I have the aim of a potato, so I crutch off GI knowledge. I'm ok at the game, but my knowledge is what makes me better than most.

I find Ketchup to be quite obnoxious, personally.

On-Topic: Kinaesthetic ME3MP soldier here. I do not say a gun rocks or sucks without shooting it first, I do not say a power rocks or sucks without casting it first, and I most definitely do not say a melee attack rocks or sucks without swinging my arms or legs first!

I think of skill as applied knowledge. You learn how to do something, and with practice, you do that thing with perfection.

So knowledge comes first.

A mixture of teamwork and my friend being able to clutch waves got me through my first gold games. My aiming was poor, and I didn't have a very deep understanding of the mechanics for a long time. I did play well in a team scenario, though I couldn't clutch well at all back then.

I did figure out the basics pretty quickly, in that I looked at things in a "rock, paper, scissors" mindset. Shields? Overload. Phantom? Stasis. Armor? Fire/big weapons. Guardian? Combat Drone behind him or mail slot.

I struggled with things if I didn't have a direct counter, but I tried to be the one on the team who brought the counter if we lacked one.

I guess the answer in short is "Skill" for me. Specifically the skills of good teamwork and basic pattern recognition.

This.  Seriously, everything I can do in this game is because of my understanding of game mechanics.  My aim is crap.

I'm in this boat as well.

Players build their skill until they near the limit of what it can offer them, at which point they complement it with knowledge.

Knowledge is part of skill. The below are the likely common knowledge picked up from bronze and silver as well as during the first few runs in gold. Not everyone will know them all but chances are you'll know one or more of them by the time you have run your 10th gold game. Without knowing some of the below stuff, you would not have a full range of techniques (for example, grabbing enemies rather than standing up to shoot them)

i) noticed the impact of armor units on stuff without AP/piercing
ii) using soft cover which most unaccustomed to shooters probably learnt with the atlas (block the firing hand).
iii) rough idea (probably not the full details) on when sync kills occur
iv) What is stagger and how to do it with at least 1 kit
v) How to spam dodge when medigelling
vi) What is AoE and which power/weapon/effect is an AoE
vii) What is a grab and how to execute it

I was just thinking about old matches, and I realized that my ability to play higher difficulties came before build or other knowledge.

I remember playing the Vanilla Human Sentinel on Jade Gold.  One of my first Gold matches and the only knowledge I had was BEs.  Thinking back, I knew nothing of spawn budgets, which enemies appear which waves, sync kill mechanics, aggro patterns, enemy tendencies, nothing.  Silver had gotten too easy and I had to step it up.  I had my trusty Jsssie, and we extracted - I was just glad to prove my worth to a lobby that, unlike so many others, didn't kick me due to inexperience.  I rocketed at a key moment on wave 10.

With that being said, I'm curious as to which came first for other people.  Were you knowledgeable first and your ability caught up?  Or, akin to my situation, did your ability precede knowledge of the aforementioned stuffs.  Some may say that knowledge is a part of your skillset, but I think there's a distinction.

What came first was experience. Getting me2 down to a science made memp rather straightforward. It also didn't hurt the the first Alien i got was the AA, and the first pistol was carnifex, which made jumping into gold pretty a rather linear progression. KroSent sealed the deal, and I never looked back to other difficulties unless training someone new or grinding for a title.

Knowledge.

Wherever I may lack skill or natural talent, I can compensate with my ability to research and theorycraft. That allows me to create builds and setups far more optimised and powerful than most players, allowing me to punch above my weight and succeed until I garner enough experience to do so with increasingly less optimal setups.

Neither.

Knowledge and skill are of a symbiotic realtionship. With knowledge comes skill, with skill knowledge improves/refines.
Or you could say knowledge is "cognitive skill", and skill is "physical knowledge".

What always comes first is the will to try out the unknown, which constitutes the only way someone can actually form new knowledge/acquire new skills.

Optimal builds, enemy weaknesses, game mechanics = knowledge. Learning to use all of them = skill.

Therefore; knowledge -> skill

When I started out I was both unskilled and dumb- so neither. These days I am the same, but not afraid to party and look stupid- and that's what really counts!

Knowledge comes first. You have to know how to play the game before you develop the skill to play the game effectively.

You know how to control the character because the manual tells you how to do it. Your skill develops usually at the same rate as your experience (that is if you are learning from your experiences) but you can't develop skill if you don't know how to play the game.

Well I'll tell you that my first MP expirience was back in the demo..I made a lobby, took a human adept and landed in ghost vs cerberus and the first thing I noticed was whaat...I can't stop time?
Yeah that will give you a clear picture of wht came first. I think that my skill as well as wisdom came with expirience.
