I disagree, personally. In general, I find it considerably easier than Gold. The pressure gets to me in the later waves of Gold in a way that it just doesn't with Silver. My first experiences with Silver, when I joined these boards, were like that too, but I managed to move past it after a week or so under the tutelage of people here. Gold isn't clicking in the same way, in some games I'm still feeling as out of my depth as I did in my very first Gold.
It's impossible to predict, though. Some days, I play an absolute blinder. I can't rely on it though. My Silver-level play is much more consistent.
QFT. Your comfort level will change with experience - you really do have to put the time in to instinctively know the wave compositions and enemy damage thresholds, as well as your own shieldgate capabilities. Talking of shieldgate, and having played with you, I would be surprised if you didn't enjoy (and learn quite a bit about Gold) playing a BatSent specced like this -

I use whatever ammo suits the team best - even explosive rounds sometimes - and I used to skip Shockwave completely but it is handy situationally. The Harrier is fantastic on him as an alternative, but the Kishock fits so well it feels wrong to overlook it, and I know you like to snipe. You might feel more confident hosting initially, but it's not as essential as everyone makes out. He's almost indestructible with that shield recharge speed, lacking only a dodge, but if you can't dodge, PUNCH! And remember there's no hipfire penalty on the Kishock, so the big guys are very easy to hit while walking backwards without losing your bearings. JIM!!!!
I still occasionally play off-host Vanguards in Silver pugs, and I sometimes even load up on level 1 consumables if others have them too. I never promote, so I will usually use lower tier weapons on my level 20 characters, just to keep things interesting. And they do get interesting. There are certain combinations on objective waves which can be almost impossible regardless of the official difficulty level - Jade / Collectors / Devices springs to mind, without a Jugg or an Infiltrator - both of which you're more likely to have with you on Gold. That Giant Reapers game we wiped as a duo was pretty damn tough because we got totally trolled by the first device placement - the first one is usually a gimme. At the risk of sounding like a hippy stoner, the game is the game, and the difficulty setting is a state of mind. There was a time when I couldn't solo gold without a very large hammer and an Adas. An Adas. On a Krogan. I'll just let that sink in. I am no longer that player. How do you get to Carnegie Hall? Practice.

My Batguard got sync killed 5 times last night in one game (London/Gold PUG) by Banshees coming through walls. They seemed to focus on my Batguard; nobody else got sync-killed. I was running and charging as fast as I could to kite away from the Banshees, but they were all following me around the map.
Batguard = Banshee bait
Were there Infiltrators on your team? The amount of aggro you take in a game where the other 3 are cloaking all the time can be really intense. Far worse than a solo at times. I still get shivers remembering an escort in an identical-sounding game. How many Infiltrators don't know that the drone doesn't register their presence when they cloak? I had to do an emergency charge, and one of them complained that I had left the escort, even though I was the only one doing the feckin escort most of the time.
