The mistake was naming it the Wii U. People who bought the Wii think it's an add-on for the console they already bought. People who are tech savvy know that the Wii U is using technology that is only slightly better than what their Xbox/PS3 is capable of delivering.
So, it's really a lose-lose for Nintendo at this point. I hope they turn it around, though. I'd hate to see them (and all their great games) go under.
Agreed, i'm not a huge fan of nintendo's games but i'm definately a fan of zelda and metroid. Would hate to lose those two.
They won't go under. They'll go software only. Their strong suit has always been their games, and their willingness to innovate control schemes. Actual console hardware has always been a problem for them. Ever since the SNES, they've been making console hardware mistake after console hardware mistake.
Honestly, they would've gone software only years ago if the Wii controller gimmick hadn't become a fad.
Mid-2014 we'll see the announcement at the latest. MS and Sony have likely already expressed interest in an exclusive relationship for their software titles. After the holidays, and Nintendo has a clear indicator which one is going to win, they'll commit.
Although, after yesterday, their decision probably became a lot easier...not much ambiguity here in what's going to happen now.
