I am wondering if DA3 protaganist is gonna be refered to by his\\her last name like Hawke or Shepard, or gonna be refered to by their title like Warden or Warden-Commander or Dragonborn in Skyrim.

I little bit of both, I'm sure. I hope a companion or two gives us a nickname to mix it up, though. Varric was so stingy with Hawke in reference to the nicknames.

Needs both I think. People you don't know, Inquistors, and those who aren't friends with you should use your title.

They'll use both, much like how in ME they would alternate between 'Shepard' and 'Commander' (and of course 'Commander Shepard'), and how in DA2 they did 'Hawke' and 'Champion'

its annoying enough that everyone on here calls him/her inquisitor, I wouldn't want that in the game. if they're gonna call me by a title it should be a real one like champion was, and not a job title.

But some jobs necessitate the use of rank/title in place of a name.  I'm referring to military and para-military organizations, specifically, which the Inquisition seems to mimic from what I understand.

I work for a police department and every morning it's "Good morning, Chief!", not "Good morning, (insert last name here)".

If they're going to go the route of having a name I'd much rather they give a fixed androgynous first name and let us choose the surname than the other way around.

I think that we'll get a mixture of surname/title though, like in DA2.

The whole thing about everyone calling your character "Hawke" and "Shepard" and "Warden" and "Dragonborn" came about because somewhere along the way somebody insisted that role-playing games should be as extensively voice-acted as possible. Since it's impossible to account for every name the player might use for their characters in bitstream sound files, this was the compromise: you can name your character whatever you want, we'll just call you this.

As far as I'm concerned, it's just a fair and acceptable compromise for now. However, what I'm really waiting for is a realistic a voice synthesizer technology for games to be available.

well yes, but they don't say "good morning police" do they? in dao they say warden which gets annoying, then in awakening they say commander which makes a lot more sense.

They calle you Warden because that's your rank in the organizazion. You were called Commander in DAA because that's your rank in the organization in DAA.
If you meet a simple soldier, wouldn't you call him soldier?

@MR_PN - they certainly do say "Good morning, officer". Now if *I* was speaking to a co-worker I wouldn't refer to them as officer as they would be my peer and/or friend, but the higher-ups are always referred to by rank (Sergeant, Major, etc).
So Helpless Plebian #45 in DA:I asking for help would certainly use title as a form of address, I'd imagine.

Some jobs make no sense at all, I agree, but I see the reasoning with Warden/Champion/Inquisitor. It's a position of governmental or judicial authority.

They could go the Codemasters route (developer of Dirt racing games, Grid, etc) and let you pick a name or even nickname from a list of names that have been recorded. This is more wishful thinking on my part since this would be a massive undertaking to record all names from all possible voices for their use in the game. Maybe next-gen they will get some new software/tech that can render any word in a given voice without a mountain of legwork.

Wouldn't that put voice actors out of business?

That's the problem there. I'd rather they focus on something else. But maybe, like you said, some technology comes out of no where which can fix this problem.

I would have written a better reply if the turtles head wasn't popping out, so brb need to crap

I would rather pick from a list of three names then just create a surname, that way people can say the pc's first name

It would be sensible to alternate between the character's title and his/her surname. The only way I think they'd ever use the character's first name is if there's one fixed name for each gender.

Hopefully just the title will be predermined and used, like DAO. And very infrequently. Skip actual names entirely.

Its really poor writing if they say your name every sentence like they did with Hawke. How often in real life do you ever say the name of the person you're talking directly face to face to? And pet names work just fine as a substitute in romantic situations.

Perhaps at the beginning of the game you'll be able to chose your bro rank, and all companions will and characters will call you that. Like Brostradamus. Scarlett Brohansson.

Speaking of surnames: in ME3 I always found it annoying that Commander Shepard calls the Virmire survivors "Kaiden" and "Ash." Seemed really unprofessional. It's kind of understandable (but still unprofessional,) if they're your space-boyfriend/girlfriend, but I'm pretty sure it happens regardless.

All I'm saying is I want some more professionalism in my fictitious sci-fi and fantasy militaries.
