I have heard a lot of the same voices across multiple games. Did anyone else notice that Brynn (Jacobs girlfriend in ME3) is the same voice as female Hawke? I have played female Hawke and female Shepard in all of my many playthroughs of both games and it's a strange experience hearing the two voices talking to each other.

Jo Wyatt's voice is sexy<3. Its certainly strange to hear her voice the nurse at Ostagar. Her voice has certainly improved with age.

Its a good group though. It's like following actors in a stock company, which is cool. This is why I hope to hear more Steve Blum, Jo Wyatt, Grey De Leise, and so forth.

I am really hoping Michael Beattie comes back as a major character. That would be fun after his tour de force as Mordin.

Keep in mind that, just like with all businesses, when you find someone who can do a job really well and you trust them, you are inclined to work with that person again. When you know that someone is a great actor, shows up on time, does great readings, is a pleasure to work with, ect, you want to work with them again. It is also important to remember availability of talent is an important consideration. If the writers or similar say "We think soandso would do a great job as this character, but that person is tied up with other roles or film, TV, stage, etc then we likely can't use them.

I don't think it is a "closed group" as each game we make brings in new characters voiced by new actors, but if a trusted actor can do the job and is available. then we would certainly consider using them again.

You also bring about new talent too. Nico Lennon comes to mind, I was really impressed with how he did Carver, later I hear him as a different character in The Last Story.

And please, bring Ike Amadi back, the man is brilliant.

Apparently you don't even have to be an experienced voice actor. Or was Jessica Chobot just a rare exception to the rule?

Chris' statement says nothing about experience being a requirement for being used, but rather that the very experienced voice actors are very talented, and get used for a lot of things. As such, they are frequently used in a wide variety of titles.  Since this thread is about the proliferation of voice actors throughout games, I support this statement (see: Jennifer Hale).

Unless you're supposing that Jessica Chobot's voice has also been used in a wide variety of games (even a wide variety of BioWare games), it's actually not relevant to Chris' point.

I don't think that it is necessarily a closed group, I just think that it is people doing a job. Yea, BioWare is inclined to hire people that they already worked with simply because they know that person and how to work with them. However, at the end of the day it is still a job. I mean if you look at Jennifer Hale or Nolan North they not only do video game voice overs but TV and Movie voice overs.

Voice acting is a somewhat closed group. Voice actors are also SAG members, and any voice acting needs to adhere to the rules SAG sets forth for hiring. I was drafted to do voice work for a game I once worked on, but I was required to get a temporary SAG membership for permission to do it.

Just look up Steve Blum in IMDB. Between him and Jennifer Hale, there isn't much left for anyone else in the bussines. Pick a game that you liked, one of them probably did several voices in them. Hale was allready in 4 vdieo games this year and it's not even june yet, while Blum voiced God of war, warhammer AND Lego batman...

Fenris is also the faction leader for blood elves in World of Warcraft, so even MMORPGs are an option.
I do agree they're everywhere.

Normally I don't mind, because the voices themselves are great, but it reaches the point they become the victims of their own success - we find it difficult to know characters as they ARE because all we think of is the actor's other characters (or the actor themselves).

I laughed when I heard Gideon Emery as Lor'themar Theron because he sounded so bored.  And I couldn't figure out if it was because the banal script was boring the actor, or because Lor'themar was just so very sick of being surrounded by dull, ugly orcs the time.

My guess is banal script.

Even if overall plots are good, and environments are beautiful, and gameplay is engaging, written dialogue is... not.. a strong point.

That said, Lor'themar is supposed to be aloof, arrogant, and a little detached. I do like poking him repeatedly until he freaks out "DON'T touch the haaair!"

I got really really annoyed when I heard Jennifer Hale's voice in Bulletstorm. I don't even play Femshep, but her voice is just soooooo overused these days it's really annoying.

Unfortunately sometimes there is something like "too much of a good thing". Jennifer Hale is a superb voice actress, but she is in too darn much. Same goes for Nolan North. I'm usually fine with it when they use different distinct voices in different games, but when I hear FemShep in other games, or Nathan Drake in other games I just get tossed out of the moment. It's bound to happen since theyy are both sought after voice actors, but it really is a bit imersion-breaking none the less.

Thing is I can usually deal with Nolan North because his voice is good, but very 'generic'. Hale has a consistent 'tough' voice that's very distinct and thus even more annoying to hear in every game.

^ Yeah, I can agree with that. Nolan also has a way of changing the voice he is using, or rather the tempo, the "personality" etc. For example, while he is using almost the same voice in both Uncharted and Assassin's Creed there is still very much a certain distinctiveness between Nate Drake and Desmond Miles. Jennifer Hale usually does the tough military woman, but I know she can do alot of other voices. For example, her FemShep doesn't sound like her Bastila, or her Aayla Secura for that matter.

Yeah, Allers was too important a character to be give to Chobot. How else was I to get those extra assets?

Jennifer Hale is a powerpuff girl, an English Jedi and someone three steps away from incest. Her Femshep voice is not the only thing she can pull.

Five minutes into AC3 I was wondering what was going on with this guy that clearly wasn't on the cover of the boxart. Five minutes later, I stopped caring and was pulled into the game.
