I always get a bit "proud" when I recognize a voice actor in another game/animated series or something and can pinpoint what character they are playing in that previous game/series, especially if they are using a slightly different voice. Most resently, a few days ago I recognized Laura Bailey as Serana is Skyrim - Dawnguard, which is basically the same voice as Kira Carsen i SWTOR.

It usually drives me crazy because often the voice sounds realllllly familiar and I can't recall where I've heard it before. :P

Oh yes, THAT feeling happens waaaaaay to often, hence the "proud" feeling when I actually know who the voice actor is or at least the previous character. I remember I once saw the film "Tristan + Isolde" and the voice of the character Aragon (Tristan's father played by actor Richard Dillane) just resonated with me and I was sure I had heard him in somepast  RPG. I've come to the conclusion that his voice might remind me of the character Aarin Gend from Neverwinter Nights... but I don't think it's him. Still, really cool voice.

If you have shown time and time again that you can do it, and the people that hired you are happy with you, why wouldn't they hire you again?

Voice actors have a real talent of bringing out the character that you want them to do. You don't have to build the character around the voice that they're going to portray.

It is expensive to hire big name actors. Not everyone in a game can be a Patrick Stewart or a Liam Neeson.

When I heard Fenris at the opening of Skyrim (he was driving the cart), I immediately shot out a tweet to Danarius giving him the heads up that I had sighted him and was disappointed in his now having twice let him escape #TevinterMagisterFailAgain

edit: name fail :pinched:

I love encountering familiar voices in games (Greg Ellis as Captain Rumford in Diablo 3 anyone?). It feels like bumping into an old friend.

ACTUALLY, while Jon Curry (Zevran) is in Skyrim, he's the "MaleEvenTone" which is not the Khajiit, and most definitely not Kesh the Clean (I think all the Khajiits are played by someone else -- none that I have heard have the MaleEvenTone).

Marcurio in the Bee and Barb (Rifton) is voiced by Zevran if you want an example of the voice. It's higher pitched than his Zevran voice, and I actually didn't even recognize it until someone pointed it out.

He doesn't voice the Khajiit? I could have sworn J'zargo sounds like Zevran.

Nope, looked it up.  Khajiit males, including J'zargo, are voiced by André Sogliuzzo.  Jon Curry is all those high-pitched males you hear like Marcurio, Drevis Neloren, and many companion mods as it's the default voice for males.

It was really weird hearing her Lutece voice, which was basically the same as her Sylvari voice in Guild Wars. And playing the trooper in SWTOR is like hearing femshep all over again. ^_^

If we can manage to role-play with friends we've known for years who might play two complete different characters in the very same gaming session in two different table-top rpg we've played, then why wouldn't be we able to have enough suspension of disbelief to accept two characters sharing the same voice in a video game?

Well, it's a bit cheaper and easier to hire one actor to do multiple roles than it is to get multiple actors for multiple roles, especially when some of those are just bit parts where they say one or two lines.

Keep in mind that, just like with all businesses, when you find someone who can do a job really well and you trust them, you are inclined to work with that person again. When you know that someone is a great actor, shows up on time, does great readings, is a pleasure to work with, ect, you want to work with them again. It is also important to remember availability of talent is an important consideration. If the writers or similar say "We think soandso would do a great job as this character, but that person is tied up with other roles or film, TV, stage, etc then we likely can't use them.

I don't think it is a "closed group" as each game we make brings in new characters voiced by new actors, but if a trusted actor can do the job and is available. then we would certainly consider using them again.

Any game is made better with some more Steve Blum. He's also Wolverine in pretty much anything except the live action stuff. As much as i like Hugh Jackman, his voice just isn't Wolverine's to me.

I also like His Eliphas the Inheritor work. Is it weird that i could listen to this all day?

Would love for my mage characters to roar, "I will show you the truth you fear!"

I gotta agree that Steve Blum is good.  I'm a fan of the Xenosaga games, and my favourite character was Canaan, who was voiced by Beng Spies in the second game, then Steve Blum in the third.  Beng Spies did okay, but once Steve Blum took over, Canaan's personality just *clicked* into place in a way that Spies hadn't managed.

Same here.

The best example of this for me was the voice actor for Harbinger (can't for the life of me, spell his last name) having a role in the Dark Knight. I always thought that one police officer sounded familiar until my younger brother pointed it out to me.

Also, me and my brothers love to play: "Is Steve Blum in this game?" Whenever we get a new one. Seriously, it seems like that guy is in everything, and all using that same voice lol. I know he can change his voice, but he seems to be almost typecast as "that one raspy voice" in most games I've played.

For example in Dawn of War 2 Steve Blum plays three different main characters and they all have the same voice lol. Not that I think he is a bad actor or anything, its just that his one 'voice' is so distinctive, and the guy is in soo many games that my brothers and I are surprised when we DON'T see him in the credits, lol.

Huh, alright. Thanks. Gotta tell those people in the Skyrim thread that they lied to me when they said that.:P

It may not be a "closed group", but the reality is that the pool of talented, english speaking voice actors(who work cheap enough to be feasable for video games and saturday morning cartoons) is really pretty limited. So you do tend to see the same couple dozen or so names over and over again.

How can everyone just ignore Jim Cummings? The man has been doing voice overs since the 80s and has been in pretty much every Bioware game that I've played in some fashion. Not to mention he was all over the place in Skyrim as well.

YES YES YES

Ashley's voice actor, Kimberly Brooks, is in a bunch of stuff too. She's Daisy Fitzroy in Bioshock Infinite, XCOM, Gravity Falls, Arkham City/Asylum, DA:O. She's fantastic, though; I'd happily play or watch anything with her in it.

Go onto imbd, you will see what other things those actors have been in.

For example, Gideon Emery who plays Fenris in Dragon Age 2 also plays Poseidon in God of War: Ascension.

She also played Commander Palmer in Halo 4.

Really?  Which Bioware games did they appear in? The only ones I know of is Marina Sirtis (Benezia, Mass Effect 1) and Kate Mulgrew (Flemeth DA:O and DA:2)

I know some of them have done other games:

Micheal Dorn (Marcus, Fallout: New Vegas, Atreides Mentat, Emperor: Battle for Dune)

Patrick Stewart (Emperor Tiber Septim, Oblivion)

René Auberjonois (Mr House, Fallout: New Vegas)
