I am sure you noticed on Female characters in Origins if you play again...they have collars. At first I thought it was their shirt, closer inspection shows their chest is bare and they wear collars. Is this an honoring of the Dogs of the area or something? Why the women? It is a very strange Ferelden custom I am curious to know why

It's been a while since I looked at the game and I can't be bothered checking...is it possible that the "collar" is used to cover the join of the head model and the body model, which is otherwise hidden by armor for the guys?

Possibly, yet at the same time a few times, say when you are changing armor with companions, it won't be there on some models. I was just curious. It seems like a codex just waiting to happen honestly

I always assumed it was a depiction of the amulet they're wearing, but I've never checked by swapping in another amulet and see how the portrait changes. So I don't know if I'm right.

It's part of the light armor models. On the male light armor, the neckline covers the head/body model joint. On the female models, their armor displays a wide expanse of chest and collarbone, because WIMMINZ, so the joint is covered with the collar. If I remember correctly, on the medium, heavy and massive armors, the female models also have full coverage of the torso and the collar disappears.
There is a piece of neck armor called a 'gorget,' but... yeah, they look like collars to me, too.

It took me a month to realize male characters had a necklace and not just atrocious hygiene

I wonder if it's possible to attach a chain to their collars.
