If Bioware wants to give me Dog that's ok too.

I'm okay with the spider (mainly because your the only one who could write in it in away that would make want to lovingly hold one of those things. EWw! I hope it's cute). I would fit with the lore of the game due to the the fact that giant spiders are the product of holes in the veil, and magical runoff.

I could also see cats, and other charmed animals as class pets for mages.

Put your LI on a leash and there you have it, an obedient Dog for a pet.
I cringed so bad typing that, this is why I would make a terrible troll... Eureka!

Mages could summon trolls as pets, possibly in forms like Fire, Ice, Earth ect.
I'm going to pat myself on the back for a genuine eureka moment that contributes to the discussion.
