I have a number of classes I regularly play on gold/platinum with no fitness, or very little. You just have to get used to it. The way I see it, my squishiest classe are ****ed with or without that fitness, might as well go full glass cannon.
Just some I regularly play: HA, Volus Engie and Sentinel, GI, GE. Many others of mine have only 3 or 4 points, or a melee spec: Demolisher, QME, QFE, for example.
The geth often get cyclonics (depending on how I feel, though, GI I often prefer shield power cells), and Demolisher does too, but the others usually get adrenaline or power cells for survivability, and QME gets power amp for more nade ridiculousness.

I must say that I can feal the diference in 300 pts of shields. I was runing my Fury with maxed fitness for a long time before respecing to only 3 points..so that's 300 less if you take the stronghold wich I was using before it got replaced by my new personal crutch wich I can't seem to play without any more-wallhax.
So before it was 925 shields and that covered even platinum, but with this setup of only 625 shields I have trouble even on gold if no cyclonics are available. And that goes double if geth and triple if collectors..of course lagg will boost those numbers to three digits.

Usually no more than 3 points if they're already super squishy except for Drells.
Drells need to run as fast as possible.

Fitness isn't necessary for TGI and AIU because of high base shields (750) and their special grenade powers.
