From only former companions, hoping to get some other characters as first time companions too:
Leliana- chantry agent
Finn- linguist mage
Ariane- elf agent
Leliana is obvious. Ariane and Finn would both have something to do following up after Witchunt, and I see Morrigan (&Warden potentially) as major players, so I went with both. And they all fit well with the Inquisitor's mission statement. If not Ariane, Sigrun, just because she has nothing better to do and I'd like to see more of her.
Companions I want to see make cameos, from most major to most minor, if none were companions for DA3:
Warden, Morrigan, Leliana, Merrill, Ariane, Hawke, Anders/Justice, Velanna, Finn, Hawke sibling, Sigrun (with Nathaniel & Oghren if possible), Zevran, Leliana's crew from Leliana's Song, Isabella, Varric, Sebastian, Alistair, Tallis, Loghaine

I would love to have Varric back! Though I don't usually wish for old companions to be so again... I think Lia - the elf girl you save from that sicko in DA2, who decides she wants to be a fighter like Hawke - would be neat to see where she's at now in her life. And Cullen.

Gosh this is hard. Like I love Sebastian and Nathaniel and am sad I didn't get to romance them, but I feel that their time as companions is over.
So I would have to go with:
1. Lia
2. Cullen
3. Maraas
I would have put Alain in that list but he can die, so. And I didn't want to pick anyone who's already been a companion.

Shayle of house Cadash, as a dwarf warrior. I'd like to see her retain the golem tank 'stoneheart' skill line to solidify her role as a one-handed weapon & shield tank, adding in the highlights of the Guardian Spec from Awakening. Alternatively, she could be focused for a two-handed damage dealing role with the golem DPS skill line to slam, quake, and land killing blows, with elements from the Berserker spec from Origins.
Velanna, as a Dalish Mage. Retaining, and expanding upon her default Keeper spec from Awakening, to fulfill the DPS role, meshing in the Shapeshifter skill line to make for a nature-centric ally. Alternatively, one could focus her as a traditional crowd control Blood Mage, augmented with skills from the Entropy school from Origins.
Sigrun, as a Legionnaire of the Dead. This one I'd have her retain the Legionnaire spec from Awakening, expanding upon it to make a stealthy melee DPS rogue. Alternatively, she should have the option of going the ranged DPS route, similar to Varric, specializing in skills meant to augment crossbow skills to be extremely deadly at range.
Those are my three choices. Notice my desire for dwarf and elf diversity in party options, amidst a potentially human-centric experience in DA3, given past companion rosters. I also specified two main party roles each could be built for. I think it would be more fun to allow companions to be more flexible in our control of building them. That, and have respec tomes available like in Awakening, to allow full control over our gameplay experience.

Ugh, I can't leave it at 3... I'd have 2 more additions to complement my above suggestions, in the form of 2 males:
Oghren, warrior of Orzammar. Obviously specced for melee two-handed weapon DPS. Party role could be streamlined to be more specific, from two options. Melee DPS that can buff allies in battle, or melee DPS that can debuff enemies in battle.
Cammen, Dalish hunter with archery skills as second to none in a DA3 companion roster. In Origins, he was Dalen, a child. I wouldn't mind seeing him back as a proven hunter, following a canon storyline of having Gheyna as his supportive true love. Certainly a minor character in the grand scope of things in Origins, but having his character mature and evolve in such an extraordinary way could be intriguing as a personal storyline. Did Gheyna meet an unfortunate end? Did Cammen use emotion to fuel his inner strength?
Anyway, Cammen or no, a Dalish hunter with the traditional single-target ranged DPS role with a bow. He'd get access to ranged Area-of-effect skills in a specialized Dalish archer skill tree, which also makes bow skills even more deadly. Alternatively, the hunter could instead spec as a Ranger, as from Origins. Summoning a permanent pet from nature to support the party, as the hunter attacks at range on individual targets.

I completly forgot about her yeah that would be awesome. her and fayneriel you see grow (personally) and it would be cool to see them become a great fighter and a companion because of a protaginist saving them in the past.SamaraDraven wrote...

Just three?!
Well....non cannonly I'd pick Sten, Fenris and Morrigan, even though it's not feasible cause Sten is an arishok now, Fenris ran off with Hawke and Morrigan is in the middle of some epic god-rearing quest.
So how about Tallis, Isabella and Wynne.

Ser Gilmore, Mhairi and Leandra Amell. Because its traditional for characters that you saw die or killed personally to be retconned in as companions and/or cameos in sequels *nods*.
More seriously, if they're going to bring back a companion then Sten or Sigrun would both be interesting choices. Or Leliana in her new guise, *provided they do it right*. I could live without any of the DA2 cast coming back, but doubtless we'll end up seeing Varric again.
If they go for a recognisable-but-not-previously-a-companion choice, my vote would go to Ser Wolf of Rivain...
