It's all a matter of playstyle.

From my experiences in ME1 I think sniping is pointless beyond belief there was never a situation I was in where if I used my SR where I would be at an advantage.

Well, Infiltrators and Soldiers both have the Sniper Rifle talent and First Aid talent.

Don't worry about healing, if you are playing on Normal or lower you will come across two things, one is an Armor mod that regens health and the other is Medi-Gel which refills your health instantly (but has a cooldown to use.)

I found it useful sometimes, particularly in that being open area on that planet in the Artemis Tau cluster (trying to not spoil anything).

Well, it's not USELESS but I can't think of a situation where it was a breath of relief that I had it.
If you plan on playing on the hardest I would recommend either Soldier or Vanguard because both of them have abilities that reduce incoming damage and on the hardest you will be feeling the pain.

I myself do not really like the Infiltrator or Engineer classes, although I'm sure someone would say the exact opposite. I prefer the Soldier class, followed by Adept, and then Vanguard. Biotics are super fun, but so is the adaptability of the Soldier.

Actually, you can only play on the three easiest difficulties to begin with (Casual, Normal and Veteran).
You can't play on the hardest difficulty (Insanity) until you've completed the game once to unlock the difficulty before that(Hardcore), then completing the game again on Hardcore.

Soldier: Pistol, Sniper Rifle, Shotgun, Assault Rifle
Infiltrator: Pistol, Sniper Rifle
Vanguard: Pistol, Shotgun
Engineer, Adept and Sentinel: Pistol only

Don't play on max difficulty. The game isn't fun on the highest setting its just frustrating.DiGNiiTy wrote...

If I were you I would play as a vanguard to start. Its a great class to pick up and play. And it gives you a feel for guns and biotics. But at the end of the day it depends on your play style.DiGNiiTy wrote...
I am new to Mass Effect, but after playing DAO I decided to try out the Mass Effect series. I got the PC version with two DLC's (Bringing Down the Sky and Pinnacle Station). I just wanted tips on the better classes, and any NON - Spoiler game tips. Thanks!

You should know that you do have some ability to customize. For all the weapons and most of the powers you can unlock achievements by using them enough. Then when you make a new character you can select One of the weapons or powers you unlocked as a bonus skill.
So if you really love Singularity or can't live without barrier then you can bring that power over into a different class. AI hacking ftw! ;D

I find engineers to be a little weak personally. Their tech disables are nice, but adepts get better crowd controls and their abilities work equally well on both synthetic and organic enemies. Bastion adept is easily the most powerful class in the game, as it allows you to damage enemies in stasis. All boss fights at any difficulty become a joke with bastion stasis and lift. But to each his own.

Or an Adept with an assault rifle bonus talent and become a Bastion while making your stasis really good.
Or become an Infiltrator commando, ect ect.

Soldier is probably the easiest to choose on a first playthrough (bracing myself for the inevitable disagreements), as it's a primarily weapons-based class, so the unlockable talents are mainly focussed on increasing the damage of your firearms. They also have the highest hitpoints of any class, so can take quite a bit of damage. Because of this, you can probably pick normal or veteran and still have a decent chance of being able to finish the game.
Adepts and Engineers are more talent-oriented, and although all classes can use all weapons, these two are only really any good with pistols. This means that at lower levels you'll use up your biotics/tech abilities and then have to wait a while for them to recharge, using your pistol to whittle down enemies, which isn't really all that effective (especially against some of the tougher enemies). Because of this, it's probably best to stick to casual difficulty.
Hybrids are a different matter, but generally if you pick either Vanguard or Infiltrator, you can probably make it through on normal, since they're a combat mix. Sentinels are biotic and tech mix, so it's probably best played on casual.

A good tip is that if you want to open every crate and hack every terminal, then it's probably best to bring along a tech specialist in your squad. There are three of these characters to choose from in your roster, so you can probably find someone to suit your play-style.

I think the solider is the best for the first play through my reasons being:
1. you get access to all the weapons which means you stand a good chance of unlocking bonus weapon talents for subsequent characters
2. Your tough as old boots and can afford to make mistakes in combat, which is good if your just getting used to how the game works
2nd play through I'd say go adept or engineer to unlock the tech and biotics abilities, then you can start the experiment with what suits you best. Just my opinions though, tbh if you put it on casual your not going to have any major problems no matter what you do really. It is worth playing as an adept at some point though because they are hilarious (esp if you get some nice equipment that reduces skill cool down).

Then again, you can also choose to make your second character an Adept with the rifle skill since the shotgun isn't really all that necessary aside from the Carnage ability. I mean, a shotgun is a shotgun, and does damage whether you're skilled in it or not, really.
