I must really suck, because I can't beat the Archdemon on Casual.

(I'm playing the PS3 version)
My party is level 18, consisting of me as a damage mage(Arcane Warrior), Wynn as healer, Leliana as an archer/ranger, and Alistar as sword&board tank(champion/templar).

Seems like no matter what I do the endless adds after the initial skirmish with the archdemon eventually wear me down.

This is on Casual difficulty too. I must really suck or be doing something very wrong.

Are you using the ballistas positioned around the roof?  Also, are you using your armies?

After he flies off, run up the the rampart that overlooks the Archdemon. Darkspawn don't go there. You should have a very easy time of it with your group if you do that. You don't really need the ballistas with your group, but there is one up there if you want to use it.

If you don't know what I'm talking about, follow the link in my signature. Hope that helps.

Your self awareness does you credit. Sorry, just kidding.  I just love some of those lines in the game.

Anyway, I found it easier than some of the other boss fights, I didn't even bother to use any of the troops. Also, I was playing on Normal. But I was 23rd or 24th level at the time, and that probably makes a big difference. My crew was my dex DW Rogue PC (assassin/duelist), Alistair (same as yours), Shale (using the defensive tank line, whatever it's called), and Morrigan.

I didn't use any special tactics, just focused everyone on the Archdemon when it was on the ground, and went after the rest of the darkspawn whever the Archdemon took off, before going after the Archdemon again.

The funniest thing is that at the end my rogue switched to a bow and killed it at a distance, but the cut scene had me run and there and use my daggers.

Sorry I can't really help.

Do what Soteria said - and also call in your armies. Mages and elves (assuming you have them) are especially good against the Archdemon. The other armies do better against the darkspawn. Which you call depends on what you're having most trouble with.

I was level 24 when I got there on the one character who has finished the game, so yes, I imagine level would have an impact. I had to do it 4 times because of a bugged ending though, lol.

Did you find the sweet spot yet. Are you calling on your allies to come and help you.

Summon one of the armies (preferably something that can take a bit of dmg from the archdemon and be numerous and quick enough to kill the weak minions that spawn later). Send somebody to balistas and spam bolts at him.

All in all the fight is a little too easy for a final boss with the allies and the balistas.

With the mages (I gave them quite some runes so maybe that made them more powerfull, gave them all novice and journeymen runes I found in the entire game since I'd been saving them till late in the game and found they wheren needed anymore then) I found it very easy on difficult, certainly after I started using on person next to a ballista, very fast firing and good damage.

As someone else noted; use the baliistas once the archdemon flies off and lands on the other platform. Those things take its health down by  fair amount per hit.

I think there's harder fights in the game, such as Broodmother depending on what level you're at when you get there. Also the sloth demon in the fade of the circles mage is a pain as he resurrects like 4 or 5 times.

If you're being swamped by the darkspawn adds, call in either golems, werewolves, templars or dwarves (my preference is dwarves if you have the legion of the dead with them). Otherwise, if the problem is the big bad herself, call in the elves or the mages (my preference being the elves). The Redcliffe boys are relatively weak unbuffed, so unless you contributed to their chest, leave them for the last gasp.

The advice here is pretty solid. I think your main obstacle is that 18 is pretty low level to fight the Archdemon. On my crappiest playthrough, I was 20. If you don't mind replaying a bit of the game, revert to a prior save, buy like 20 stacks of 99 Elfroot from the Dalish camp and donate it for XP to the elven emissary in your camp.

I have fewer problems with this fight than a some of the other ones....I don't even bother to try to melee it. I use the elf army, the balistas, and my party all ranged attacking. Works very well for me.

Funny enough, I had no trouble at all with either of those fights. I even managed to kill the Flemeth Dragon without any problems(though that fight was just nervewracking enough to be fun).

I am getting torn down ever so slowly by the waves of Darkspawn. I didn't know about the balistas though, and I had the Elves with me, all 50 of them, though I didn't actually see them anywhere, even though their little icon was up in the upper right hand corner of the screen.

You should've seen them, at least I do when I call them. All those elven bowmen at my side.

Edit: Unless that's a platform difference?

I guess its about people's styles. Thing is all the battles are winnable with varying strategies.

Have you got a specialist healer in the group duing the the final battle? I find if you take Wynne and let her stand back from your meelee group she can keep everyone alive so they keep chopping at the archdemon. Just make sure you heal individuals before their health drops below 50% becauase if you leave it too late there can be delay in getting the spell off.

Also sounds like you are getting distracted by the drakspawn that show up during the battle. Your reinforcements should be able to swamp them so you can concentrate on the dragon.

Anyways, That's what i've heard on the road, take it for what it is :-)

Im in the same boat as you. I thought casual was the easy setting, game plays just as hard as when I when I had it set to normal. The group allies are useless, the Archdemon quickly gets rid of my Gnoems, then I called out my Dwarven army they came out and did some good effort but once the Archdemon called out the army of Darkspawn, my Dwarven guys just disappear. No they didn't die, I have 25 count of them shown on the icon indicator but not a single Dwarven in sight, just a large group of Darkspawn in every corner, wearing my team all down till we're all dead.

I play melee, so it's me, Alistair, Leliana and Wynne.

and I'm at level 20.

Also could it have killed Bioware to make it so that savant Enchantment boy to also carry Elk root.  It's like only the Camp and that forest town are the only places that sold x99 Elks.

I miss the days of gaming when I can say "F" this and punch in a cheat code for God mode.  :(

If you keep your distance to the archdemon (don't have anyone melee fight him) he will settle for spitting spirit clouds at you. The enchantment boy sells Greater Spirit Balms. Also the Market District General dropped a helmet called Corruption that will max out your spirit resistance. If you have say Alistair use it he won't need any balms (more for the rest of you).

I cheese it by spamming ballista and summoning Redcliffe knights to distract the darkspawn

why ballista? any auto attack from range will do way more damage. especially with 3 ranged.

my guess, you put attribute points in con and willpower. severely crippling your team.
