I had been kicking this idea back and forth with a friend for a while, and decided to try and lay the bones of it out here for your purusal.

Keep in mind this isn't a fleshed out plot, more of a sense of how the game mechanics might work and a general sense of theme/tone.

My idea is a Mass Effect universe search and rescue RPG. The protagonist is a search and rescue specialist, ideally of non-specified humanoid citadel race (I figure Hanar or Elcor would still be a little difficult to deploy in an action game)

The timeline would be set during the early hours of the Reaper invasion proper in ME3. Caught off-guard like everyone else, the protagonist is initially illequipped for the tasks laid before them.

The gameplay would be a lot more exploration based than previous ME games, with the protagonist entering hostile and hazardous environments like fires, collapsing buildings etc. Dealing with traversing rubble while searching, both with basic organic senses and later with increasingly advanced scanners and drones to find survivors, triage first aid and establish a safe route for extraction.

I don't envision this as a shooter so much, so it won't appeal to all ME players, but with ideally more physical interaction with the environment (the likes of which we only see Sheperd do in cut scenes).

I figure there would be a squad building element with character development and interaction such as we expect from Bioware, and a revisiting of vehicular missions, featuring a rescue vehicle that I envision as a hybrid of the Mako and Hammerhead (Mako stability on the ground, Hammerhead agility in the air/jumping) with the canon replaced with a multipurpose chemical spray unit that could be used for anything from putting out fires to erecting an emergency concrete wall/support. Basically the vehicle is a big omnitool.

I know from a marketing perspective, a non-shooter sci-fi game is a hard sell, but done right, this focus on rescue and recovery could be an interesting take on the ME universe. Their could be plenty of scope for drama too, dealing with issues like survivor guilt and the hero complex (ie "you can't save everyone").
