There's the problem, do I go with a Vita, because it has Persona 4: Golden, but little else, or do I go with a 3DS because it has Devil Survivor, Soul Hackers, and SMT IV? Rationally the 3DS seems to have more games that I would enjoy, and ones that I have not played. But Persona 4's an amazing game, and it's really hard to resist that...

I adore P4, but I find it hard to justify spending that much money for a handful of games (P4, Disgaea 3) that I already own.

As for SMT IV, and the series as a whole, I've been a fan since Persona 2:EP, and Nocturne made me really take notice. Digital Devil Saga sealed the deal for me. If IV is as good as Nocturne was, with the exposure that the series has been getting here in the West, then we'll be talking about this game for a very long time.

I want a Vita for P4G as well. I saw a few trailers and it has some additional gameplay and story elements from the PS2 counterpart I have.

I only just got into the series when I bought Persona 4 and SMT III a few months ago. Two distinct, but equally awesome games. I haven't finished SMT III yet though. I plan on doing that after I play through number IV. One of these days I'll buy a PlayStation memory card and try to get Persona 2: EP.

Persona 2:EP has the problem of being the second half of a set of games that never got the first half. Until P2: Innocent Sin got released for the PSP it was never officially localized. It's rather frustrating, but I'm glad that it can be officially played now, and even though P3/4 are not direct sequels there are some shout outs, and some call backs to the previous games. Persona 4 got a lot of people into the series, and I think it's a great thing, because the games are fantastic.

SMT III (Nocturne for anyone reading who isn't familiar with the series and doesn't know what we're talking about) is an astounding game. I wish you luck with it, because I rage quit a couple times over the course of that game =p

Great thread by the way! One word of caution though, until recently Atlus games had a tendency to be very rare, so a copy of P2 is going to be very expensive. I got very lucky with a used copy with a cracked case for $12, but even in that poor condition nowadays it's still worth close to $125 U.S.

You're really making want to pick up a 3DS for SMT IV....

Glad you like the thread.

Yeah it's unfortunate that Innocent Sin was never localized for North America for the PlayStation. I'm tempted to get a PSP to play that but I may just youtube a playthrough.

I've heard the stories about SMT III's difficulty but I feel I'm ready to bare those scars. I'm past them now but I still remember how annoying the fight with Matador and Thor in the Mantra headquarters was.

I just checked Amazon and at first glance Eternal Punishment is definitely up there in price ($299) for a new copy. I don't mind acquiring a cheaper used copy though. I saw some reasonably priced used copies.

Tempted to nab SMTIII one of these days but I'm also thinking if I should get into the series with SMT4. I've been hyped up on this game because of the general demon-summoning/catching but as a general question, what exactly is the premise/theme of SMT? Persona's is the idea of self, consciousness and all that Jungian mumbo jumbo (at least in 4). How does it contrast with the other series?

The original Megami Tensei for the NES/Famicon were based on novels, and the series proper started with SMT on the SNES. The themes are usually choice. The original 3 were Chaos, Order, and Freedom. Usually represented by a deity or being of immense power/mythical significance. SMT III expanded upon those and added some other ideas, and more factions (without spoiling too much you don't choose one of those 3, but some of the different factions represent similar ideals).

Persona obviously deals with Psychology as you said, 1/2 were more Freudian, whereas 3/4 were more Jungian, in addition to the tarot motif.

The core SMT franchise has usually about creating or choosing an ideology post-apocalypse. The world goes to Hell literally, and you have to either choose to follow the path of Law, Chaos, or neutrality. The Persona games were originally created as a sub-series that would be more geared towards the general public, whereas the core series is usually darker, and harsher in terms of how it looks at the world.

tl:dr - Persona focuses on psychology and human interaction and self-reflection, whereas the main series usually deals with Law (usually God) versus Chaos (Usually Satan) versus objecting to both the extremes.

That's simlifying it, and Digital Devil Saga, and the Devil Summoner series kind of took over the role of general public RPG while Persona became massive critical and comercial juggernaut since SMT III: Nocturne came out.

Edit: Also it's not a clear good versus evil versus apathetic kind of game. All sides usually are portrayed as having valid arguments, but also taking their ideaology too far,

Persona 4 is a port. You own it and as great of a game it is and its even better on the vita. It's not worth missing out on Shin Megami Tensei IV, Soul Hackers and the Devil Survivor games though. Atlus also has been really supporting Nintendo with other franchises like Etrian Odyssey and come on this is a main line SMT game. I like Persona but this is Atlus's baby.

The 3DS is also fully backwards compatible so you can even play Shin Megam Tensei: Strange Journey and get the Devil Survivor games on the cheap. The first one has been ported to the 3DS with full voice acting and more content and the second one will be too.

Since I got killed by Nyx twice (stupid Death Arcana) I figured I'd dabble in some of SMT IV before I tackled it for good and then really start on playing SMT IV. It took a minute to get into the swing of things, I got wiped out three times fairly quickly since I wasn't careful and didn't have a full party. I wish the death scene wasn't so obnoxiously long. That's my only complaint about the game so far.

Is this game worth sixty euro? I've an american 3DS and I live in Ireland so the only way I can buy games is off amazon where I've to pay import fees and shipping and all that so the games come out crazy expensive. This region lock thing sucks.

I've barely played it so I'll just direct you to some nice impressions videos, they're kind of long but he does a nice job of explaining what he likes and dislikes about the game: Part 1, Part 2, Part 3. You should be able to determine whether the game is worth the money from those videos.

As long as the eshop and your club nintendo account are properly connected before you download them the games register automatically. I downloaded Fire Emblem Awakening before doing that so I had to email Nintendo so they could register it for me.

So they don't accept credit cards from the EU yet they still decided to charge me for each time I tried to put it in. So I'm out $400. I swear, if this thing doesn't refund...

You good Sir/Madame/Other make a very persuasive argument, and I do believe I shall take this advice.

Picked this up tonight with a 3DS XL. I went to grab Devil Survivor: Overclocked as well, but apparently a young woman got there shortly before me and bought the last copy. The box and goodies that come with the game are amazing, and I'm about to begin playing.

Also to the young lady that beat me to the punch, you are awesome!

I've been going slow and steady with the game since I've been switching between it and Persona 3 but it's a good game so far. The beginning really is unlike a Shin Megami Tensei game. It almost seems like a fantasy RPG because of the architecture of the game world so far.

The very opening a lot like the original Shin Megami Tensei, which I know many haven't played (myself included more or less), but it starts in very much the same way. At the same time though you're absolutely correct in seeing the older architecture makes everything seem like Dynasty Warriors or something. It's kind of a cool mix of old opening, in a new and jarring setting.

I have only one complaint so far, and that's the new fusion system. It's not that it's bad, but I want an option to use the classic system. I do hope there's an option for that, because this new system is going to make setting up specific fusions down the line near-impossible. I've been using the same system for so long that this new one just feels alien to me...

Yeah I'm not a fan of the way fusion works in this game either. I do like the new things it brings to the table but it should definitely be an addition to the older system, not a replacement.

Somebody. I don't know who but I heard they're out there in the universe somewhere. I stopped caring about SMT IV a while ago after dealing with how stupid Tokyo is to navigate. Although I've been thinking of picking it back up recently for some reason
