By the sounds of it, the one old companion that will be returning will not be dog. For human nobles it would make absolutely no sense to lose their faithful companion that's been with them since when you were still living safely home at Highever. I hope the devs working on the expansion have thought of this: storywise it would make absolutely no sense for you to be without dog all of a sudden. Is their any chance we will be able to keep him? I wouldn't even mind it much if there weren't any interaction between dog and other partymembers, just allow him to be in my group!
