I've only recently got into the sport (maybe 2 years?) since a lot of my friends in engineering have followed it, some even practicing it.
Now I watch just about every UFC event I can. Some matches can definitely end up as standing up 'still' fights but damn when it gets intense is it ever exciting.
I watch it, enjoy it and do some conditioning ( mainly just weight lifting now since my only concern for fighting is at random bars or parties, and even then it's not really a concern )
Good thread topic, but honestly getting bored with UFC. Can't wait for next Silva bout, and want to see Jones get a good beatdown. Other than that kind of detached right now. Plus I don't feel like spending money no ppv right now.
And OP is right about beautiful fights, but god a lot are disappointing. GSP / Diaz was a snooze.
I knew both Cain and Junior would win these fights. But a rematch between them...not sure who will win.
Picked Cain to win in both their fights, I'll pick him again. Great fight though, and honestly I don't see anyone else in the division that can hang with either Cain or Junior right now. Hunto had a good shot and kept coming forward, but alas it wasn't meant to be.
Slightly off topic, but Enson Inoue posted this on his facebook page.
In September I will be walking from one end of Japan, Sapporo, to the other end, Fukuoka. About 1360 miles. I will be doing this to raise money for a big event for the people of North Japan. I will have pledges of so much per mile. For example if you pledge 0.05¢ per mile that would come out to $68. Or you pledged 0.03¢ per mile that would come out to about $40.
Anyone who wants to seriously pledge send a email of your pledge to destinyforeverorders@gmail.com stating the amount of your pledge. Then when I finish the walk I will send you all emails and payment would work on an honor system. You can follow the journey through my Facebook. https://www.facebook....76?ref=tn_tnmn
Thanks!
Enson Inoue
In case you're wondering if this is legit, it is. Enson has been working very hard since the quake to help the people of northern Japan. So if you're a fan of mma and want to donate a few dollars to a charity, then this is a good one.
Trust me, grapplers in the UFC think they're elite strikers. Hate it when two elite grapplers engage in a sloppy stand up "war".
I'd watch UFC if it was more entertaining than that, but yeah. Thats what it breaks down to, I've noticed.
You're still missing out on some beautiful fights though
Aye. I catch enough highlights. And if there's a great moment that needs to be shown in detail and described, movement for movement, the Gracies handle that in their Gracie Breakdowns of awesome moments.
But damn is the sport sloppy with most fights. I mean, looking past Anderson Silva, Jones, Machida. Emalinenko, maybe St Pierre and that Showtime dude, there's hardly any beauty of speed or technique or spirit involved. It's rough as rough can be. It doesn't touch the abnormal height of concentration, reflex and elegance that a display of boxing or exotic martial arts have, unless it touches upon those instead of BJJ.
I mean, looking at this vid left me in awe after having tried to trace some barely watchable MMA on youtube...:
A gentleman's sport. A really inspiredly insane and watchable gentleman's sport that is.

I really dig how Machida moves, and that thing he did with his hands before springing the kick was cool to see... : )
There's a few reasons for that. First off, the sport is still in its infancy. People are still learning and evolving the techniques. Second, when you mix disciplines there's always a chance for things to get sloppy, but the trade off is things can be more dynamic and unpredictable. To be honest I think the rules should be in flux and open to change. Ground and pound in particular need revision imo. Finally, you get quantity over quality with a typical UFC event because they have 4-5 matches whereas in a boxing you'd be lucky to get 3. The UFC is recruiting like mad and frankly the level of ability varies a lot.

A boxer doesn't have to worry about getting taken down, nor getting kneed and elbowed in the clinch, hence more techinical punches can be thrown since the fighter doesn't need to compensate with awareness of potential takedown threats or even kicks.
Great to watch, but really sad Machida's takedown and clinch stuff isn't on par. Not to mention he's below Jones in every single "stat" (especially haunting's Jones' reach of course).
What really makes it great to watch is the style however. A smart stance with all that evading and countering and reacting to every little move. But yeah, when eventually Machida got closer the outcome was inevitable. At least it's a bit prettier that he doesn't do that knees' n' elbows thing himself. Even tho Jones has a very clean style as well, rough play notwithstanding.
edit (won't triple-post): Why in hells do I hear Machida's style is boring? It's the most tension-filled I've seen in MMA. + I find it amusing the wiki tries to avoid that he's primarily a Karate fighter.
Anderson Silva vs. Chris Weidman folks! How do you guys got? My mind says Anderson will crush him in second or first round tko. But my gut is saying bet on Weidman.
Weidman matches up well with Silva physically and I think he hits harder than Chael. Plus the wrestling pedigree. I give him a chance despite being pretty green. If Edgar barely ekes out another decision I'm going to facepalm.
Interesting he seems so modest - one of the greats, and I think he'd match up great against Jones, even though he himself said he would lose or whatnot.
That said, in the hypothetical match I'd place my bets on Bones Jones.

I wouldn't call Silva modest. There's been threads about Silva on Sherdog (MMA site) from Brazillian posters describing Silva.
