On September 16, 1950 the Gray Aliens completed their takeover of the Cumbrian Pig Breeders Association. Within nine months they had substituted Fakin Bacon for the real stuff the world over. The 'bacon' you've been consuming isn't really pork at all. It's an extruded algae substrate layered with flavoured coal oil and salt. They thrown in a proprietary chemical cocktail for flavouring and other, unknown purposes. No one has had real bacon in over sixty years.

If you want to verify this, simply consume a cooked test strip of 'bacon'. Then cover your head with a layer of aluminum foil and insert a plate guard made of the same material into your mouth. Eat another piece of 'bacon'. Notice the metallic taste? There's your evidence. With your flavour centres blocked from the alien mind control rays, you can really taste what food is made of.

Well, I know this is hard to fathom for modern people, but in the old days, Ciba, Du Pont and whatever they they're called, hadn't set up shop yet. There wasn't a lot of colors or dyes about. Even less of them possessing a modicum of durability. Nor where they terribly bright. Movies and TV-series lie.

 

So when someone came up with the idea that they could make just enough purple cloaks to go around for the royal families, by exterminating the Murex snail, it was quite the sensation. Since there wasn't enough dye for anyone else, purple became kinda exclusive.

How long would it take for you to become fluent in the local language?

Fluent...It depends on the language. I am not sure many people can ever speak another language fluently BUT I can pick them up pretty fast. I speak four languages well enough I suppose. I can pick them up very fast to just get around and do business. I would say I would have to be in the country for a year to get to the point where I would be considered a good speaker tho. Tho in some languages like Thai and Chinese not sure if I would ever be anything better than "fair". That was way too much info sorry.
