I picture him as a boy who worshipped his older brother, so when he was given a freaking *mabari hound* of course he'd name him for the most awesome, strongest and toughest person in his life.

Plus, it amuses me to think of the reactions that the NPCs would have had when he told them its name. And the hijinks if visiting nobles thought that the teyrn's heir had gotten into the larder again.
