Solo
Been a while since I've been playing regular, but I felt like a few games so I load up and luckily I land in a decent lobby. We play a couple of games and then ready up for a third, but when I spawn in I'm on my own on Glacier, Gold against Collectors.
No one else had turned up and I got devices on wave 10, but couldn't get the third done so wiped out.
Ah well it was still good fun and I need the practice as I'm a bit rusty.

Yeah it was fun being the hero for a couple games but I'm not good enough to do it all the time and I just got exhausted. Hopefully they get better though, I gave them some useful in game tips like 'stop dying' and 'get over here idiot'.
I was recently trying to get into cover from Scion fire while the other 3 in my squad helpfully blocked me from getting behind the wall. I muttered to myself very loudly "Why won't you let me past, you f*cking morons?!!" At this they magically parted and I made it into cover alive. As my shield restored, I realized that I had my mic on the whole time ![]()

Maybe a thicker skin is required. As I don't ever remember too many strings of bad luck lobbies happening is pug lottery. And if you're not that confident in a lobby, bring some nades for backup (but not for spamming unless required like in objective waves or for pug revive pile rescue). Simple.
I'm also wondering if a certain amount of skill is required for pug lottery? Maybe I'm really, really such a super fantastic awesome-o top notch player capable of insuring all pugs see at least wave 10 pay day for the most part?... Unless some magical pow-wow puts me out of commission like it did yesterday.
Why I say this? Well, too many are used to playing within a certain comfort zone. I call this comfort zone because I seen some friends with mics in a pug match totally wreaking Gold & they were all like "Oh, this game isn't even a challenge anymore. Can do this is my sleep, bow-wow." Epeen chit chat. But when they listened to me and picked weaker setups, they totally were dropping like flies and I had to carry them to victory like pug lottery dealt me a super lousy hand again. >_< (ie. remember. I hate clutching more then 1 wave). They were all freaking Volus Vanguards with Cheese Boost, Cheese Agro Dump, and Cheese Biotic Charge Shield restore. How much more help they needed? But that is the reality of most it seems. Maybe L2P first is the issue? Then maybe the true art of learning to pug kicks in.
And no, I'm not saying all should get into the pug lottery way of life gaming instantly. Just that it's always there when things start to get too easy and predictably boring. And that's it's also there to make you a better player faster should you choose to jump in sooner (how it happened to me). Guess I'm always forgetting not all BSNers are pro enough... or that too many care only about epeen score & payday (as these two things don't fit in with the practices of pug love).

Maybe I've just had bad luck, but it seems rare to have 4 prepared players in a gold match. Starting to just be happy when there are 3. And when there's 2, often the game "randomly" picks collectors.
You're their preparation backup plan. And having at least one more competent enough player should always ensure victory. Otherwise you're not fully yet ready for the full extent of pug lottery. You can go back to choosing you lobbies until you're more ready or craving something new (so please don't take this as offense. I don't mean any).
And Collectors are the best and fairest faction... but in pug land, they are the ultimate test. So slap on a fresh pair of panties. Them pugs are hungry for payday, and they will shed tears if you don't get them there.

Sabotage.
Eh?
It's very selective.
Half the time I use it on, say, an Atlas, or Geth, the recipient just stands there looking at the scenery instead of killing things ![]()

I find the same. When I use it on geth, I'm mainly doing it to hold them in place while I plug them with sniper rounds. Turrets are about the only thing I actively use it defensively on.

This.
I tend to use Sabotage whenever a Geth gets too close to me, or if I desperately need to shoot it and it's moving too much. Basically, it's my personal stun lock.... The only things worth Sabotaging to actually kill something are the Cerberus Turrets and ocasionally Geth Pyros. Other than that, I use it in a defensive manner.

No. Atlases will happily kill anything nearby as long as they are looking at it. Rocket Troppers will take out Pyros for you, Primes will destroy their own Turrets. My fave achievements, which I've posted before, are
marksmad [Turret] Turret
and
marksmad [Atlas] Atlas

EDIT: So when two Atlases walk out of the spawn in single file, try to Sabotage the one behind, at which point it will generally shoot its ally in the back.

The trick with the Atlas is to get it to melee, then sabotage it. Then watch the killing spree begin. Or the very start of the round, when enemy units cluster around the Atlas.
Last three pugs: urgh.
Silver is not meant to be this much work. I've basically duoed the last three games, because I was all "lolsilver lets give a level 6 human engineer a Phalanx and Explosive Ammo I" and then dropped into games where everyone was dead on wave 1. In the Collectors Reactor map, myself and a human soldier (also levelling up) basically duoed every round from 5 onwards...and then I had the misfortunte to drop into that leecher's pug for my next game ![]()

I find that Silver can still be a challenge depending on how the dice fall. I rolled Hydra/Collectors/Silver earlier today. Wave 10 devices when two pugs have dropped, Scion cannons and laz0rs all over the place... yeah, the remaining pug (a very competently-played QME) and I (QFE) had to work for our credits.

I forgot about Primes taking out their own turrets though that's quite common. When it comes to Atlases, I'm not that lucky :/ They never kill anything for me. I usually just keep them away from my team for a few seconds so they can get past it or something.

Oh yeah, Silver is no joke when you're low level and using sub-optimal equipment and weapons.
I've burned through more ops packs and missiles in those last three games than in my last 10 gold games.

I've not seen it many times, but when an Atlas kills a Phantom its just awesome. Snatch her up and crunch her. Its very rare for me to cheer at an Atlas.

Collectors
We wiped on wave 10 London hack objective. The sheer limits to which collectors push you and the way in which they outsmart our 'clever use of game mechanics' like RHA, wall hax - just amazing.
An enemy worth it's salt. I played sub-20 min games against reapers and geth before this but this was way more fun despite the wipe. Atleast it made me think a lot more.

I estimate that extended "so" at the equivalent of something between 30 and 40 millib00g13s.

I'm coming round to the belief that Silver is the worst to play of all difficulties, because it's frankly not a lot easier than Gold, maybe 3/4 as hard, for less than half the payout. I can't see that Silver goes significantly faster or easier than Gold so why bother?

As Ash says, it's a matter of timing, but also of positioning. If it can't easily see something to kill it just stands there. But when there's a Guardian next to it... ![]()

Interestingly, I always found the disparity between gold and silver to be very distinct. Silver seems way easier for me so the payout seems OK. Gold is tough and can go sideways without you realizing it where as Silver seems like a Sunday drive most of the time.

I disagree, personally. In general, I find it considerably easier than Gold. The pressure gets to me in the later waves of Gold in a way that it just doesn't with Silver. My first experiences with Silver, when I joined these boards, were like that too, but I managed to move past it after a week or so under the tutelage of people here. Gold isn't clicking in the same way, in some games I'm still feeling as out of my depth as I did in my very first Gold.
It's impossible to predict, though. Some days, I play an absolute blinder. I can't rely on it though. My Silver-level play is much more consistent.

Don't lose your confidence, just analyze your gameplay and try to improve it, you'll get to being able to solo gold in no time, and you'll look back and wonder how on earth you could be that scrubby back then
