Matchlock guns are not exactly the earliest firearms though. But I'm expecting Thedas to develop its equivalent technology very soon, likely within Dragon Age itself.

I seriously doubt the Devs have any plans to take DA in that direction, sorry.

I remember Gaider denying they were planning to add hand-held firearms. Of course, those plans might since have changed, but since they're apparently being held back to keep the setting unique, I don't believe there'd be any new plans yet.

I'd guess the mage would be mentally interlinked with the weapons.

If any people is likely to have the technology to link a mage's mind with mech, it would be the qunari.

Risen vs Risen 2 (and it's gunpowder). First game was 1000x more awesome. Gunpowder is for slackers.

So, do the mages magically take control of the dreadnoughts, next?

Something like this would be enough.

no. this piece of artillery comes with many problems like logistics, supplies, sabotage threats and many others. not to mention that single mage can entropic death it's crew to oblivion.
it is also too much of a prize and loss if forces defending it will be overrun. dispatching too many forces for cannon protection will also leave weak spot in main army.

to put it very simple. gunpowder did not solved anything in our world and i doubt it will solve anything in Thedas. you see even your first argument have a flaw - because mage can also have a gun. perhaps it will solve a problem with darkspawns. but it will also empower mages even more, cute mages like ones we have in tevinter.

rainbows, butterflies and bright future.

p.s. by "bright" i meant the glow of fires spreading all over thedas. and we have a lot of examples of it like ww1, ww2.

ta ta
secrets and lies.

Wouldn't gunpowder put an end to the dragon age and cause a new age to form?

 ^ The Powder Age?

Actually, "Dragon Age" is just a calendar thing, the name of the current century, decided by the Divine, not an era as in "Industrial Era" or "Middle-Ages", so I don't think so.

This said, it could announce interesting times. That time when the Chantry went ballistic (among other things).

Of course, the Divine might name the next century The Powder Age if black powder really takes off.

Well, that does it! They need to bring back Sir Roderick Ponce Von Fontlebottom the Magnificent Bastard!https://encrypted-tbn3.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcTAfatRr8y7Zqn5u_BiDG_95ZT5WiK6l4aMylOzLAM6JhOao-cJzw
He will arrive on the shores of Orlais, and take it over in the matter of minutes with Mirabelle II.

To me that is confirming that they are planning to add non-hand-held firearms. It is clearly a suspiciously specific denial.

Giving everyone effective gunpowder will solve all of the major problems of Thedas.

(1) Magic will no longer be descriminated against, as everyone can have access to something just as (if not more) dangerous.

Gunpowder isn't a tasty imagination with a doorway.

Well, yes. Gaider certainly left that option open, and from what I remember of context I think that was intentional. (He might have specifically said they intended to use cannon eventually, but I don't remember that.) But then, the fact that Thedas has cannons isn't news. We all knew the Qunari had them, and that this was probably going to become relevant eventually. That's not the same as them becoming common, though.

I wouldn't get too carried way.  Gaider probably phrased it that way because it's been established since Origins that the Qunari have cannon that they use as their greatest military advantage.  If we're expecting a Qunari invasion, we should be expecting their cannon, too.

Perhaps you do, but you also haven't exactly presented your case well.  You haven't offered an explanation of how wide availability of gunpower would bring an end to mage discrimination.  You also haven't acknowledged all the problems that widely available gunpowder could create.

Like people shooting mages on sight.  Or the fact that it would put elves--Dalish and alienage--at an even worse disadvantage...unless you actually believed that humans would let them have access to firearms of any sort.
