Discuss.

Depends on how good it was. And if the now-stupid Reapers are involved.

Why call it "Mass Effect" then?

If it's going to be "ME4", then I want turian, krogan, salarian, asari and all the universe.

Then it wouldn't be Mass Effect now would it?

Depends on all the other factors, like plot, premise, character, gameplay etc.

Yeah, I don't see why it would be ME at all then... No humans, asari, Korgan.

I'm never oppose to a new sci fi game, but it would have almost no resemblance to ME

There are other thread's discussing this that have managed to put together a convincing narrative for how a human could be made to arrive in another galaxy. The concept being a journey home/fish out of water story, that has the potential to link two galaxies together.

I don't see a problem with it being set in another galaxy. But that's conditional on there being another ME game after ME4 to carry that story along.

Despite ME3's controversy, I did enjoy the serialised nature of the games as individual installment's of the same arc. Made better than anything else out there by the virtue of the game's history being unique to my character.

It's a good system. BW have a keeper there.

If it's not in the galaxy we know, with the Turian Hegemony, Asari Republics, Systems Alliance and all then it isn't Mass Effect. I have no problem with new sci-fi IPs to compete for the action-RPG market but keep Mass Effect Mass Effect.

Personally I would just wonder why they didn't just make a new IP for this.  Brand recognition I suppose.  But honestly, if they were to take all the energy to build a bunch of new lore, I'd prefer something besides space opera and epic fantasy.  DA and ME do just fine for those already I think.

When you say galaxy, do you simply mean new protagnists, races, plot, conflicts, or do you actually mean a literally new galaxy like the andromeda galaxy?

Traveling to a new galaxy is a cool concept but it wouldn't be Mass Effect anymore. Not without the Mass Relays. Not without the species that make it unique.

I guess I wouldn't be okay with a game that starts and finishes in an entirely new galaxy. But I would be all for a game that has us assembling a crew of Asari, Turians, Salarian, Krogan etc and then going on an expedition out of the Milky Way, through Dark Space and then reaching a new galaxy.

Personally, I hope they keep it in the Milky Way. I'm excited to see the Mass Effect universe built from the ground up on a new engine in a new console generation. I'm interested to see where we go from here. New protagonist. New cast of characters. It's time for a new adventure in the galaxy we love. These are exciting times. I can't help looking to the future with much anticipation.

Agree with this. Seems pretty pointless.

They... might as well make a new game, if everything will change... I mean, what are the chances of there being humans on another galaxy? Or Turians? Or Asari? Or the other races we know and love (or hate)?

It's going to have to if we want the next mass effect to avoid BioWare's synthesis canon ending.

It wouldn't even be worth playing then, or calling Mass Effect.

That's like playing a Star Wars game that's located on Earth.

- New "universe", either literally or in the far-off future.
- Same combat.
- Same narrative and conversation structure (as ME1, preferably).
- Fresh start with the races (either new ones or the old ones in new context).
- Smaller conflicts.
- No Reapers.
- New protagonist.

That sounds pretty appealing to me.

If you want new species and planets you can easily accomplish this in our own galaxy, since only about 1 % of it has been explored by the current known civilizations.

In my opinion not good idea. Mass Effect is focused on Milky Way, making new galaxy would be good to new game not related to ME or based on some ideas from ME. Additionally, making a diffrent galaxy could be too problematic, too expensive to create or both.

But is it even worth calling Mass Effect anymore?

You have the existing universe, and then you scrub it or change the location to a setting completely different.

There's nothing in that at all for Mass Effect. It might as well be a new IP.

what does "IP" stand for in that context?

I can see the point of not being able to link up with MEU, IF it's not 'in' the ME3+ story lines.

I often set and try to imagine the 'next' universe related to the current mass effect. But then the mass effect idea is rather muted in the current game. I've yet to have anyone actually state what "mass effect" actually stands for story wise.

For me, it would be. Mass Effect: The Next Generation. Different captain, different crew, some of the same races, some new races, different conflicts, same flavor.

If the BioWare crew were assured to be back on solid storytelling ground, I'd say sign me up.

I dunno, I cannot seem to meta game the next mass effect. Stuff pops up for me, then falls away, as story lines gather. What could be so very important in the next, er, well... new systems?
