I guess she was a little ugly, but there seems loads of hate at her on the forums.

Uncanny valley. I don't really hate her, but like Jacob, I prefer it when she's not around.

I guess "hate" is a strong word, but for me:
- Voice acting was mediocre
- Conflict of interest (actress works for IGN)
- Time creating her would have been better spent creating a model for an unmasked Quarian

I can't speak for everyone, but the reasons I don't care for her are mediocre VA, poor use of motion capture makes the character fall into the "uncanny-valley" and out of place, and she is just unnecessary, and her role could have been filled by an already established character (RIP Emily Wong).  Also a very very awkward "romance".  If you can call it that.  It's like she was fanservice gone horribly wrong.

She was easy target.

- blamed for conspiracy of IGN's good reviews of ME3
- blamed for spending money on her face instead Tali
- blamed for death of Emily Wong (minor quest-giving NPC before ME3) on Twitter
- average voice acting

And other thing...

EDIT: And everything was mentioned in thread before I finished my post....

Which is so ridiculous. IGN gives every triple-A game great reviews. Big publisher? 9/10! Small publisher? 6/10.

I agree, but first weeks after releasing ME3 was any munition against BW good.

I personally think that they just want journalist VA for role of journalist, same as Command and Conquer used real local reporters in their in-game videos. And because younger fans would be hardly appeased by someone from CNN, they chose known game journalist.

I honestly don't think people particularly hate Diana Allers. She's a fairly wooden character that is poorly acted. That's not all that unusual, even for a Bioware game.

It's all the real life stuff and really fuzzy conflict of interests surrounding her voice actor that is being criticized.

That's why they hate her. A professional voice actor could have filled that spot and done a much better job.

Her VO is mediocre and the way she's dressed is unprofessional. And we already had two journalists that could have filled the spot she took.

There was just no reason for a character like that to be in the game in the first place. Her character model is...weird...like they wanted to make it attractive, but they imported the attractive woman they based it on badly, so it failed. Her outfit is disturbing. (Look at how people respond to Miranda, who is relatively well-liked; spandex is just a hard look to pull off, moreso when the character it's on looks like she's having a midlife crisis.)

Her dialogue is almost completely void of characterization. Her best bit is the argument with a crewman over opsec. Overall, thoough, no personality comes through.

And all of this, with a character apparently put into the game as the result of a promotion deal with a media company. I really can't see a reason to LIKE her.

At least with one of the two reporters that already existed in Mass Effect, there's an opportunity to develop their characters.

I had no idea who Chobot was before ME3, and I thought she kind of looked like Snooki. That was enough for me.

She's a convenient target for misdirected anger. The biggest flaw of Allers as a character is that she is only about half-characterized, there but without the writing strength that supplies a character with the depth that we're used to, which is likely due to the fact that her VA, Jessica Chobot hadn't done VA work before, and she was playing a character who would be interacting heavily with the PC.

Diana Allers is a character with an interesting angle to work on. Jessica Chobot was a fangirl offered a chance to voice a character in one of her favorite games (an offer I doubt many of us would have passed up either). The problem was in combining the two.

She is the perfect metaphor for the perceived (and likely true) corruption of the industry.

The conflict of interest was so scandalous, particularly when IGN led the charge against the "entitled gamers". and giving the game a review of 9.5 (which was ign second highest score that could be awarded at the time). I have no idea what bioware and ign were thinking.

Plenty of publications gave ME 3 high scores, often higher than 9.5s. That doesn't prove anything. Casting Chobot was a bad decision because she has a horrible voice, but they would never be so stupidly obvious if they actually were corrupt. Which they aren't.

The fact that they gave high scores to other games is irrelevant, the problem is that they reviewed a game with a conflict of interest and the said review was a high score.

Thats the problem, It does not matter if they are corrupt or not, the point is they appear to be corrupt

That's a fair point. But that kind of implies that fans are at fault for drawing conclusions that aren't true.

Because Diana Allers was a worthless character who didn't deserve the effort that went into modelling her.
