Role playing was minimized in D&D 4.0, but we are currently play testing 5.0, where it is making a come back. I've been playing with my group for an embarrassing 26 yrs. It's what nerds did before xbox.
In one campain I am still in started in 1988, so it is good that I am not alone. My car's plate reads THAC0.
I personally really like how easy it is to DM in fourth edition D&D and think the role play issues is more group related. We will see about the next version.
BTW - Love the ME Paladin and yes timing ED is touchy for Tech Bursts.

Do I get the Rank 6 DR from Energy Drain if it hits a target, or does that target have to have shields?
Other than that, I've beat my head up against a few walls playing him. I am correct in my ongoing assessment of my skill that I totally suck at melee characters (except the Shadow, for some reason - oh, right, Tactical Cloak.) So, my recent string of games playing 66606 taught me I will not be using that build, anymore.

No its not. Not sure how useful that damage reduction on plat is since everything is doing so much damage. I have never put more than rank 5 in Paladin since I rarely use ED anyway. CE and FE are much better.
On a side note, this is probably the second best character against Both following QME. The first time I broke 200k on Gold is with him using a Geth Scanner. Dropped in mid match wave 2 with no consumables as well.

From the rank 6 evolution description in game:
Armor Boost - Reduce damage taken by 40% for 10 seconds by gaining a temporary layer of armor by draining shields, barriers, or energy from synthetics.

40% damage reduction is never useless.

Your car plate reads THAC0... that is F'n hilarious and awesome all at the same time!
If only I had a nickel for everytime I had to explain the concept of THAC0.

I know your pain, I'm 30 now and been GMing (I usually make my own systems now) since 16. Just last weekend my roommate poignantly suggested we start a campaign. =/ It gets a bit tiring particularly when I know we'll never ever ever eveverevereverrrevererever finish the damn thing.
I always finished my campaigns... one way or another.
The Epic Level book made for some hilariously OP campaigns where the PCs ascended to demi-Godliness before it was all said and done... creating challenges for them became challenging after awhile. If you ever need the campaign to end... you can always kill them
We ran an all evil campaign that required me killing all the players for it to end... their lust for power and the suffering of others would've made the Sith blush...

Dinkum: Really? I never played past 3.5... how does a CN Paladin work?
CN Paladins were possible even in 3.5, with one of the expansion books. They're basically fanatical warrior who enforce a certain ethic code, not much more XD
I loved the idea of your campagin anyway Mega! Would have loved to play something like that!
Now let me go on topic, before the ninja hits:

Protip: never, ever, ever trust the ingame descriptions in this game. Just by seeing this, I can say that there's at least a 90% chance that no, it doesn't work if you apply ED on synthetics

People not taking energy drain is missing out. I mean you can two shot most mooks with shields by snap freeze and energy drain. I love to pick on phantoms because of this.
Lol, and now two-shotting shielded mooks with CD-dependant powers is good? I must have missed something, cause that means taking something like 5-6 secs to kill a shielded mook... When, just to compare something, a claymore headshot takes 2 secs. It's not really efficient.
That said, I spec into ED too.

You did miss something. It doesn't take 5-6 seconds to kill a shielded mook and you forgot the cyro explosion is AOE.
Comparing a claymore to this is not even fair. I play the paladin because I like explosions, not because I want to claymore stuff in the face. I save that for my weapon classes.

I had real problems trying to be effective that way. On rare occasions, I could pull a combo together that did any real noticeable damage, compared to a solid UR gun. But it was almost impossible to do (for me, anyway.) It's easy with a kit like a Human Sentinel, because the refresh is fast, the bonuses feed into each other really well, and the radius and damage is massive.
The reduced radius and damage on the combo also has a longer cooldown, and I find I really can't put out enough DPS with Energy Drain to make it worth using, consistently. Normally after several wipes in a row, I sort something out, but I'm not getting any offense out of ED that my gun or Incinerate can't do better (in my hands) and the defensive abilities of it never seem to work for me. I do get a small amount of shields back (on rare occasions, for reasons I still haven't figured out, I'll get most of my shields back from using it) but the DR has never done anything noticeable for me. I suspect it is like other forms of DR, and doesn't factor the 1.4 damage multiplier out of cover, but I wouldn't know.
I'm pretty much back where I started, though. I've managed exactly one good game using ED, and pretty much everything else ranged from mediocre to a disaster. I'll either be speccing out of it, or putting three ranks in, at most.

Guess that depends on what difficulties you are playing on. I don't know how DR works, but I remember it's not you only take 60% of the damage. It's much less than that. It's still useful, but I don't find myslef dying that much with Paladin that I need to rely on DR.
Personally, unless I'm playing Geth, I only ED no more than 5 times a match. Yes those are for emergencies (Banshee warp ball or Atlas splash missile), but I found shield gate is enough for me. I'd rather take that 6 points, and put it into passives.
Also the fact that ED couldn't prime TB unless it's synthetic is another factor. Since Paladin relies on all kinds of explosions, I'd rather Incinerate than ED.

I feel you. I'm still debating if rank 5 is worth it, since it's so situational. When I do drain from banshees, etc, I did notice it fills my bar completely. Currently I'm running 56654 build, and I do like it because it's super useful when facing Geth.
If you only bring ED to rank 3, the usefulness against Geth wil be reduced for sure.

I'll be on some this afternoon.
Just checking where I settled with my last respec card, and I went with 56663. I've only played one game with that setup, so I'll see how it works for me. I traded CD for the Sabre, again, because I never did as much damage after I switched for lighter weapons. I'll play a little with amps/gear to see if I can get a fair cooldown, and still pump the bulk of my offense from the Sabre. I specc'd into weapon damage, instead of power damage.

Sorry, for the late reply but youtube has been failing to process my video. It's hard to explain over words how powerful ED can be so I hope my video will show its potential.
