I want to choose a weapon focus for my human (thus medium) rogue.

I noticed that rapiers (medium weapon) do not equip as two handed, is that a bug?

If that case I guess the only way to get the 1.5x strength bonus would be to use a club / morningstar / quarterstaff or spear... all with terrible crit ranges.

Rapiers are a strange case because they're medium, but finesseable, and only midgets can two-hand them.

You should be able to two-hand any other medium weapon with a human. If you want a better weapon selection, take martial (or exotic, but martial is better) proficiency, or take a dip in a class that gives it for free, such as fighter.

The rapier is a predominantly poking weapon with a single hand sized grip upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/f/fb/Different_Rapiers.jpg , it's not designed to be used two handed. Using it two handed would be awkward.

The problem is this exception isn't mentioned anywhere.
And small creatures can use a rapier two handed. (but I think they cannot finesse it)

On a related topic... why aren't light crossbows getting the 1.5x strength bonus?
Short bows (also medium sized) and heavy crossbows have the two handed bonus.

Edit... oh wait nevermind, the light crossbow is small.

They can, if they have Monkey Grip. But then they can't use Power Attack with it (though Insightful Strike, from swashbuckler, works then). Midgets are very weird/bugged in that regard.

And yeah, I agree with Kamal, but I'm just talking about game mechanics here. There are other weapons that should be changed as well, in order for them to resemble their real life counterparts correctly.

What? A mighty bow applies a (limited) STR modifier, but AFAIK, you don't get two-handed bonuses with ranged weapons.

All ranged weapons are mighty in this game... it's probably a bug since it invalidates all mighty affixes. (I have v 1.23)
And it appears you also get the 1.5x str bonus with them.

With 14 str I get 3+ bonus damage with a normal shortbow.

Hmm... no, they're not. What kind of character are you playing? Which are your stats, classes, levels...? 14 STR is just +2 anyway.

What the Character Sheet reports about your damage with missile weapons is "unreliable" to say the least ("horse hockey" would probably be a better descriptor).  The proof is in the play.

I suggest you download a mod called Vordan's Hero Creator.  You can arm yourself with pretty much anything (it wasn't updated past MOTB but you can add almost any property to gear).  You can then go into the arena there and try things out.

E.g. Just now, I loaded up a level 4 fighter (a SOZ startup character), gave him +20 armor so he could stand around and plunk away with impunity, a shortbow, another shortbow with Mighty 20, and a belt with +12 STR.  He then took on streams of goblins.  The character sheet showed no difference in the stats for the two bows (1-6 + 16), but with the normal bow he was getting 1, 2, 6, etc. damage and with the mighty he was doing 14, 16 etc.  Note also that with both bows, he was getting results lower than the plus - with the mighty, his minimum is reportedly 17 but he only scored a 17 once in about two dozen hits.  This suggests that the 1.5 bonus for two-handed is also reported but not applied.

What I believe is happening is simple - the character sheet report makes no allowance for the fact you're holding a missile weapon.  It reports it just as if it were a melee weapon.

Again, though, I advise you to get the mod and play around with it.

Only thrown missile weapons (throwing axes, darts, slings) are automatically mighty. As I_Raps says, don't believe the character sheet. It frequently lies.

Even with thrown weapons, the character sheet will still tell you they do 1.5x the strength bonus without anything in the off-hand, which isn't the case. You'll never get more than 1x the strength bonus, so you might as well shield-up when using thrown weapons (although a tower shield will reduce your attack).
