In comparison with EDI.
Both of you are self-aware, capable of making decisions based off of external and internal stimuli, have emotions, and can perform actions that are largely independent, and even strive against, the purpose you exist. EDI, created by Cerberus, was designed to act as a cyberwarfare suite and assist with the function of the Normandy. She later becomes capable of far more things, at her own discretion, often against her original Cerberus programming. You, as any mammalian animal, exist primarily to live long enough to produce offspring. I'm guessing you have done more in your life than that, and have taken precautions, at times, to prevent that very action.
Basically, both of you are sentient.
Now, onto the machinery. The human body as much a machine as anything else. It requires energy to operate(ATP, etc), and utilizes hydraulics(water), electricity(nervous system), pulleys(muscles), programming(DNA), etc.
It even uses liquid coolant.
