Not sure if anyones seen or read the post over at Arstechnica on the whole of the ME series and if not, its definietly worth a read :

arstechnica.com/gaming/2013/05/the-simple-lesson-i-learned-from-369-hours-of-mass-effect/

Have to totally disagree with ".... and why the ending, good or bad, doesn't matter." not sure what he was smoking when writing that part of the article and he's been given quiet a bit of stick over it in the comments on the article.  Personally, I wouldn't put ME3 on the same level as ME or ME2 - even with the Leviathan/Citadel/Extended Cut DLC's, its way too much of a FPshooter and not a patch on the earlier games.

Talking about endings, I  finished the 2nd play through of ME and for the first time as a Vanguard and it still took my breath away (the sight of Soverign entering the Citedal and how inisignificant the reaper looked) and knocked me for six!  Still can't believe the number of characters I missed or didn't save or simply intimidate the first time round and how that will change in ME2.

Agreed , the ending simply ruins everything and makes you not even want to play ME3 ever again , don't even get me started on the FPS Shooter part , they took away all RPG parts of it and stripped it down to a cover based FPS. :?

He's made some really good points about the whole series and what makes it so good but he's take on ME3 is something else. ME and ME2 got a lot of things right, although there's a few things in ME2 that I really miss from ME1 - the skills tree, the weapons and armour upgrades, the dialogue between the Shep and the crew when your out and about, the Mako and just being able to cruise around and explore, not being able to crouch and sneak, I hate the lack of access to the citadel and the size of c-sec..and being able to walk off the Normandy .. and it goes on.. but its still such a cracking game.

Me3 on the other hand - well was like watching a movie on TV where someone else has the remote and you get access to it once in a while .. a real waste.. although I think they messed up the Arrival DLC as well.. now what a waste of a fantastic story.

Theres one post that really hits home:

"Which brings me to my point: if an ending to a series is so bad that it
breaks previous games and stops people from enjoying them as much as
they used to, then the ending does
in fact matter. I can't enjoy, let alone play, the series as a result
of the ending. None of my choices matter, the entire plot of this game
doesn't matter, etc. Character interactions were just one part of the
series, and if you invalidate the entire premise upon which the
interactions take place, it makes them seem pointless.

I enjoyed
the hell out of the series until the ending of the third game and was
willing to overlook the numerous flaws in all of the games because they
were all so immersive and well realized. I thought that the Mass Effect
series was going to be this generation's Star Wars. Instead, sadly, I
see it as just another sci-fi series.
