Yeah that's basically it. I'm pretty good at predicting spawns so I've had a lot of Recon Mines in the right place, and it's awesome, but it's pretty inevitable I won't get it right every time. Usually that costs me time, an Ops, or even a Medi-Gel because I didn't kill the non-Recon'd spawn fast enough.
Try to either place the Recon Mine where they're going, or just engage with Proxy Mine. If you're running Incendiary Ammo on your weapon, you can clean up small groups of enemies pretty quickly by using Proxy to detonate FEs, or just use it to debuff them and then shoot the crap outta them.
The Engineer is, as you've noticed, harder to play on the move than the others due to his cooldowns being taken up by Recon Mine and Proxy Mine. I just recommend sticking to cover alot, and using cloak liberally. If you take shots and you're still on cooldown, try to heavy melee, and then cancel out of it quickly by pressing the melee button again, but press it twice so you also instantly go into cloak, then roll to the left/right to avoid more incoming fire. Also, in case you're not aware (though you probably are), Volus can use waist high cover as sort've an even better right hand advantage as long as the enemies are sufficiently far enough away from your position. If they're within 5-7 meters, they'll still be able to shoot you, but past that, you should be able to use waist high cover without getting shot.
Also, i'm curious, what weapon are you using?

I didn't want to lolReegar too much, I only used it once on the Vanguard.

Tried Hurricane and Talon, both with Doucheruptor ammo. The Tech Bursts stunned mooks okay but a pair of Scions would just laugh at me. Think I'll stick to more automatic weapons (Eagle maybe?).

Yeah, I only use the Reegar on the VanGOD and Adept, and usually I roll the Claymore on the Adept for poops 'n' grins.
From my experience, a Hurricane with an Acolyte backup is what works best. Use the Hurricane for mooks and stuff, and only pull out the Acolyte to strip the Shields off of bosses, then light'm up with the Hurricane (Which, should have an Extended Barrel + AP or HVB + Incendiary). It's a great setup, because you'll still have a 200% (Or near 200%) cooldown, provided both weapons are at level 10.
An Eagle would work as well. Eagle + Heavy Barrel only does 10 points less damage when compared to a Harrier with an Extended Barrel.

I play volus quite a lot myself but over time I settled on a much more supportive role. Never could get a good aggressive play down on my own, but I'll keep working on it. Wanna be as diverse as possible. Your guide's a very good jumpstart.

The Engineer is easily the hardest one to get used to playing aggressively, but when you get used to it he's great.

Good guide. I'm kind of new to the game and was going to try and do a gold solo with the engineer for the lone wolf challenge. I was wondering which consumable I should use for the armor slot. I'm trying to decide between cyclonic or power amp and wanted to see what you thought.
Sorry I didn't see this sooner.
It depends on your weapon set-up, but I definitely would NOT go with a Power Amplifier. Recon Mine, ESPECIALLY during a solo, should be used for slowing enemies down and debuffing them (On the Volus, anyway). Only detonate it to help deal with Phantoms, or if you've just got some mooks caught in it that can be finished off with a detonation.
Really, though, everything works. Cyclonics will give you some added tankiness, Adrenaline Modules will help you with escorts/kiting, Shield Power Cells will help you get Shield Gate back if you're on cooldown and can't use Shield Boost, and Power Effeciency Modules will help you if you have bad cooldowns.

If what you're saying is that Recon Mine's debuff won't stack with Proxy Mine's, then i'm nearly 100% sure that you're mistaken, unless you can provide a thread with evidence stating otherwise.

Peddro seems to disagree with you Jack. I think Recon Mine never stacks with other Recon Mines but will stack with other debuffs.

TY for the response. Managing the engineer's cooldowns are alot harder than I thought (for a solo). I just unlocked the vangod and I think it will probably be alot easier with himToLazy4Name wrote...

I've played extensively with the volus adept, engineer and sentinel. I want to like the volus, I really do. However, I dislike them quite a lot. The only reason for that is due to the weird camera angle, it throws me off completely and makes me hate the volus. I was using a particle rifle with my volus merc and it was really off putting. It's kind of a really lame, unnecessary gimmick that they made the volus characters really tiny and really fat. It affects gameplay in a bad way.
Hey, we all have our little quirks. As long as you're not saying they're bad classes, it's fine by me, though I do encourage you to just try to adjust to the camera angle.

I really love the Engineer and I don't spec for Proximity Mine (since it never works for me). I also love the Adept! But I cannot play the Vanguard and have never tried the Sentinel. I am probably not playing the Vanguard right but will definitely test him out again!

I HIGHLY recommend you re-think your Engineer build. Proximity Mine 5A grants you a 20% damage bonus, which is a HUGE benefit. It also detonates Tech Combos, staggers, and does reasonable damage.

Every time I try proximity mine it just doesn't work right. It will launch a mine but nothing goes off or it just doesn't hit an enemy when I launch it. It's incredibly frustrating.

Eh personal preference. I hate the Turian Havoc (seriously that Havoc can go to hell, Havoc Strike is the DUMBEST POWER EVER) so it depends on what you like. I tend to like squishy support characters so the Volus is right up my alley.
