The maker was probably inspired by the Abrahamic conception of god. I don't think we'll actually see the maker in any DA games, just references and speculation (which is a good thing) - much like the invisible Christian god everybody seems to worship

HOGWASH! The Maker is a myth, dreamt up by people who require a higher purpose, something outside of the world to blame about the trials and tribulations of their life.

Obviously, the Maker is David Gaider, who cloaks himself in the form of Sandal to watch over our characters whilst at camp.

So he is like Fizban in a way?

Its hard to explain
but Maker is good while Chantry is evil

Maker is powerful mage.Master of primal, creation, spirit, entropy and much more
With creation he has create everything
With primal he set world
With spirit he gave us connection to fade and him
With entropy he gave us fellings and end our lives

People, world and everything was created.People belive in him and pray to him.Best and most intelligence were awarded with magic so they can lead us.But lust for power has slowly poison hearts of those men and they became corrupted.Mages of Tevinter Imperium were no longer good lords. They became evil and start to enslave people, using their blood to fuel their hunger for more power. They wanted to rule over all that breath and live. They wanted to become gods. They use life force of many slaves to break into gold city. They were cast out, twisted and cursed by their own corruption.Maker has cursed them and they became the first darkspawn. All 7 tevinter archmages were now archdemons and all other tevinter mages were transformed into darkspawn.World was free.
After Tevinter fall free people cursed all mages and mages were unwelcome. They locked them in towers and create a special order of warriors to watch over them(Templars).Chantry(free people/tyrants) has began an agressive campaign against all those who posses magic gift. Those who refuse they called blood mages(People feared them) and kill them. Those who escaped from towers were apostates.Makes was furius. He awaken darkspawn and they awaken old gods. That was his punishment.

and after all that I think that Maker is mabari dog

The so-called "Maker" is actually a '71 Barracuda that pulls to the left and has half a rotting dog stuck in the grill. It also enjoys speeding through school crossings, running down little old ladies, and long cruises on the beach while Peaches & Herb drones on the 8-track.

Note to self: read the side effects warning on the cheap OTC antihistamines bottle *before* taking a handful of them.

Seriously, how can the Maker 'be' something. If a benevolent spirit, all-powerful mage, or Super-cute Nug appeared and claimed to be the Maker, the chantry could just go "No... you're not the Maker." and they would be 'right' in a sense, because if they didn't recognize that thing as the all-knowing Maker they know of then they would obviously be refering to something else. So it's really just a concept, and nothing will ever be able to claim that title.

I think it could be possible that the maker was indeed a mage. It was said that he was the original creator of the fade. However, a demon has said "there is no maker". I would think that if a demon who came from the fade said it, that it must be true.

Either way, the chantry does many good things and the teachings mean well.

If Alistair heard that, I bet he'd say something like "Right.  Because a demon would never lie."

Edit: Damn typos!

And where is your proof of a Maker when the Stone is all around us, visible to see? The Stone is where we sprang from and it is where we will end.

The Maker is David Gaider and his helpers at Bioware obviously. We know that even if the poor sods in-game can only speculate.

Actually, I had a few theories on this. Based on the power of Andraste's ashes, it makes the legends told more believable. Which does make it seem more likely that the Maker is the equivalent of what God is believed to be here.

OTOH, I remember reading some stuff - I think from the Dailish origin - about a trickster god of theirs that locked up the "evil" gods underground, etc. This trickster god was the only one left, and since some of the stuff these "histories" mentioned were similar to what the Maker has done, I was thinking maybe this trickster god was the Maker.

So who has heard the conversation at the ferry landing behind the mage "side quest" guy? It is a pair of NPC's talking on the other side of the fence about the "actual" creators...

That actually makes sense. Also, how could you explain the elf stories about their glory days? I seem more likely to believe the elven stories than the Chantry crap. :o

As the so-called 'Maker' has, and wants to have, nothing to do with Thedas it, to all intents and purposes, doesn't exist. I can't respect that in this world, and I don't respect it in that one, either.

Why cant all the supposed gods of Dragon Age coexist together? We already have magic that can break the laws of physics so why not? Gods could just be higher beings, like a giant is to an ant. And if this is so, wouldnt it be awsome to loot the corpse of the Maker, or Dwarvish Ancestors, or Elven Dieties after killing them thanks to your supirior combat prowess?
