EDIT: I've noticed a similar attitude amongst fans of Cerberus to the fans of Rorschach in Watchmen. Nite-Owl generally gets a bad rep in that fandom for questioning why such extreme methods are necessary. Rorschach calls him weak for this, and the fans agree. Ironically, the writer intended the exact opposite of this, as Rorschach is an absolute monster, as is, when all is said and done, the Illusive Man and Cerberus.

Anoleis is pretty annoying, even if his annoyingness leads you to some other interesting characters on Noveria.
Watching Gianna arrest him is amusing, as is her interaction with Shepard in ME2.

the whiny douche-fest that is Kaidan in ME3 nails his own coffin in that respect.
@op: LOL!! and...Kaidan as a spectre?
He'd be fit to wash my car, but that's about it.
He's a better candidate than Ash, but not by much. And what do they do with their Spectre status? Bodyguard Udina, then wait for Hackett's orders or beg to tag along on the Normandy. Uhhh, Spectres are independent operatives folks. It's better from a WA point of view and storyto send them to Hackett. At least then they become a war asset and you can headcanon them doing something other than lounging on the Normandy the whole war.

I can see how the other three can be annoying, but how is Jacob annoying? People usually complain about Jacob being boring, not annoying.

Thane doesn't preach it, he just practices it. Ashley, like all good, unthinking zealots, pushes her ignorant agenda and it manifests through xenophobic hatred.Made Nightwing wrote...
The writers do a damn good job of presenting multi-faceted characters including *le gasp* one who believes in a higher power (Thane spends more time talking about religion than Ashley does, honestly) and one who has his **** together (Alenko perfectly captured what is expected in an officer and a leader and apparently merited hatred for this). That none of the arguments for hating them make any logical sense just makes me want to facepalm.
And please, Kaidan a good officer and leader? You've obviously never been in the military. Nobody would follow a whiner like that. He'd be eaten alive and have zero respect from his subordinates.

I think you're going a bit far with how you're characterizing Ashley. I more or less agree, but I don't think Ashley is an unthinking zealot. I think she uses it as a basis for her judgements, but the whole reason I hate her character stems from her rather narrow idea in alliance infallibility. She's a speciesist, she DOES judge based on her religious response, and I don't agree with any of her beliefs at all, but I wouldn't go so far as to call her a xenophobic fundamentalist.
As for Kaidan, I'll tell you as a junior officer (and prior-enlisted soldier) and a leader that he does have a very solid background. I don't see the whiner tendencies that other people do. He's a quiet, more reserved man who's much more complex and philosophical than Ashley, but that doesn't make him worse. He'll question Shepard, but he won't get outright upset or let his prejudgments totally skew his opinion. He observes and legitimately questions actions that he doesn't believe are right. I'd actually want him as a subordinate officer with his capabilities for looking at things from a different perspective.
As for Nightwing's comment, that was rather pretentious on his part.
EDIT: As for Thane, he's not proselytizing his religion. Shepard asks him about it and he responds. He gives you information more than anything else.
As for Ashley: My Shepard is a Sole Survivor. After talking with Ashley in the galley right after leaving the infirmary for the first time in the first game, she asks about Akuze and what made you survive. After telling her that it was my skill, strength, and will to live that got me through it, she dismissed it as "someone up there was looking out for you." That's when I immediately and permanently soured to her character forever.

It's unthinking because even after all the evidence, all the experiences she's had, she still ends up being speciest throughout the series. Even Pressley came around eventually. That sort of stubborn ignorance is indicative of a distinct lack of thought. Acting on ingrained beliefs rather than having the intellectual flexibility to reevaluate with new information.MassivelyEffective0730 wrote...

He's too indecisive and far too reflective to be a good leader. He would cripple under pressure and the requirements of battle to make life or death split-second decisions. That level of angst is either for retirement or for emo adolescents.MassivelyEffective0730 wrote...
