Instead of coming up with shortcuts and apologies - things like "they've already made an epic trilogy" - how about embracing a damn big story in this universe, well thought of and planned, with a cohesive storyline, bigger worlds to explore and a cast of new and some of the old characters we've grown to love so much.

Because Drew Karpyshyn left.

You guys really didn't see it coming? Through all of the posters, trailers, commercials?

The game is going to be about BLASTO, THE FIRST HANAR SPECTRE. Period.

:D

A great idea! an adventure game like the good old Day_of_the_Tentacle :P

We're talking about Bioware here, not Naughty Dog.

Until they fire Mac Walters our beloved ME universe is only going downhill from here. He has no clue about what he's doing.

I wouldn't say fire him, but have write characters instead

Someone needs to keep the writers in refreshments. He can do that. Presumably.

So do we know for a fact if Bioware are doing this, or is it just a rumor? Because I seriously hope they're not considering a prequel or a spin off. Most people are making it abundantly clear they don't want that. After everything that has happened these past 14 months, i'd like to think Bioware wouldn't be dumb enough to do something that people are clearly stating they're not interested in.

Though they keep saying that they have not made an decisions as far as I know, the fact that they keep talking about prequels and nothing about anything post-ME3, leads me to believe that what we will get is the next game taking place during or before ME3.

No, we do not know. I don't think even Bioware knows yet.
But still I have this feeling that they are going to go down the spin-off or maybe prequel route in the end. It's the easy way out after all.

Quite frankly this article is complete rubbish. Gamble considering a game about Javik a good idea? Has he completely lost his bearings?

I've got nothing against Javik. Nice supporting character. But let's consider the fact that he was actually released as a DLC character, so a chunk of ME3 gamers probably haven't even seen him at all.
Also, imagine Javik's big ugly head on the cover of a video game, shall we? I bet that would sell like cupcakes, wouldn't it? /irony

These are all stupid ideas. Go big with a full on epic trilogy and have the courage to move the MEU forward or leave the Mass Effect universe alone...

It's a rumor they're feeding.

For example:

Parsing through your thoughts on the next #ME game. Would you be more interested in a game that takes place before the trilogy, or after?
@CaseyDHudson

"Without going down any specific path, you can think of many, many
different areas throughout the IP, throughout the history, where there
are large wars to be won, large battles to be had, and a lot of
development to be done around where these races came from, how they came
about," executive producer Chris Gamble told OXM UK. "We have so much to draw from."

From what I gather, the only solid information on the next game is it uses the same engine as Battlefield 3.

After reading ME: Evolution, He who laughs best, this article and experiencing ME3's ending for the 4th time... yeah, I finally agree.

If they wanted to do this, it should have been done as me3 dlc, not a full game. Not impressed with the sounds of this at all.

The easy way to kill the franchise, I´d say. When an ending does it best to completely invalidate all that came before, interest in prequels have to take a big hit. It can be done, Moorcock is still writing about Elric, but BW has Walters instead.

just chop /cut out mass effect 3 out of the trilogy and have a new installment written by someone that actually knows how to structure a story, and pays attention to the narrative.

For that to happen, we would need an entirely new team to work on Mass Effect and I wouldn't be against that.

I wouldn't mind a spinoff if it featured Harbinger as the main bad guy.... it would certainly be a hell of a lot better than Kai Leng.  Judging by how they trashed Harbinger though, I certainly don't see that happening.  I don't trust these people anymore.  But yeah, only something like that would get me to buy a spinoff.

And neither does Hudson.  Before ME3, yes, he was very good.  But now, no way.

BTW Kai Leng rocks. He's THE badguy that makes Shepard look lame. For one and only time in whole trilogy. A guy who messes everything Shepard plannes, kills his friend, constantly interrupts. Good he didn't kidnap Shep's LI in the process :)

All of above is why I enjoy omniknifing him so much - probably more than any other badguy.

What does the departure of the guy who got them into that mess in the first place have to do with fixing that problem?

Who says he got them into that mess? Maybe he could have pulled it off. Certainly Mass Effect started sinking once he left. ME2 had that Terminator thing. Then Arrival. And then ME3.

Y U hate on Drew K?

Karpyshyn was the lead writer on ME1 and was also the lead writer on ME2. “I was there pretty much until we locked down most of the story. I left in the last few months when we were kind of polishing things up, passing things over to Mac Walters, who had been one of the writers on the first game as well. He took over the lead writing,” Karpyshyn explains. “For the third one, we outlined some ideas, but of course, as a project evolves, ideas kind of change and shift. They took things in different directions. We did that with 2 as well. We had no idea that Cerberus is going to be as big as they were until after the first game. People kind of gravitated to them, so we kind of expanded their role.”
