I think it more likely that the Maker is just an immensely powerful Benevolent spirit of the Fade, maybe Faith?

If he were truly benevolent - assuming his existence- then he would manifest to help sentient beings and also he wouldn't have drawn his sight back...

About Andraste. I'll be avoiding spoilers, but somebody ingame mentions that something else may be the cause of her ashes healing power apparently.

Disclaimer: This post is made as a direct answer to the OP and without any knowledge of any of the other posts residing here in this multi- paged thread - thus the truth I bring to you may have already been set forth - if not it certainly should have been by now...

The game is the spiritual successor to the BG series - everyone knows that - so it stands to reason that the Maker is of course a Giant Miniature Space Hamster - how could it be anything else...Image IPB

I think it could be possible that the maker was indeed a mage. It was said that he was the original creator of the fade. However, a demon has said "there is no maker". I would think that if a demon who came from the fade said it, that it must be true.

Either way, the chantry does many good things and the teachings mean well.

Of course the demon might not be telling the truth.....they have been known not to.

The whole point of the maker in Dragon age is that there is no proof he/she/it exists. Andrasti however (think I spelt that right) could have been a Mage.

What is the maker is even harder to answer than does the maker exist and neither question has a definative answer, and that is how Bioware should ensure it remains IMO.

The maker is quite obviously just a powerful and intelligent demon that once thought he should build himself a pretty home in the Fade. Once the Tevinter mages reached his city they found out about his existence and the demon wanted to eliminate them since, in his mind, they were a pestillence.
Now the means by which they were able to reach the Golden City was that they made up a special serum. After a long time of trying and failing they were finally able to craft one that allowed them to manipulate the energy in the Fade in a specific way. Sadly, this serum was some kind of poison that slowly started to devour them from inside, resulting in death.
The poor souls that were forced to bury their bodies got poisoned blood on their hands, and since they werent too caught up in the "wash my hands often" -idea, this poison got mixed with bacterias and viruses that soon evolved into a horrible disease!
The corpses nutured the earth and seeped into an underground river that sprung out in the Deep Roads, Dwarves got it, and mixed with lyrium and deepstalker poop, it evolved into a plague, and Dwarves had to start sealing off thaigs to controll it.
Eventually the mages from tevinter that had gotten trapped in the fade killed the demon, and the city lost all its splendor when the demon was not there to fuel it anymore.
Searching to return to their earthly bodies, they had to follow the cord of the poison they had used. Unfortunately they had no idea how long it had been since they usurped the Golden City as they had quite much fun in the fade. Naturally they tracked it to where it was strongest - not knowing what they had unleashed, and this was in the deep roads thaigs. Possessing the bodies of dead dwarves, they were horrified at what met them, and with no other option they started searching for a cure. Now the dwarves traded some with the surface so there was much ingrediences to plow through, and more than enough test-subjects. Now they cured the plague, but the cured dwarves were forever changed. Little did they know their cure had just created the very first darkspawn...
Oh, and Andraste were just a powerful mage.

say there is a maker, then where is he?

the ancient gods are locked up underground, they are there physically, what about the maker? is he just some spirit of something?

perhaps the maker is also locked up underground, and that is the reason that the dwarfs beleive they return to the stone, same way humans and elves beleive they return to the maker.

The Maker is the supposed God of the world of Dragon AgeImage IPB.  However, is it not possible to be a sort of powerful mageImage IPB that has prolonged his life through rituals unknown.  Think of it like the Emperor of Mankind (Warhammer 40kImage IPB).  But what do you think?
Please write your opinion and why you think said opinion.

I like the idea of this thread but honestly I think little of The Maker. Religion always seems to start hate for others, dependency on something higher than us, the fear of punishment or eternal damnation. I think if there is a maker we couldn't even fathom the kind of being he would be b/c we are too young & closed minded.
I do not really acknolwedge him sicne he is a moody child(or so it seems) that turns his back on his creation(us) that he failed to guide. The story is old. lol. I don't mean to be such a downer but I think all that matters is your moral choices. As I said if The Maker does exist I doubt we could even comprhend such a powerful entity.

Good post though, I'm sure they'll be a lot of very interesting responses! :)

Within DA lore belief exists and as faith is reuired then to a lrge number of the people in that world the maker is real.

TheChantry I believe has corrupted his/her message as like in RL tends to happen and although they do good works they are also control freaks albit as part of the Trevinter Imperium experience.

Most of the codex is confusing or conflicting, which is good as no definate answers there so faith is required as with any real religion but amongst the lore qwe see hints of the old gods, perhaps an unkown 8th or indeed the trickster god of the Dalish.

Andrastes followers belive and the ghost in the gauntlet tells you the naker sent drought and floods to the Tevinter Imperium.

Perhaps faith powers gods if so this could explain why he needs his chant spreading to the 4 corners of the world before he/she returns. Perhaps the maker is trapped in the black city or as one poster suggested the myth comes from a Fade spirit the the mages destroyed and so the golden city blackened with no one to power the energies of the fade although I think Andastrie was before the blight so it may link the two together.

Still lots to ponder on this.

That would be Ironic if true... man is killing the very thing they are trying to serve muwahahaha

Personally only humans believe in him, every other race has their own belief system in place. Just another hand me down superstition from primitive goat herders.  I'll go with the Black City has always been black, never golden... but more of  Fade prison. Lirium is the only god, ask the ashes.

Maybe the maker is actually an extremley powerful pride demon who was going to enslave all humanity so the mages cast a powerful spell to imprison him in the black city. Just before he died he changed the mages into darkspawn for their punishment. But this spell was so powerful they had to rely on the assistance of the old gods and their lives are the only thing keeping him imprisoned there. The maker planted in the darkspawns mind the desire to corrupt the old gods, because he knew that the humans would never willingly kill them without a cause.

Because the mages were transformed into darkspawn people started to belive that the maker had be wronged and this is how the myth of the golden city started and people started to worship the maker. This religion might have started in a small cult form trying to bring back this demon to wreak havok upon the earth and themselves be like demigods under him. This is why the old gods are hated by the people who worship the maker and anyone who worship them called balsphempers, because their lives are the only thing keeping th maker from returning.

These discussions about the Maker and Chantry can be fun and interesting when they pop up, but I wouldn't hold my breath for any of this information to be revealed any time soon.

The writers deliberately designed the human religion of the game to be based on faith -- this is very unlike, say, the Baldur's Gate series, where the gods were real entities and had an actual affect in everyday affairs (e.g. cleric spells).  The argument over the existance of gods was not debatable in the Forgotten Realms, and hence the concept of "faith" was nonexistant.

To reveal the true nature of the Maker would take away the faith concept.  IMO, having some of these unanswerable ultimate questions in a fantasy game setting is like a breath of fresh air, and I applaud Bioware for choosing this design principle (even though it may ruffle a few feathers, considering the parallels with real-world religions).

So I suspect (and hope) that we will not be meeting the Maker or disproving his existance in the near future, if at all.

P.S., I still think the Maker is Gaider disguised as Sandal...

I believe the DA:O is a real entity in the DA world.

I believe that the Chantry is a warped version of the truth of Andraste (who I also think is Flemeth).

And I believe that evil in DA:O is completely created by man(elven/dwarven)kind.

The honest truth of it all my guess lies with the Wardens. Even Alistair himself says it. "Do you want the chantry version or the truth?" You-"The Truth." Alistair-"The truth is we dont know where they came from, what they are or what their motivation is. All we know is that they come from the ground and thats as far as we have gotten."

So my guess is the chantry like every other religion is blowing thing way out of proportion and come up with ludicrous reasons as to why things happen.
