You beat me to the punch mate.

Now they are comparing Oblivion to Fallout3. Done by the same people, have the same game engine but a different game and player and posters comparing it like its the same game series which is  not.

Finally got my hands on the game yesterday, and my initial session with it lasted 11 hours. 11 hours! This game just sucked me in completely, from the opening moments, and just didn't let up.

As someone who played through the first game a good 14 times, I pretty much can't think of anything I've seen that is a change from the first game, that I haven't felt was a change for the better[1]. ME wanted to be a tac-shooter/RPG hybrid, but never quite got there, but ME2 nails it totally.

([1] Yes, that's right, I think the addition of thermal-clips works well for the gameplay, that dumping the old inventory was a bold but effective move, and that the rejigged health/armour/shields stuff neatly augments the tactical nature of the combat.)

Frenetic, exciting combat, great-looking locales, fascinating characters, weighty choices... Oh yeah, and the dialogue aspects are nicely refined. I always though the dialogue-wheel thing worked really well, but the 'interrupts' often turn out to be pretty cool, and just the staging and presentation of scenes is altogether more dynamic.

And from a technical perspective, ME2 just spanks the first game silly. I don't recall seeing any texture pop, or framerate drops, the game never froze (due to troubles streaming content in), and the loading-screen don't seem to be too long (I installed to HDD, to be clear).

The changes from ME to ME2 do not undermine those aspects that are important to me as a player of RPGs, though some fans of the first game are clearly feeling that its no longer the franchise for them. Personally, I hold ME2 to be vastly superior to the first game, and I'm glad Bioware was bold enough to make the changes they made.

This game is going to keep me going and going and going.

Mass Effect 2 strikes me as being a different game from ME 1. It's more like a TPS with interactive fiction elements rather than a stat-RPG with shooter elements. It's a different beast, that's for sure.

That said, while I missed the old inventory system of ME1, it always struck me as being somewhat jarring that the special forces agents employed by the rulers of all Citadel space had to personally purchase their own firearms with their own cash. And you had to source your arms, too. If there's only 1 Spectre X Sniper rifle, you gotta choose who had it.

This system where Cerberus directly funds your monies and then essentially replicates whatever's the best tech you can discover or unearth - it feels more authentic to the sci-fi sphere of fiction. After all, we never see Han Solo or Commander Riker trawling the ports for better weapons.

The thing that kind of dissociates more from that ideal is the implementation of the Thermal Clip system. I don't like having to pick up all manner of trash after every single fight. Really. I don't object to the concept - just the implementation. You could, for instance, say that the more advanced weapons have very large heat capacities and sinks. They still vent heat, but there's so much heat to vent that it doesn't happen within firefights - you have to use stored Clips and pick up Clips to quickly vent heat. But after? I just want that gone. When the firefight's over, I want all ammo maxxed out, every time, without having to go around to pick up crap. That's what happens, anyway, but it's just more tedious the way it's set-up now.

10/10 is not a perfect score. It's just an indication that their scoring system isn't flexible enough. Also, games can be perfect, just not objectively. I have played many perfect games. They were perfect for me.

100% tells me there is no way the game could have been improved. Each weapon is perfectly balanced, there are no continuity errors in the story, no technical glitches or flaws.

Agree with what you just said. If that rating system is a percentage scale, then no game should be 100%. But if the rating system is a score out of 10, 10 means the score is somewhere between 90 and 99%.

Scale doesn't really matter. It could be 2/2, 5/5, 10/10, or 84/84. Those are all 100% perfect scores. The granularity of the scale is less important than the reviewer's perception that nothing could be improved. Just my opinion.

I agree. :o

my review for Slovak game portal Hrajmobil.sk - hrajmobil.sk/sk/pc/mass-effect-2

rating 9/10

pros:
easy to play, very addictive
great game world to explore
various and unique team members + interaction with them
great amount of details and new information within ME universe

cons:
biotics degradation
easy action "cover and shoot" style - abilities arent that important now
main story line is weak and shallow

My rating: 9.5/ 10

Pros:
Awesome Combat
Amazing Armor customization
Nice class abilities
Great Cast
Team Interaction is nice
Amazing Detail. LOVE the new armor details
Addictive Game
Thank you bioware. The scarring system is awsome. I might be the only one that likes it but its badass.

Cons:
Story could use a little more depth
Loading screens..I miss the elevators. Those put a little scale into the game.
bugs here and there
Lack of UNC missions. There are a few but I really do miss the large amount that ME1 had.

Ideas:
Let conrad verner be a team mate in ME3 with a Garunteed awesome death cutscene or make him be an end
boss. Hes and annoying fanboy i wouldnt mind toying with a little more.
Why does it always show my text as double spaced?

Gamereactor Finland gives ME2 10/10 Gamereactor

Good: storytelling, soundtrack, characters, intensive and diverse battles
Bad: long load times

The guy was really amazed by the graphics and he really goes on and on about how awesome the game looks, and yet he gives the graphics a 9. That's the only odd thing about the review that I noticed.

The Graphics are good, the sound is good except for when one of your party members yells out "All is clear" when you holster your gun. Damn nearly crapped my pants.

The reviewer obviously did not play the first one or he would not have given such a high score.

And you must have never played a video game before if you think ME2 is only a 5 out of 10.

You obviosuly did not play the first one and are probably one of these chaps who says "I like the new Gears of War style to the Mass effect universe". The choice to customize your inventory and to upgrade your weapons and armour as you see fit (dogma for all RPG games)  is why I took 5 points off of the review. I gave it 5 for the graphics and the story.

I dont see whats wrong with customizing your weapons. Hell id be happy if they made it more like army of two with the weapons. What more do you want from the story for god to be the creator of the reapers i mean seriosly wtf do you want? Graphics worked just fine for me i didnt expect it to be the best in graphics so i dont mind. I do get angry when im running along some hill side and randomly start climbing up in mid air alot of bugs like that. The first one need to clean up the inventory alot in my opinion. The planet scanning yea...lets just get rid of that.and i would not like the retturn of exploring every dam empty planet.they need some that better than the latter and less tedious.I love the story and the dialouge choices.the fighting is good but the option to maybe purchase armor and have that be your second line of defense before health(like the enemies) would be nice and a repair function(you pay for of course).theres many functions id like to have but theres many things not in the game which make me glad they are not. I do  wish you had more main story line missions (maybe a badass visit to take out all the geth on Tali's planet? would love that) Im curious to see how you can continue from a save file onto ME3 if you die...maybe a lost child shepard had from a one night stand? or for the females a genetic twin like miranda or a child she had but had to give away from not being able to raise it? anywho I shall wait in patience for the final part to our trilogy. Id give this game a 9/10 this is coming from a a true gamer from D&D( miss 3.0 T_T) to Halo to DAO Ive played every premo game from the last 13 years and see no reason to **** besides a few bugs and more weapons (and maybe the option to get married in the 3rd XP). Id also advise bioware to just make every crewmate(exepct legion XD) a love intrest for both male and female becuase im sick of the ****ing of " omg i miss my Female on female" this game is about the galaxy not "Mass orgy" jesus -_-.

I've have KOTOR, DAO, ME1, and I still think that ME2 is better, may not  be as strong in the rpg department as ME1, but its still definitely there, the skills are bascially the same, ME1 skills had 4 ranks when useless points in between those ranks, ME2 skills have 4 ranks plus each skill branchs off in two ways one maxed.

ME2 > ME1

ME2 > KOTOR

DAO > ME2

Funny that I was really looking forward to item hunting in ME2. The streamlined upgrade system works but it doesn't really add to the overall flavor of the thing for some reason. I really enjoy the inventory lore of the first game. It works gameplay-wise however.

Story was great. Very fast-paced. Problem is you really can't relax between missions. I sort of miss the MAKO over the expanse of an environment. I was really only irritated by driving it through rocky terrain. I find planet scanning very impersonal.

I really like the improved combat system and how they make you think about who to bring with you on a mission. The feel is better than the first when it comes to power use. The ammo system and the varying weapons make you feel switching is really an option depending on certain conditions.

Hacking minigames are really good. The bigger Normandy is more enjoyable. Wish you had more doodads than the garbage bin to toy around with. Everything else seems to be seamless in implementation.

Is it just me or did the first game just feel bigger in scope in some way? I really felt the lack of worthy side quests a minus.

Dear Bioware,

I understand that your considerations for game development revolve around the actual business of making games, i.e., you want your game to appeal to the broadest market available. Mission accomplished. Mass Effect 2 has clearly 'wowed' and amazed alot of us, and Bioware/EA are going to reap a windfall on it.

However, I would ask that for just a moment you consider that in so doing, you have removed alot of the magic of the first game. I speak of course only for myself, and would like to humbly voice my opinion in the hopes that you would take into consideration the following when making Mass Effect 3:

1. Please bring back some form of planet exploration. Driving over scenic vistas on alien worlds with gorgeous skies was half of the magic of the original game for me. I'll never forget when I looked up from luna and saw the earth looming above the horizon.

2. Please create more options to customize the appearance/loadout of your party, choices in the story, importance of the sidequests, etc. etc. Pretty self-explanatory, I feel like there is a severe lack in the depth of customization here, and without serious customization, it feels like just another shooter (to me). All through Mass Effect 2, I was very aware that I was playing a 'game'. Painfully so. The illusion of taking part in a galactic epic quest was just gone.

That's it!! You've made a lovely game, really! And you deserve the immense amounts of money you are going to recieve. I am only asking, because the inclusion of these are the things that made your original game one of my favorites of all time, and I am really disappointed they were left out.

So, if you could, please reconsider including them for the third game in this series.

Thank you, and keep up the great work.

To the rest of the forum: I am well aware that I am a vocal minority. I am well aware that a great deal of you are just happy with the game as-is. That's great!! I honestly think Bioware deserves more recognition for the first game, if nothing else, so better late than never. However, I think we can rationally and reasonably agree to disagree and be respectful to one another in doing so.

My review: 7/10.

No spoilers allowed, so I'm not going to name specifics here.

These are my opinions, you're entitled to yours

First the negatives.
Not happy with:
  • Amount of weapons and armour
  • Shooter instead of statistics driven RPG (but it's a great shooter)
  • Scanner/probing mini game
  • Hacking/Bypass mini game
  • No inventory and the "replicating" strangeness
The shooter/RPG thing needs explanation, I feel. I like role playing games, and this is an action RPG. And I expected it to be more action than RPG this time around. However I didn't expect the statistics element to be so reduced in ME2. Feels strange to go from an Action RPG to an allmost pure Action game, especially since it's from Bioware. I can understand the call, though. It's supposed to be a darker and more violent game. And that's great! I love it. The harder tone really struck home with me. BUT I feel that it could've been done without sacrificing the stats from ME1.

And it's been said before, I'm sure, but the scanning and probing mini game is awful. I don't feel like it's well done, it doesn't feel that well thought out and it's boring. I thought it was a neat change from the annoying planet exploration from ME1, but now that I've finished the game I've got to say that it's equally bad. It's not better. It's not worse. It's the same. Boring, tedious work - in a game that should be about having fun.

Also, the inventory is gone, replaced with a replicating nonsense-technology, that really feels more like a spur of the moment solution to the awful inventory system from ME1. For me it removes something fun. Managing and comparing your equipment is a strategic option for me, and I don't want it gone. I want it improved upon.

Before I derail I want to get over to the good stuff.
I love this game. No mistake. It's a great action game. A fantastic shooter with the best written and executed story since ... well. I can't really say that I think any action game has had a good story before. So kudos, Bioware's writers!
The character portraits are fantastic. I felt more for Jack than I've felt for any game character since ... forever. I really got interested in finding out about her background and helping her out.
The new crew is great and in my opinion, even better than the first crew. I hope that whoever wrote Jack gets to come back and write even more for ME3. Insanely well written history and dialogue.
Since we're talking about Jack, I like the more mature tone of this game over ME. At least for me it's more believable and I hope you continue on this path through the third game.

Overall, I'm very happy that I bought this game and I will be playing this over and over until it gets old, and then I'll let it rest until I pick it up again and play it some more. Until the third game comes out.

My hopes for the third game is that the planetary exploration is either done automatically (with more landing zones), the fuel stuff goes away (materials may stay, it kind of feels like a strategic thing, even though materials are in abundance). I also hope that you turn more towards the statistics loving RPG player (that's just me, probably) and that you broaden the selection of weapons and armor (I like how it works in ME2, by the way - I just don't like that there's so few options).

Like I said. Overall, I'm happy that I bought this game. I'm just not as happy as I was when I bought the first one.

PS. I'm not saying that ME was a pure RPG, though. I feel that it wasn't. But I think it was more of an Action RPG than just an Action game.

That's what I think.

The problem I find with a lot of opinions here is that a lot of people think that Bioware is only allowed to make RPG's. Didn't Bioware state that they wanted to make Mass Effect a shooter-rpg hybrid? And it's not like the game is bad, it's just different. Some of you are just complaining that it caters to another crowd, and that's just being obtuse. I've played every Bioware game since KOTOR, and have even dabbled in NWN (I didn't play games back when it was new), and I've loved every one of them. I like how Bioware is branching out with ME2.

I don't know... I think Gran hit home with the major issues of the game I saw. I understand that Bioware may want to be broadening their horizons on types of games to make but why do that when they are consistently making RPG's that are in the running for game of the year. They made their franchise and fan base off of making RPG's... No offense to Bioware or anything but sticking to what works isn't a bad thing.

My main concerns with this game are as followed:

-The game had very limited customization options when it came to the type of weapons and armor you got.

- Too many characters also. Don't get me wrong I loved every character in this game whereas in the first I couldn't stand Kaiden or Liara but 12 characters including Shepard himself. Bioware could have done so much more to develop this games weak story by taking a few characters out and using them for ME3.

-Scanning/Probing i know has been mentioned. I'm really just mentioning this just so Bioware will rid ME3 of this. It was soooooooooo boring. I would take the MAKO and planetary exploration anyday over this interface.

- Also... The missions and assignments literally take about 5 minutes to do. I remember when I first went through Noveria it took me at least 3 hours in ME1. I guess I was just really disappointed with how fast pace this game really is.

- Storyline is one of the weakest I have played. I don't want to spoil anything so I will just leave it at that. Anyone that has completed the game would probably agree.

- I wish, like Gran said, Bioware would go back to the statistic based ME game than the shooter aspect. I personally think it balanced the game out perfectly between and RPG and a Third Person Shooter.

Now there are definitely elements of this game that I like more than the First:

- I loved the interrupt dialogue options. By far probably the best thing Bioware brought to the table when it come to ME2. It made me feel like I had so much more control over my decisions in the game.

- Heavy weapons were again amazing. Anyone that pre-ordered the game and got the Singularity, Awesome touch to the game Bioware. I loved it.

- I loved being able to fly inside the system also. That was really the only time I felt like I was playing the RPG part of the game. I even enjoyed using money on fuel. I like the addition because it made it more realistic.

- This goes back to the dialogue but I love how the game was more mature than the last. I liked the cursing, I like the pryo guys exploding into little pieces. I like that aspect of the game more.

Overall I was a little disapointed in the game. Its a great game don't get me wrong but I don't think it compares to ME1. Its my opinion that I believe that ME2 just wasn't a better expierence on the whole scale that ME1 was. ME1 with all the bugs and glitches I enjoyed more then the fast paced ME2 game. I think personally the games biggest flaw was the lack of story progression. But I'm not bashing on anyone that thinks its better than the first. You guys are more than welcome to your opinion. I would have just liked to see Bioware bring back more elements that they had in the first game that made it great rather than give me a feeling like I was playing Gears of War in space. Those are my thoughts.

dunno if it was posted. But polish magazine CD-Action rated ME2 10 out of 10 :)

+ Genius Gameplay, Great characters and dialogs, Grat virtual actors(Sheen, etc.) Combat system, story, the way it looks :P

-didn't find, but tried ;P Less complex than MMO
