@David,its based on how many times you talk to them and take them on missions. I don't take Liara on any missions and rarely talk to her, ME3 recognizes this in three different locations, but not in the DLC.

My experience was actually quite interesting with Liara. I romanced her in ME1 and then got together with Tali in ME2. Seeing how Liara was always a step behind and never able to reconnect with him in that way made for an interesting friendship.

I only take Javik on one mission, and that's really only to level up his skills since everyone else is at 60. I feel somewhat compelled to do that for some reason. As for conversations, I max them out every crewmember.

.  Javik has a few more conversations than most other charcaters.

You know, I don't like Joker. Why do they always force Joker on me? He's always on my ship. In all three games. He thinks he's god's gift or something. Then in ME2 there's this Jacob character. Why does he have to be there? Why can't I just throw him out the airlock? I liked him at one time, but then he cheated on me in ME3. Now I hate him and just want him gone in ME2. At least I can shoot the VS. Miranda lovers are just mad because we Liaramancers can let her die on Horizon, but the way she dies is just bad. Even I can't let her die to Kai Leng. I'd rather let her get crushed in ME2. It's more dignified. But Liara haters? No.... They can't even hate her with dignity.

Let's see other characters.... Ah yes.... Why can't I have the team I want? It's my ship. I want Zaeed, Javik, Liara, Xen, Grunt, Garrus, Jack. Why can't I recruit a cook and a janitor on the Citadel? Why can't I even have a fracking bottle of vodka in my quarters I can take a drink from? You know... Shepard's private stock. How about a few cases of cigarettes? My Shepard smokes like a chimney, but did they put any in the game? No. Why not? It's a "M" rated game. And why doesn't the ship have a still? What kind of ship is this? We're going to be at war for a while. The Alliance isn't going to miss the money. Who's going to care if we spend money on personal items? They'll just print more. We could all be dead tomorrow.

She's apparently a favorite of the BioWare team or part of the team. 

I don't like it honestly and I've never liked her or her species.  Always been suspicious of the Asari.

I don't mind most Asari, but I've never been a big fan of a lot of them. And Liara is a favorite of the writers. I'm not saying that in a bad way. It's the simple truth. I personally hold distaste for Liara, but she's just annoying. I don't out right completely hate her. In universe, my Shepard would like her to realize that it will never be, and that he doesn't hold the same feelings for her. They have a unique bond, but then again, isn't every bond unique?

So i'm playing Citadel, this time with Ashley locked in as my LI. So Brooks, Ashley, Wrex and I are at the apartment discussing what just happened. The subject of the silenced pistol was then brought up. But then, just as Shepard took out the pistol to show everyone, Liara literally appears from behind a column and says "let me see it!"

Like OMFG was she there the whole time? I didn't see her walk through the door. Was she in my apartment already, collecting my hairs and chewed bubblegum?

I'm telling you guys, Liara has a Shepard Shrine in a secret part of her room.
