Which came first? Knowledge or skill?

I was just thinking about old matches, and I realized that my ability to play higher difficulties came before build or other knowledge.

I remember playing the Vanilla Human Sentinel on Jade Gold.  One of my first Gold matches and the only knowledge I had was BEs.  Thinking back, I knew nothing of spawn budgets, which enemies appear which waves, sync kill mechanics, aggro patterns, enemy tendencies, nothing.  Silver had gotten too easy and I had to step it up.  I had my trusty Jsssie, and we extracted - I was just glad to prove my worth to a lobby that, unlike so many others, didn't kick me due to inexperience.  I rocketed at a key moment on wave 10.

With that being said, I'm curious as to which came first for other people.  Were you knowledgeable first and your ability caught up?  Or, akin to my situation, did your ability precede knowledge of the aforementioned stuffs.  Some may say that knowledge is a part of your skillset, but I think there's a distinction.

My sub optimal builds are built around my skills and I can at least keep up with those of more knowledge. Seeing as how I utilize no info here.

Knowledge supplements skill. Skill comes first.

Skill led to the creation of knowledge, which in turn, taught others how to be skilled.

Skill came first for me, but knowledge made said skill better. Or in other words:

"I made da good push buttons but da BSN made me go fasterfied push buttons."

Every weird game mechanic can be overcome with skill.

Skill comes down to repetition and talent. Some people (like myself) just don't have the quick reaction that others have developed after hours of FPS's.

But Mass Effect values knowledge of the game over raw shooting skills. ME3 is the only game I can outscore my buddies who would normally put me in my place in every other shooter out there, simply because I understand how the game was designed.

The moment man devoured the fruit of knowledge, he sealed his fate. Entrusting his future to skill, man clings to a dim hope. Yet the Store RNG is the means by which all is revealed. Beyond skill and knowledge lies an absolute reliance on consumables and guns. It (usually) matters not who you are, a Shuriken X isn't going to cut it.

Had to be skill. I'd already been successfully playing Gold long before I had ever discovered this place, and this place is where I'd learned most of what I know about this game.

This.  Seriously, everything I can do in this game is because of my understanding of game mechanics.  My aim is crap.

Skill, which only got me so far, and it has continued to improve from of all of the playing I have done. In fact, I would say that all the ME3 multiplayer I have played has made me better at video games in general. Knowledge has allowed me to play more effectively (I used to be an idiot who didn't invest in debuffs and so on) but I tend to ignore some of it (such as wave budgets) since I don't need to rely on it while other stuff is just interesting and has no effect on how I play (knowing how XP is rewarded).

I think a thank you is due here to Cyonan and the others who have taken the time to data mine the game and relay that knowledge to us so that we all may gain from it.
