs there are two options for not judging her. One is a simple romance continuation piece, the other she replies to by saying "Just my commanding officer? We'll have to see about that." to which you can reply "Keep it professional." and that appears to be a romance ender. I'll let you know how it progresses.
Any progress update on how this worked out? I'm about to start a second single shep playthrough and it would be great to know whether this was a romance ender.

I'm doing a playthrough of ME1 which I will eventually take into ME2 and I want to keep Shepard single in this one. How do I avoid starting up romances with Liara or Ashley?
I cant remember at what point in the conversation you can turn Liara down but you will know it when you see it. It is pretty obvious you cant miss it.
I do however remember how to turn Ashley down though, it is when you walk in on her when she is talking to her sister on the phone, she asks if you heard any of what they were talking about, you can reply with "I am sure I dont have to remind you that talking about how cute your commanding officer may or may not be is against regulations". That ends her as a LI quick smart.
