Does anyone actually take reviews from the "official" platform magazines seriously? It's not like OXM, Nintendo Power or whatever the Playstation one is are going to pan a game that's supposed to be a major seller on their console.

I definitely don't.

I'll be interested in seeing the IGN review. I know IGN loved Mass Effect 1, so they probably have pretty high expectations for the sequel.

this.

I look forward to the gamespot review.
Gamespot's firing of Gerstmann was inexcusable but I think they've gotten their act together since then.

Giving Demon's Souls their Game of The Year award was an incredibly gutsy move that no doubt pissed a lot of Uncharted 2 fanboys off.
Also the fact that they didn't even nominate Modern Warfare 2 for their Game Of The Year award no doubt required a lot of courage.

I think gamespot has redeemed themselves.

Demon souls was hardly GOTY worthy. IGN is pretty much the only site I trust. I seem to agree with them more often than any other review.

Giving a GOTY award for a game no one expected, and not nominating a popular AAA title doesn't mean you have suddenly became good at journalism.  Might they have learned and are willing to take chances?  Yes.  Could they also just be doing this hoping they seem radical and people will flock back to read again? Of course.

Metacritic is usually a good way to look at the overall feeling towards a game and brief summary of reviews. Ofcourse if you have a game like GTA4 which is over praised to hell and back then it doesn't help much.

Personally I read what criteria the magazine/website uses to judge a 10/10, as well as it's history granting the award. For example GamesTM states that perfection is impossible and thus adjusts its highest rating to account for this. I take a rating that high from them quite seriously, even if it often is down to personal preference between 9/10 and 10/10 for the best games.

I only listen to one review and that's my own.

If I can't have a fem shep run around in underwear and have fem/fem relationships with every fem in my crew then no way does this game get a 10/10 out of me. 4/10 tops. TOPS.

well, i don't know if there are any reviews up on webites yet. seems like most are from upcoming magazines, and all we have for those is scans (which I don't think we're allowed to post here). Good idea though, we can at least consolidate all the scores that have been given so far

EDIT:  Here's some links, not the full reviews, but better than nothing

OXM - 9.5

PC Gamer (UK) - 90%

I just got a copy of OXM the other day and the full review is 4 pages not just the one shown in the scans, it is actually quite a thorough review for coming out so early, I do wish that they had focused on more specific areas such as exploration and squad customization but hey what they do have is pretty good.

I don't care for reviews for games that I know deep down will be incredible. These games are by Bioware.

To me, IGN's scores always seem inflated vis-a-vis other game reviewers.

IGN goes by hype. Lol. Though they can be trustful on "regular" un-hyped games, but games like MW2 ...etc...are all hyped reviews.

I have added a total average score underneath, and so far it is 96%, so hell yeah it looks like epic.

I prefer IGN AU better, they gave Halo 3 an 8.9 review vs IGN's 9.5, reason, it just wasn't good enough for a 9+ review. they claimed.

I don't look at scores as a way to quantify what a game does right but rather as a method of categorization.

Eg: Games at 10/10, 5/5 100/100 are top tier games with extreme amounts of polish and are accessible not only to hardcore fans of the genre but are games that serve as great introductions to the genre.

Games at 6-7/10, 3/5 etc are games that while not bad games in their own right they lack polish in many areas and lack accessibility. Hardcore fans of the genre will still like these games but they won't draw in players who are new to the genre and they don't really go out of their way to make everything very accessible.

All reviews are dumb due to the numbered score system. Look at GTAIV lol.

Best thing to do is read up on the game, watch videos, and read as many reviews as possible. The score doesn't matter. It's just a number.

True, I mean I played GTA IV, and liked it a lot, but in the end despite the like I still never beat it, I got maybe 75% done and got bored with it, they just couldn't keep me till the end.  That's not to say everyone is like that, but it was for me.

Then a game like Metal Gear Solid 4 I played like 5-6 times through, but again I know others who couldn't get past the opening mission, so it's all realtive.

Just watch videos, read as many reviews as you can, and if all else fails and you still don't feel sold on the game, rent the game.

100% generally doesn't mean "perfect," it means it is especially great.

True, but the very fact that someone's using it to mean "especially great" instead of perfect means their review should be discounted. :P

I'd say 10/10 is more like "Imperfect human beings cannot do any better than this. No mere mortal could have improved this game." Or possibly, "I am riding high on the joy of playing this game and it's so good that any flaws it has, it makes me forget."

I'm on the waiting for IGN train.

Again why I like IGN's score name better, 100% isn't perfect on there site, it is merely masterful.

IMO the change made by gamespot to the valutation of games is a lot better.
First: because the vote given by other magazine in decimals is not that objective but it's purely subjective. It's hard to evaluate if a 9.1 game is better or worse than a 9.3 game.
While with gamespot u understand that a 9.5 game is a game u can't miss a 9.0 game isin any case an excellent game and so on....even if the fact that it is always the opinion of a reviewer should be taken always in consideration.
Second: the visual synthesis of pros and cons of every game make it certainly clearer than other magazines.

Is certainly less clear, how money, earned from publishers, influences their reviews ;)
