Hmmm, you're the third person to tell me that the leap from Silver to Gold is smaller than one might expect.
I don't know that I'm necessarily "comfortable/proficient" at Silver, though I can pug it with a fair degree of confidence now, even Collectors (though that depends on the map and my frame of mind). In a team of players at around the same level as me, I can make an equal contribution to the game; but in a team with less-experienced players who need more help, I still struggle to keep on top of things at times. I can make a decent attempt at helping to carry such a game (see the "war story" I posted yesterday), but it's hard work and I can't guarantee success.
And I still make newbie mistakes: getting pinned by bosses, forgetting to look behind me for Dragoons and Pyros, rage-gelling in early waves rather than saving it for when it's truly needed. Such mistakes don't happen every game, but they do happen more often than they should. I still need bailing out of trouble from time to time.
(The BSNers who have played alongside me are all rolling their eyes at this point! I'm much more critical of my play than they are. But hey, I'm a perfectionist. I can't help but see the mistakes and room for improvement).
I'll make fewer mistakes and play more confidently as I work at putting the lessons that Silver has taught me into practice. But marksmad and the others are right, there are no new lessons to learn at this level.
And heck, it's only a game! I should remember that and put my hesitation to one side. There's nothing to lose from having a go. As long as the squad is having fun, we're doing it right :-)
Given that I'm not especially talented at playing action games (I got into Mass Effect more for the story and character interactions), I'm amazed I've made it this far. I suppose it's a skill that can be learned like any other.
Due to timezone differences, you and I might never be on at the same time. But hey, if our paths do happen to cross and you don't mind carrying a Gold neophyte...
Well, I can tell you a story: once open a time, when I first made my jump into Gold, the host uncereminously upped the difficulty to Platinum. I was *THIS* close to exiting the lobby but then, **** IT, YOLOOOOOOO, hahaha. I used one of my most preferred kits, Asari Huntress, and jumped headfirst into my 1st platinum ever. I told this story once on this board in this thread, I think, though I forgot on which page since it's been a long while.
The result? Thanks to me crazily shooting Dark Channel at every Phantom I can see, hahaha, I got first place. It was a pretty smooth experience, actually (of course not all platinum matches I had afterwards can be called smooth, lol).
What I meant to say is, just YOLO and make the jump already! Sink or swim, it doesn't matter. It can be really fun to test your limit sometimes; and really, once you get the hang of it, Gold is not that bad--it surely is my most preferred difficulty; Platinum can be very stressful sometimes, hahaha.
And hey, if I can play with Mordokai and Quarian Master Race, I am sure we can make the time to play together some day
Anyways,
Last night I played with a bunch of very very beginner guys in gold that didn't have equipment at all: I mean N7/CP in the 100 range here. Now, usually I just bolted out but I suddenly realized that the two of them that were there when I joined the lobby were actually Japanese! I never played with folks from Japan before and they used mic too so it's interesting to hear all their conversations, so I stayed, hahaha. They immediately privated the lobby once I joined and invited another friend of theirs (also 100-ish N7/CP) who also used a mic.
We got White/Geth/Gold.
In the end it was an amusing and entertaining experience. We got full extraction and my score tripled all their score combined, hahaha, but hearing they're saying numerous "Oh ****" in Japanese was really fun, and they're seem to be having fun too with laughs and stuff like that, so it's fun.
