Personally I find the Piranha to be the best overall shotgun. I even like it better then Reegar+ Incendiary and miles better then Claymore.
I find claymore to be one of the most overrated weapons in the game. Still a great gun, dont get me wrong, just overrated.

The Claymore is just a really well balanced weapon. It has such awesome power in each shot, but those shots are slowed enough that its DPS is good without being gamebreaking; it's got the right weight and rarity for its power; and it's got a pretty decent effective range for a shotgun. IMO it's one of the few weapons in the game that really got the balance just right.
Are there better shotguns? Sure. And they tend to have 'lol' prefixed to their name due to how facerollingly overpowered they are.

It's over hyped because we see in just about ever build discussion of any class in the game a few posts talking about just slapping the claymore on that class and wrecking everything. As for the Reegar, one of it's main draw backs that being ammo capacity is something you really do have to deal with where as the claymores supposed big draw back for a heavy gun that hits like a mule is negated by clever use of mechanics.
In the end it comes down to players style as well. Like one of the posters above I use the Pirhana more than other shotguns. I use the Claymore the odd time. The one gun that mystifies me is the Wraith, some games I use it with great effect, other games I can't hit the broad side of a barn.

The one thing I am great at is feeding my friends to the Crab. I can give lessons on that!!
Cannot believe I saved Akula from that feeding last night. I did all the hard work of running in there to revive him, just to shoot my Venom, and the Crab release his "grip" on his Turian!!

For killing bosses... yes... for killing mooks, no. Claymore does both very well.
The main thing I love about the Claymore is the limited exposure time... you pop out, blast something, then retreat while reload cancelling, or move forward toward the next target. Really helps on the GI with 3 points in fitness and no Cyclonic...
