So yeah, pretty much as we called it at the beginning of the thread. Some tech specs, lots of hype as an entertainment system, some new entries in the hyper-popular franchises.

E3 is three weeks away, guys, and will have a far larger audience than this. What do you think is the best time to reveal all your new exclusives, E3 or an oddly-timed press conference with limited audience?

Chill the **** out and pump the breaks on the "Sony will destroy Microsoft" predictions. They will bite you in ass, as early calls in the console wars always do (who saw the Wii demolishing the other two consoles in sales and making a profit while doing it coming?).

I think we can all breath a sigh of relief over it not being called "Durango".

I must have been the only one who liked the Durango name. But I'm not far north of the border, so, yeah. I think it sounds pretty neat.

Better than "Xbox One", honestly, which is pretty meh. But it's just a name, that's not what's important.

I am shocked that they are blocking used games though, isn't Gamestop big in the USA?

It's their attempt of trying to kill the used gaming market, they don't profit by letting it exist and thus try to end it or tip it in their favor.

I wouldn't have a problem with that if consoles actually dropped digital game prices once in a while or actually had decent sales for once.

So blocking used games, and their always online scheme is very reminiscent of SimCity's (ie no we're not arbitrarily locking you out with DRM, the experience just wouldn't be the same without our Azure Cloud). Because that went over so well, lol.

The Xbox One isn't always online.

No, just its games if they use said service. It could be just a softer way of reaching the same end.

I don't think Xbox One will be a bad machine but I'm still probably getting a PS4. It's still good to know that multiplatform developers won't be held back by the lowest common denominator considering the fact that the PS4/X1 hardware appear to be similar.

They're going to have to find some way to compete with Steam.

So, to sum up Xbox One:

- No backwards compatibility of any kind.
- Blocks used games unless you pay a fee.
- No internet connection required. (This is good)
- Focused more on being a cable box.
- System specs not shown. (PS4 is likely more powerful)
- Three operating systems running at the same time. (Why?)

This thing sounds like everything I hoped it wouldn't be. The presentation was incredibly boring and almost nothing new was shown. They just made my decision to buy a PS4 incredibly easy. Thanks, I guess.

Is Microsoft even trying?

I think people aren't even trying to understand why things went the way they did, both for the PS4 reveal and X1 reveal.

Sony's side- Their reveal was a good 3 and a half months ahead of when people really pay attention to game and console releases(E3). They had no choice but to show a few games running on their console. They also revealed the controller to keep people talking, but did not show the console itself. Why? Because saving it for E3 will pay off- it will be a huge talking point, possibly the biggest. The games they show will also get people talking, possibly to less of an extent than Microsofts because they already showed some early, but again, they had to. Sony's build up to E3 is sort of a slow rise strategy, and it'll work.

Microsoft's side- Their reveal today didn't show as much on the game-side, but more on the console side. We saw the console, we saw the controller, we saw some Kinect, and a tiny amount of games. Why? Because E3 is just a mere 19 days away- showing a ton of games now dilutes the effect that they'll have in the minds of viewers. Best to save them for E3. So instead, showing off what other things the console can do is quite smart- by getting that out of the way now, games can take center stage a little less than three weeks from now. They'll need to wow the crowd with new IPs and exclusive established franchises, so we'll see if it works. Less certain than Sony's, but Microsoft can have a strong showing, we'll just have to see.

So comparing gifs and pics of what was shown at their respective reveals doesn't really tell us anything. E3 is where it'll matter. Sony's got a console reveal to show as well as its games, Microsoft already handled its console reveal so it needs to match(or try to match) with its new exclusives, which its needed for a looong time now, as Sony's an exclusives machine.

Too many people are so ready to hate things that they can't be open to success or see things on a level playing field. That makes me sad.

This needs to be posted here:

"The first and most obvious of these pitfalls is if Sony or Microsoft forgets who brought them to the dance in the first place. Gamers. I certainly see the temptation to emphasize all sorts of experiences that these boxes might bring to the living room. These new machines can do a lot. The risk is that either or both of the new platforms emphasize these “value-add” experiences too much, both in the user interface on the consoles themselves, or in the story they tell consumers when they unleash their avalanche of advertising. To paraphrase a political slogan, it’s about the games, stupid. "

Blocking was a bit of a misspeak, it's more like online passes and such, where you don't get some of the content in a used game unless you pay a fee. Except here it sounds like you don't get any content without paying the fee. So even more regressive.

Not even the games are online since I get the impression that the disc and console communicate a unique ID offline, and not export the info to some online server.

There was a rumor that the Xbox One would reserve 3 GB of RAM for its OS. Hope that isn't true.

Exactly. But we'll just sit back and watch. Let things transpire as they do and observe.

Sounds like you wanted to buy a ps4 in the first place and felt the need to validate your opinion on the BSN. Don't worry soon you'll have a share button for that on your ps4! And if the games too hard you can just let your online friends play it for you!

Guess this is why EA cancelled it's Online Pass method.

E3 is no excuse to announce features which directly hurt gamers. They could've announced games and I'm ninety-percent sure we'd still be thinking the console isn't that great due to it's limiting nature. I'm claiming Sony is superior than Microsoft here and I'll hold to it because their features don't seem to hinder gamers.

It's bad that "Facebook: The Console" is more interesting than "TV: The Console".

There is no misunderstanding. It DOES block used games UNLESS you pay a fee.

Well, I've always bought both Consoles (stopped with nintendo after selling my Wii) but idk:

Mandatory kinect, used game fee, half the presentation spent talking about how it works as a super tivo and then a CoD game that looks like it's running on a 360 or PS3...no thank you.

Posted this in another thread, but relevant here as well.

This is interesting:

http://www.oxm.co.uk...re-owned-block/

"On the new Xbox, all game discs are installed to the HDD to play," a Microsoft representative told Wired today. This has been styled a "pre-owned block", but OXM's Jon Hicks (who's currently in Redmond, checking out the new console) argues otherwise - when you sell the game on Microsoft will deactivate your install, meaning the next purchaser won't have to pay the second-user fee. You won't, however, be able to share a single copy of a game with your friends.

From that, apparently you can deactivate games if you want to sell em', and the next person who owns the game (whether or not you charged them) doesn't have to pay a fee.

Hmm, that'll confuse those who lend their games out to their friends, like some of my XBL buddies do over in Albion.

A misspeak on my part, I mean. I would say it's at least not the same thing as blocking the ability to play used games outright, fee or no.

A video game console with features to share video games...

That's just horrible, I'd rather share the last episode of Jersey Shore.

There are several factors involved in the situation, but the features presented will definitely be appealing to a broad group of consumers with expendable income---many of them not gamers, yet. That's how the PS3 roped in many new customers: with its Blu-ray drive.

So I can't bring a game over to a friends house to play with them there?

Well that's ungodly stupid.
