I seriously believe that they should set the game immediatly after the Reaper war, simply because of the fact there are so many ways to go from from there. I know that Bioware has said that they do not want to focuss too much on the existing squadmates, but they can just have small cameo appearances (although I firmly hope that the Normandy itself will play a bigger role.)

But think about the possibilities. New species attacking the citadel, the krogan who revolt against the council species, a new threat from another galaxy, the rebuilding of the milky way, the leviathans who try to take over again now that the reapers are gone, the revival of Cerberus, etc etc etc.

I know that it's hard to pick a canon option, but if you would have to choose a general canon ending, i'd say the Destroy - Save Quarians - Cure Krogans ending would be the easiest, most appealing to the mass public and most logical ending. Destroying the reapers is what Shepard was planning to do for three games before suddenly he got two options where writers would have to deal with giant space squids. Saving the Quarians would also be the most logical option. Tali has been a squadmate for three games, the Geth die anyway with the destroy ending and alot of people love Tali, so I think that this appeals to the most people. And finally saving the Krogan. This might be the most difficult to agree on, but I think that because of the fact that Shepard is good friends with Wrex and Grunt, and because Mordin also wants the genophage cured, curing the genophage will be the best option.

So if they pick a good canon ending, and keep squadmates in as cameo characters, and start over again with a new protagonist people will both get more answers, an awesome setting and alot of fun. :D

You could set it hundreds of years into the future, establish a post-ME3 history, and still have some of the old characters return, like Liara, EDI, and Legion.  That would be interesting, and would bridge ME3 to the new series on a more personal level.

Edit: I just remembered EDI and Legion should be dead if they go with the destroy ending from ME3, but there are ways to worm around that.  I'm sure not "every" synthetic died during that purge, and conveniently that could include them.  Maybe Joker took EDI offline before the surge hit them and she got passed over.

And putting her on the memorial wall was... a practical joke?

She's dead.

I think the potential enemy is more important than the time scale. Where do you go from Lovecraftian outer gods as the main foil?

leviathans - plain and simple (hell: the creators of the reapers should make for one hell of an enemy - even more as they prefer things like indoctrination, infiltration, subtlety and secrecy to direct attack (not to say they are incapable of that))

greetings LAX
ps: given that, that they might want to take over now, all Species would be fighting them, so you would be able to play as ANY RACE (and be given SPECTRE RANK - thus having as much freedom and influence as Sheppard...maybe even your own small fleet detachment (it was something i wanted in ME3 - i mean i wanted real influence, not be an errand-boy in a linear story...))

About 30 minutes after Shepard passes out in the Citadel core room with the Illusive Man and Anderson's dead bodies and has the trippiest dream ever.

She wakes up and finds the Reapers are dead after all. The Crucible worked! Unfortunately, it's a hard won victory and half the galaxy is dead, all the major factions - especially humanity - are crippled.

Faced with this, Shepard has to travel the galaxy and make first contact with new life, to seek out new civilizations, and boldly go where no-one has gone before.

I really like my synthesis ending, so I don't want a game set after ME3 which makes one ending canon. I'd like the next ME game to be set a few million years in the past. Best in the time the catalyst was created.

Well if you look up the indoctrination theorists up on youtube about the how ME3 ends then you either have to imagine that.

1.If bioware want's to appease those theorists or already has a plan, then they will be deciding how the game progresses and how much farther into the future you can go.

2. Will wait and hopefully listen to what the fan base wants and get us back to some hardcore RPG, with the same if not better mechanics for battle and a few more customization choices.

I for one would love to see (If they don't already have something planned out) a fleshing out of all the races, their backgrounds, full of lore and reuniting of all your old buddies from all three games. Perhaps choosing Paragon or Renegade would have  real distinctive changes to the universe. Such as Paragon, you work more like a diplomat and help save worlds from theirselves, bringing peace to each planet one by one, and settling new colonies, expanding and creating an immense eutopia throughout the galaxy. Or with Renegade, you create armies, to take over planets to place under your rule until you unite the galaxy under an iron fist like the Protheans had.

More in depth love choices, something that you can actually foster as time goes on. Say you stuck with someone through the three games, or perhaps the person that you had the largest love relationship in the past is now your lover, or partner in conquering or bringing peace to the galaxy. Could you imagine a couple blue children with Liara on a Eutopia, or perhaps Aria as your Queen and partner to rule as gods of war.

If they took a bit of time, and actually made the gameplay immersive, fleshed out the story, and allowed you to make life or death or perhaps galaxy changing choices, things that would make the game so much fun to play and even go back and play again and again to see what different things you could do I think they could definitely do great in sales and fanbase. People who have never even heard of the Mass Effect series would go back and buy the trilogy just to see what had built up to such a game.

Also, customizing your ship or making your own and controlling fleets, or just some ship battles would be awesome.

Alas we can only dream.

I'd say about 100 years, that clears the deck for most of the human characters, except Miranda, also makes it possible for Shepard's daughter with Liara to be old enough to be a character that factors into the story.

I would be pissed if they pulled something like this.

Ditto....my cannon Shep never did anything with Liara.

Im seeing some rumors about bioware execs wanting to do a spin off to the series. This hurts me. Hopefully they just start fresh with something we dont already know the overall ending to.

Simple - you do not try to top it. You go small. You go personal. You create a character-driven narrative with a charismatic, striking villain and generate drama and threat through gradually building connection to characters, then using that as a link to introduce the threat. The protagonist/antagonist dynamic would be that of two characters at the opposite end of the spectrum, but of ones who are essentially the same.
